Thomas H. Hawkins of Carmichaels, Greene Co.

   Thomas H. Hawkins, aged 87 years, retired farmer and stockman, passed 
away at his home in Carmichaels on Saturday, July 6, 1929, following an
illness of only a few hours.  He had been in customary health, becoming
ill at about 11 o.clock in the evening of indigestion.  Death followed at 
4 o'clock, Saturday evening.
   Mr. Hawkins was born August 11, 1842, at Jefferson, a son of Richard 
C. Hawkins and Emmaline Wise Hawkins.  His family was well known
thrughout this section.  He was twice married.  In 1873 he was married 
to Sarah Francis BAILEY, who died July 10, 1889.  On September 17, 1891, 
he was married to Mary Oliver BELL, whose death occurred October 4, 
1927.  He was the father of three children, of whom two are living:
Ella  B., Hawkins, cashier of the Union National Bank, New Castle, 
and Harriett H. ADAMS, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  He leaves four 
grandchildren, and three brothers and one sister;  Joseph W. Hawkins, 
of Waynesburg; Samuel C. Hawkins  and William B. Hawkins of Jefferson, 
and Mrs Theresa HARVEY, of Ruttan.
   Early in life, Mr. hawkins attended the old Monongahela college at 
Jefferson, and later attended Waynesburg college.  He taught school in
Greene county for four years and then tool up farming and stockraising
in Cumberland township, near Carmichaels, being quite successful.
Ten years ago he retired, moving to Carmichaels.  He was much interested
in church and Sunday school work, being a member of the Presbyterian
church and an elder, and for 28 years serving as Sunday school superintendent.
   Funeral services were held in the late home at 2 p.m. Monday, the Rev. 
J. O. MILLER, pastor of the First Presbyterian chuch officiating.
Interment was made in the Laurie Point cemetery.
