According to Sylvia Heath, as told to her by her grandmother and mother, Sarah Ann fell in love as a young woman, and Gilbert refused to allow her to marry the man. He supposedly said "he had only one daughter, and that this fellow was not good enough for her." Sarah Anne was well educated and never married. Sylvia also relates that both of Sarah's brothers called on her to help when they had problems within the family. She also helped William with his children after his wife, Nancy, died.
