Marble St Vit Cathedral, Prague
Tomb of Ottokar II
|
Heinrich PARLER, the first important member of the family probably came from Cologne. He designed the important late Gothic Holy Cross Church at
Schwablisch-Gmund and possibly the chancel at Ulm Cathedral (1377). His son Peter PARLER, the most important member of the family, was responsible for the major part of the Cathedral of St.Vitus
(1353-85) in Prague, as well as much of its sculpture, and may have designed St.Bartholomew at Kolin and St.Barbara at Kutna Hora.Of the other PARLER's Johannes worked at Freiburg in Breisgau from
1354, possibly on the Cathedral, and Heinrich of Gmund was called in to advise on the Milan Cathedral (1391-92). The PARLER family, which had its roots in Schwabish-Gmund in Swabia,is typical of
several closely related clans of masons whose dynamic building and consulting activities and far flung networks of connections and communication influenced whole areas of Gothic architecture. Family-operated
lodges were no rarity Throughout the 14th century the PARLER(Parlerius Parlercz, von Gumnd)family formed a tightly knit group of innovative masons working under the culturally very active Luxenburg
dynasty. Their influence in architecture, sculpture, and the minor arts ranged from Basel to Prague and was felt to such an extent that the PARLER family became legendary. In 1486, Matthaus RORICZER,
Hanns SCHMUTTERMEYER, and others mention the "Junker von Prag" as their ultimate authority. As late as 1565, the PARLER brothers were shown as three riders on a medal whose face shows the famous
north tower of the Minster in Strasbourg where Michael of Gmund had worked for a few years after 1383. In Cologne the word PARLER is known to be another written form for Steinmetzen (translated
stonemason). D.Graham COPELAND's "Many Years After" states this family came from Scotch-Irish- English emigrants from Londonderry, Ireland to Virginia, later Shadrach and William, moving to
Orangeburg, S.C. Symon PARLER was transferred from London to Barbados May 2, 1635, aged 24, on the "Alexander". (Reg14-352).His children are supposed to be those found in Mass.(spelled PARLOW, PARSLOW,
and PARLER) The Boston Evening Transcript. There is also a Symon and James PARLER/PARLOR found in the 1850 Calif. Census. "Great Gothic Sculptures" by Jean Rene GABORET, speak of the German PARLER
family of masons and stone sculptors active in southern Germany and Bohemia during the 14th Century.

Notes for William Daniel PARLER From an account by Laura PARLER-HUNGERPILLER (S.C.L. p.975.779 pp 22, 49). William Daniel PARLER went
to Arkansas in the 1850's with a group of men and obtained land. When they were settled, they wrote for their wives to come. Amarintha (Mary), with her children, Laura 2 and Alex 6wks., started
out to join her husband. In the meantime, Daniel, who was not happy in Arkansas decided to return to S.C., hoping to reach there before his wife set out. When the boat on which he was going up river
passed a larger boat going down the river, he noticed a small black trunk on the baggage piled at the front of the boat. He remarked to a fellow passenger "That looks like my little old black trunk
I left in S.C." When he reached the home of his f-i-l, Jacob SNIDER, he found that his wife and children had gone to Arkansas. He broke down and cried. The next day he set out to retrace the long
journey and find his family. Back in Arkansas kindly settlers had taken Amarintha and her children into their home to await the return of Daniel. When the family was finally reunited they decided
to make their home in Arkansas. During the war Daniel served in the C.S.A. In 1865 he died at 38. Amarintha became ill. One day as she lay upon her bed, she raised up on her pillow and saw through
a crack of the door a man approaching her house. Immediately she recognized him. "It's brother William", she sighed with relief. And it was, for when Jacob had learned of Daniel's death, he had
sent William to bring Amarintha and the children home. William J. SNIDER, his sister and her children made the trip back to S.C. by wagon, boat and at Memphis they boarded the "cars".
Notes for Amarintah Mary SNIDER Mary returned to S.C. from Arkansas in 1869 with her brother, William SNIDER. When Mary died her
father, Jake SNIDER, took the children in and raised them.
Children of William Daniel PARLER and Amarintah Mary SNIDER were as follows:
+ 13341 Laura Catherine Parler, born 6 Dec 1855 in South Carolina. She married James Edward Hungerpiller .
+ 13342 Alexander Robert Parler, born 4 Oct 1857 in South Carolina. He married (1) Louise (Jenkins) Parler. He married (2) Blanche (Wilson) Parler.
+ 13343 Edward Arant Parler, born about 1859 in Elloree, Sumter County, South Carolina; died 13 Dec 1934 in Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida. He married (1) Maggie (Chapman) Parler , born in
Scotland. He married (2) Louise (Maxwell) Parler , born in Abbeville, South Carolina; died after 1934. "Times and Democrat" (Sat.) 15 Dec.1934, Obit. A native of Elloree, died at his home in Jacksonville,
Fla. He went to Fla. as a young man and has been successful in business there. He was survived by his 2nd wife, a son and two daughters.
