John Palmer of Washington County, Pa.
John Palmer, b. abt. 1720, d. June 1798 in Strabane tp., Wash. Co..
John was one of the first settlers in this section of Pennsylvania which is now
Washington Co., which county was organized 1781 from Westmoreland Co. organized
1773 from Bedford Co. organized 1771 from Cumberland Co. organized 1750 from
Lancaster Co. which was organized 1729 from Chester Co.. Virginia claimed this territory
as part of Augusta Co. and in 1776 created three counties for Ohio and in 1780 ceded
Westmoreland Co. to Pennsylvania.
We do not know when John Palmer settled here or from what place he came.
Probably it was shortly before the Revolutionary War. We think John was the father
of the others mentioned herein and those who were in the 1790 Census.
The records of this section have given the name Palmer various spellings, such as
Parmer, Parmor, Parmour, Palmore and Parremore. However, we feel quite certain
that these are mis-spellings and that they all belonged to some particular Palmer family,
many of whom later moved into the northwestern part of West Virginia and on into Ohio.
The name of Parremore seems to have been found first in Somerset Co., Md. before 1700, and
many of this line have changed the name into Palmer. These Palmers in Washington Co., Pa.
may have come from Somerset Co., Md. or from the eastern shore of Md. but there is no proof.
The 1790 Census for Washington Co. lists the following persons under the name
Parremore: Nathaniel, Jonathan, John Sr. and John Jr.. Furthermore, in Ohio Co., West Va.
(originally Virginia) in 1788 we find Jesse, Jesse Jr. and Benjamin who were listed as taxables.
Their names have been given as both Parremore and Palmer.
There is one deed on record in Washington Co. that throws some light on the relationship of
these persons. This deed is dated June 16, 1798 (cont.)
John Palmer, b. abt. 1720, p.2 (cont.)
signed by Thomas Parremore and Elizabeth, John Paramore and Sophia, Henry Ferguson
and Eleanor, Jesse Edginton and Margaret and Mary Palmer all of Strabane township,
Washington Co., Pa. to Nathaniel Paramore of the same place, of a tract of land of
339½ acres granted to Thomas Paremore and Henry Ferguson under date of Mar. 16, 1786 by
Patent (Patent Book #6, p, 162), which they deeded to John Paramore Sr. Dec. 12, 1790 (Vol. 9, p. 81)
and Whereas said John Paramore Sr., lately deceased, left an unfinished will by which it appears
that Nathaniel Paramore and his heirs were to have said tract (Vol. 10, p. 149). From this deed we
conclude that John Sr. was the father of Thomas, John, Eleanor, Margaret, Mary and Nathaniel.
We also conclude that Jesse Sr. of Ohio Co. had the two sons
Jesse Jr. and Benjamin and that they do not belong to this John family but are of a distinct line,
perhaps from Kent Co., Md. where we have found a
Jesse of proper age. This family descended from the William Palmer family of Westchester, N.Y..
John Sr. could be a grandson of John who died in 1670 in Somerset Co., Md. leaning
children Thomas, John, Arnold and Richard.
Thomas, b. 1744
John, b. abt. 1746
Eleanor, b. 1758, m. Henry Ferguson 1776 Henry was born 1755 in Wash. Co., Pa., d. in
Hopedale, Harrison Co., Ohio. He was a private in 1st Company, 4th Batt. Cumberland Militia.
Margaret, m. Jesse Edginton
Nathaniel, b. abt. 1750
John Palmer, b. 1746-50
John Palmer was the John Parramore Jr. who was in the US Census of 1790 in
Washington Co. Pa. with 1/2/5. John Palmer was in the Washington Co. Rangers
1778-83 from Westmoreland Co., Pa. (Pa. Arch. Vol. 23, p. 199). After the deed of
1778-83 in which he joined in Strabane township he probably moved on into
Jefferson Co., Ohio and perhaps into Belmont Co.. Some of the Palmers and
Parramores in those counties are his descendants but we have been unable
to obtain any record of them.
John Palmer, probably a son of the John above, was a corporal in the war of 1812
from Jefferson Co., Ohio(The 20th Century History of Stuebenville and Jefferson Co.
by Boyle, 1910, p. 155). John Palmer and also Matthew Palmer were in
Capt. Morgan's Company from Monongalia, W.Va. in 1812.
John Parremore moved from Jefferson Co., Ohio in 1813
(History of Richland Co., Ohio by Graham 1880, p. 876).
He had a son Mordecai B. Paramore who was born
July 26, 1823 in Springfield and was a farmer in Sandusky-town,
Richland Co. Ohio. (Hist. of Richland Co. 1880, p. 876).
The Palmers of Union Township, Belmont Co. , Ohio could be
children of this John. They were the following;
John, over 45 in the 1820 Census Res. Union tp. in 1820 Belmont Co.
Jonathan, 26-45 in 1820 Census, Res. Union Co. in 1820 "
George, 40-50 in 1840 Census Res. 2 2 2 1840 "

Thomas Palmer, 1744
d. Aug. 21, 1839 in his 95th year in Strabane Tp. , Washington Co. , Pa.
Thomas was clearly the son of John who died 1798. He is said to have settled at
first on Chartier's Creek. The first record of receiving land was Nov. 4, 1780
when he had a warrant for 400 acres in Washington Co. (Penn. Arch., Ser. 3, Vol. 26, p. 595).
He was probably the Thomas Palmer who was in Hanover Tp. in Washington Co. on Dec. 9, 1794.
Thomas was in the 1790 U.S. Census as Thomas Parramore with four males over 16 years,
including himself, two males under 16 and seven females. We have no record of his children
but he evidently had a large number, as shown by the census, born from about 1764 to about 1788.
His death is given in the History of Washington Co., Pa. by Forrest, 1926, Vol. 1, p. 3(?)93.
The names of two sons are given- Daniel and Thomas.
On the same page
Nathaniel Palmer, b. 1745-50
Nathaniel was another son of John Palmer Sr. of Washington Co. Pa.
and a brother of Thomas above. He was in the 1790 Census with 1/5/1 in
Washington Co. He was in Capt. Mun's Washington Co. Militia.

Nathaniel moved from Washington Co., Pa. to Jefferson Co., O. and probably continued
to reside there the rest of his life. He was listed as an early settler in Island Creek tp. in
that county. He was also listed as residing in Athens tp., Harrison Co., O. by 1811.
We have a record of only three children.

d. Dec. 24, 1816 in Vermillion, Ashland Co., Ohio
The first record we have of this Jonathan Palmer is his appearance in the 1790 U.S.
Census in Washington Co., Pa. under the name of Parremore, with one male over 16,
which was himself, one male under 16 and one female. Therefore, he was a comparatively
young man and was probably born about 1765, and could have been a son of Thomas Palmer,
who was born 1744. Jonathan moved later to Jefferson Co., Ohio and in 1810 to Vermillion,
Ashland Co., Ohio, where he continued to reside the rest of his life as a farmer.
The Hist. of Medina Co., O., pub. 1881, p. 851, states that he had ten children and that the
oldest one was Ephraim, and that he also had a son James, who was residing in Perry tp.,
Ashland Co. as late as 1863. This Hist. of Medina Co. would also indicate that he had sons
Nathaniel, George and John.
