WILLIAM PALMER, b. 1787-8 in Charlotte or Halifax Co., Va.
d. 1866 in Fayette, Greene or Brown Co., O.
m. Margaret Whiteside Jan. 25, 1814 in Fayette Co., O.
b. 1795 in Ky., d. 1865 in Fayette, Greene or Brown Co., O.
Da. of Dr. Joseph and Mary (Clifford) Whiteside of Cynthiana, Ky. (Comp. of Amer. Gen., Vol. p.)
William went with his father to Tennessee when a mere child shortly after the death of his
mother, and was left an orphan at an early age. He was brought up by his sister Mary Jane and
her husband, and from Tennessee they moved to Kentucky. About 1805 he and his next older
brother Thomas went to Ohio and located in what was then known as Greene Co. He later
purchased a large tract of land in the S. W. part of Fayette Co., O., the lands also extending into
portions of Greene and Clinton Cos., and continued to reside there the rest of his life. He was
one of the original settlers in this section of the State (Hist. of Fayette Co., by Allen, 1914, p.
527; Pioneer Record and Rem. of the Early Settlers and Settlement of Fayette Co., O., by
Putnam, 1872, p. 71).

JOHN PALMER, b. 1715-25 in King William Co., Va.
d. 1769 in King William Co.
m. Mary
We have no knowledge of this John other than information from John Waller Palmer, who stated
that his grandfather James was the son of John and Mary of King William Co. and that John died
1769 in that county, and further, that his grandfather James had a brother Charles. We have no
further knowledge as to any other children of this John. However, we think the Martin Palmer
who married Elisabeth Powers on Dec. 24, 1781 in Goochland Co., Va. Was quite likely a son,
and possibly that Francis Palmer with wife Caroline Dulaney was another son. As to the
parentage of John, we are still in the dark, but think that he was the son of Martin Palmer of
King William Co., who was born about 1685.
We are not certain whether John Palmer lived his entire life in King William Co. On June 25,
1747, John Palmer was granted 400 acres in Goochland Co. on both sides of the Cat Branch of
the Willis River, bounded by Henry Cary,Edmund Gray and William McGinnis (Vol. 25, p. 32, Land Patents).
On March 1, 1752, John Palmer was again granted 400 acres in Albemarle Co. at the head
of the Cat Branch of the Willis River, bounded by Henry Cary's land ( Vol. 32 p. 350, Land Patents).
In 1747, John Palmer was listed in the Processioning list for St. James
Southam Parish in Powhatan Co., Va. (Parish Rec. in Baltimore, Md.). We think these above records apply to
the John Palmer of King William Co. We can not place this John Palmer other than as above stated. This would,
therefore, make him a brother of Martin who advertised the sale of his plantation in King
William Co. and then moved to Charlotte and Halifax Cos., Va.

MARTIN PALMER, b. abt. 1750-5 prob. in King William Co., Va.
m. Elizabeth Powers Dec. 24, 1781 in Goochland Co., Va.
Da. of William and ( ) Powers
Martin was in the No. Carolina Militia before the Revolutionary War. He was on the Payroll of
Capt. James Thackston's Company of the Orange Co., No. C. Militia from May 1, 1771 to June
29, 1771. He was later in the Revolutionary War from the Hillsboro District of Orange Co., N.C.
and on May 15, 1783 receipted for 30 pounds, as balance of pay that was due him for
services. He was on the tax lists of the Hillsboro Dist. from 1782 until at least 1790, and was listed as being on
a jury in Nov. 1795 in Orange Co. N.C. He was in the 1790 U.S. Census in the Chatham Dist. of Granville Co. N.C..
There was also a William Palmer in the 1790 U. S. Census in the Hillsboro or Goshen Dist. of
Granville Co., but we are unable to show any relationship with Martin, unless he was a brother,
or possibly a son. There was, however, a James Palmer who was born in Hillsboro, Orange Co.,
Nov. 19, 1788, who probably was a son. We have not as yet established a connection. Other
children of Martin may be as follows.

Elisha Palmer, b. abt.1795 Va.
m. Anna Wetherby abt 1817 Va.
We have no record of Elisha other than he was from Virginia.
This data was given to us by Elisha J. Palmer and his other children to the effect that Martin Wetherby Palmer was also born in Virginia and when young moved to Tennessee.
The 1820 U.S. Census of Giles Co. Tenn. shows Elisha with one male between 18 and 26 years, one female between 16 and 26 years, and one male under 10 years. This one child under 10 evidently refers to Martin Wetherby. There is also a Henry in this same census in Giles Co. who could have been a brother of Elisha. We have a record of no other children of Elisha other than this one.

Children:

Martin Wetherby, b. abt 1818

Page 6954

Martin Wetherby Palmer, b. abt 1818 in Va.
d. Dec. 8, 1888 in Waverly, Morgan Co. Ill.
m. Nancy Ann Maxfield (April 10, 1843 Lauderdale Co. Ala.- spe notes)
b. 1829 in Bedford Co. Tenn. d. July 7, 1914 in Waverly, Ill., Da. of James and Mary (Hanes) Maxfield of Bedford Co. Tenn.
Martin W. moved from Virginia to Tennessee when a young man, married there, and moved to Florence, Lauderdale Co. Ala. While in Alabama he was drafted for the Confederate Army, but not believing in slavery, he fled to Illinois and located near Waverly, Morgan Co. in that state, where he continued to reside the rest of his life. Descendants have given Martin W. as the son of Elisha Palmer and Anna Wetherby of Virginia, but no location has been given, nor any data regarding Elisha given. We are, therefore, uncertain as to the parentage of Elisha and whether he continued to reside his entire life in Virginia. Nine children of Martin W. have been given us, but only one son, Elisha James, has been carried out. All of the children were probably born in Florence Ala. and went to Illinois with their parents. We are giving the children in the order that they were furnished us. The father Elisha was in the 1820 U.S. Census in Giles Co., Tenn. with one male between 18 and 26 years of age, one female between 16 and 26 years of age, and one male under 10 years. This would indicate that Elisha and his wife were about 25 years of age and would, therefore, be born about 1795.
Therefore, the son Martin W. was the one under 10 years of age, and being the only child given in the census, was probably born about 1818. There was also a Henry Palmer in the same census in Giles Co. with himself and wife between 26 and 45 years of age, three males under
10 years and two females between 10 and 16 years. Henry was, therefore, born about 1780-5 and could have been a brother of Elisha.
