The History of Norwegian People

The flag of Norway is a red, white, and blue Scandinavian cross (off-center cross) design. The ratio of the Norwegian flag's height to its width is 8:11.

Denmark had ruled Norway from the 1300s until 1814, when Sweden united with Norway. Norway's flag was adopted on July 17, 1821, during the period when Norway was united with Sweden. The Norwegian flag depicts the flag of Denmark with a blue cross added. The colors were chosen from the French flag as a symbol of liberty and revolution. Norway became an independent kingdom in 1905.

More History of Norwegian People

by Knut GJERSET Ph.D. 1915

Norway is in Northern Europe and lies north of the 58th parallel in the north and about 1/3 of Norway is north of the Artic Circle. Norway is on the same latitude as Alaska, but due to the warm gulf stream currents coming up the Atlantic Ocean, Norway has cool summers and warmer winters. The weather resembles the State of Washington and British Columbia, Canada. The winters are long and dark in the northern parts. The summer is almost continuous daylight from the last of May until the end of July as the sun never sets. Norway is a little bigger than Great Britain and Ireland, or the same size as New England, New York, plus New Jersey combined. Studies show Germanic tribes migrated from the Baltic region and populated the Scandinavian countries. A.W. BRAGGER shows in his report (we only know from the Runic inscription that the Germanic people came to this area) Norway has only 3% usable farm land, 24% is forest and the remaining is mountains, ice caps and lakes. The population of Norway was starting to increase in the year 800. Norway with only 3% farm land and a extensive sea coast, the people became seaman, which produced a hardy and energetic race and fostered the spirit of daring and adventure. The Viking age started in about the year of 790 and lasted until 1030. They sailed to France, Spain, and into Italy. The Vikings were made up of Swedes, Danes and Norwegians. The Swedes traveled mostly into Russia. The danes were mostly in England and France. The Danes and Norwegians combined forces on many of their raids, mostly in England and France. The Vikings brought their wives and family to these areas and started to farm. Norwegians populated Iceland in 870 and 982 Greenland was discovered. Lief "the Lucky" discovered America in the year 1000. The Viking Ship "Hjemkomost" was built by Robert ASP of Moorhead, Minnesota. The ship was the actual size of a Viking ship; it was 76 1/2 feet long, 17 1/2 feet wide, 7 feet high and weighed 16 tons. Robert ASP died, but his children, with a total crew of 12 people sailed the ship from Duluth, Mn. May 6, 1982 to Bergen, Norway and arrived July 17,1982. The year 1030 was the end of the Viking period and they became Christians. The period from 1030 until 1536 was called the middle ages. In 1349 the black death came to Norway from England and killed 1/3 of the population. Norway and Denmark was ruled by a common King from 1380 to 1536. Denmark controlled the governmental affairs from 1536 until 1814. The Lutheran Church took the place of the Catholic Church September 2, 1537. Denmark sided in with France during the great Napoleonic war and they lost. The Treaty of Kiel terminated the Union of Norway and Denmark on Jan.14,1814 and ceded Norway to Sweden in the transaction. The Norwegians were controlled by the Swedes, but the Norwegians met at Eldvold and drafted their own constitution, the 17th May and declared as their independence day. Sweden controlled Norway until June 7,1905, when they became independent. During the 1800s Norway's population began to rise again. According to the 1900 Census 44.7% of the population was related to the farm industry. The system of the Norwegians was that the oldest son always received the farm and the remaining members had to look for work some place else. The younger members of the family came to America. Yes they came by the thousands. The main factor was free land. Friends and relatives wrote back to Norway and also advertising done by railroads and steamship lines. The period from 1836-1842 there was a few hundred per year, in 1843 it rose to 1600 and since this period it has been over 1000 each year. There was a poor potato crop in 1847 and it rose to 4000 and stayed that way until 1865-6 when it jumped to 15,455. In 1873 it dropped to 10,357, 4,000 in 1874-8. In 1882 the number rose to 28,804 and during the 1880s it was 20,000 each year except in 1884, 1886-1889 and 13,000 to 15,000 per year. In 1893 it was 19,000 and 1894 it dropped to 5,642. In 1900 it was 11,000, 1901,1907 it reached 27,000, but in 1908 it dropped to 8,500, 1909 to 16,000, 1910 to 19,000 in the period from 1850 to 1911 707,986 left Norway to live in the USA. Land was free to homestead and most of the Norwegians came to the upper Midwest, Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Iowa and South Dakota. The 1900 federal census of the U.S. shows 49.8% of the Norwegians were farmers, 42.3% for the Swedes and 30% for the Danes.
