| Isabel Courtney married to our Major John Hamilton that fought in the War of 1812 After many years of research, it appears this John Courtney and his wife Isabella were most probably the parents of John Courtney (born c1773, Pennsylvania; died before 1855, Ohio), who married Susannah Carter and whose family later went to Minnesota and Iowa before heading west in 1868 in the same wagon train as Jacob Houk, whose wife was Sarah Courtney. Documents on file in Orphan’s Court, Westmoreland County, PA (copies of which are provided by Mrs. Rose Anderson, Albany, OR) read as follows: (a) “John Courtney...Memorandum that on the twelfth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty one Letters of Administration of all and singular, the Goods & Chattles, Rights & Credits which were of John Courtney, late of Westmoreland County, deceased, were granted to Izabella Courtney and John Giffen, the said Administrators is to make a true & perfect inventory and file the same in the Register’s Office, at or before the twelfth day of February next and to make a true and just account calculation and reckoning of their administration, on or before the twelfth day of January next, ensuing the date hereof.” (b) “John Courtney deceased...Be it remembered that on the 13th day of January, AD 1781, Letters of Administration on the Estate of John Courtney Deceased was granted unto Isabella Courtney & John Giffen they having given bond of two thousand pounds for the faithful performance thereof. William McGeary and William Thompson, Sureties. Administrators sworn.” (c) At an adjourned Court of Common Pleas held at Hannas Town for the County of Westmoreland the first day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty five, Before John Moore, Christopher Truby and Michael Huffnagle, Esquires, Justices of the same Court... “John Courtney Deceased...James Courtney and Robert Courtney, Sons of John Courtney Deceased, being above the age of fourteen years, come into Court and choose James Lawson their Step-Father to be guardian over their Estates & Persons during their minority.” (d) At an Orphan Court held at Hanna Town for the County of Westmoreland the first Day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty five. Present: John Moore, Christopher Truby, William Jack, and Michael Huffnagle, Esquires, Justices of the same Court... “John Courtney Deceased...Isabella Courtney and John Giffen Administrators of all and singular the Goods and Chattles Rights and Credits which were of John Courtney late of Mount Pleasant Township Deceased, having produced To the Court the Account of their administration on the Estate aforesaid. Amounting to £248.12.0 out of which their payments and disbursements amount to £44.15.1, there remains a Ballance in their hands amounting to £208.16.11 which after Deducting twelve shillings the Expense of the Court and £6.17.6 allowed by the Court to the Administrators for their Trouble and Expense, The remainder being £196.8.5. The Court Order to be distributed according to Law. Viz.
