Note: E.C. is listed on the 1860 Coles Co. IL Census Record in Seven
Hickory Township, living in the household with Henry Eversole,
next door to his parents, William and Sarah Wells. Also living
in the Eversole household is E.C.'s brother Jeff Wells.
Note: E.C. served in the Union Army in the Civil War as a Sargeant in
Co. G of the 54th Regiment, IL Infantry. He enlisted 2 Dec
1861, and was mustered into service in Jonesboro, Coles Co. IL
on 18 Feb 1862. More Coles County soldiers were enrolled in the
ranks of the 54th Illinois Infantry Regiment than in any other
regiment. This regiment was under the command of Colonel
Greenville M. Mitchell of Charleston. The 54th was organized at
Camp DuBois, Anna, Illinois in November, a861, as part of the
"Kentucky Brigade". It was on the extreme left of General
Sherman's army at the Big Black River. The 54th was mustered
out on 15 Oct 1865. Reference for this information is "Coles
County in the Civil War 1861-1865," pp 32-33.
Note: E.C. lived in Cherokee Co. KS according to historical records
for that county: "Shawnee, Cherokee Co. KS - The following
settlers came to Shawnee township as early as 1866: H. G. Clem,
Matthew Raulston, J. R. Burrows, A. Lynch, E.C. Wells, ..."
Note: He was elected to the Kansas State Senate in 1874. About this
same time he must have returned to Illinois for his marriage
which accurred that same year.
