Victor Cemetery is located in the once thriving community of Victor, in the west edge of Erath Co., Texas. Formerly called Flat Creek Community, this town contained a school, churches, shops, a number of homes, and is believed to have had a thousand residents at one time. A train passed by about a half mile south. The cemetery is all that remains, though some newer homes have been built nearby. Part of the school foundation is still visible in the lot south of the cemetery. This lot is now owned by the Victor Cemetery Association. The ruins of a government built vat for dipping cattle is located about a hundred yards northeast of the cemetery on the north side of the road. This cemetery, sold to the community by Steve Keith in 1889, is nicely fenced and well kept. The cemetery is located about 10 miles west of Dublin, on FM 2156, past Round Grove and Highland communities. To the west, FM 2156 intersects Hwy 16 between De Leon and Desdemona. The Victor Cemetery Association has built a covered pavilion on the west side, where the annual meeting and pot luck dinner are held on the last Saturday morning in May. There are approximately 438 identified graves and 424 unidentified graves. A large number of the unidentified graves have been located by dowsing. GPS coordinates: 321206N, 982958W, 1298' elevation Each grave is now assigned a number-letter-number for easy identification. The first number refers to the Section Map on which the grave begins. Many graves extend onto the map to the east or south. The letter refers to the row. Rows run north to south beginning with 'A' on the west side and continuing to 'EE' on the east. The last number is the grave number within that row. Numbers begin with # 1 on the north end, and continue up to # 94 on the south, with many numbers deliberately omitted, to be used later if needed. Retrieve the grave number from the following Alphabetical List before attempting to use the Numerical List or Cemetery Maps. The grave number is listed at the very end of the data about each individual, and is linked to the map on which the grave begins. That number is followed by a picture of the tombstone if the marker is for the deceased. Tombstones for living persons will not be pictured here. Some readings reflect more data than appeared on the stones.
