May 2, 1997--Kaukauna (Wisconsin)-- A stock-car driver died after crashing into a wall during qualifying Thursday at the Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna.
Jim Pagel, 42, of Appleton died about 1:10 a.m. Friday after undergoing surgery at Theda Clark Regional Medical Center, hospital officials said.
Pagel spun out Thursday night at the end of a two-lap qualifying run, hitting the outside wall about 80 mph. The impact left an imprint of the entire left side of his car and its tires in the wall and it took almost an hour to get the unconscious Pagel out of the car using a hydraulic rescue tool.
Crew member Ken DeJardin said Pagel was slumped over as rescuers ran to the car. He said Pagel's arm was pinned against a roll bar.
The cause of the accident was not known.
Track owner Roger Van Daalwyk didn't see the accident but said he didn't believe water on the raceway was to blame.
"The track was dry, dry as could be expected after we got the 2 inches of rain and snow this morning. We had guys here from 7:30 in the morning until the time the track opened working on it," Van Daalwyk said. "There was nothing in the (racing) groove."
Pagel was beginning his sixth season of racing at the half-mile track.
The fatality was the second in the history of the track. Larry Detjens died on Aug. 1, 1981, after an accident in an ARTGO Challenge Series race. (from Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)
