NOTES ON CONTEN NECK

 

l. Charlton's Ferry over Swift Creek which is now in SW Pitt County became

Hollingsworth Ferry and retained that name until l776

2. Eastward side of Great Contentnea Creek and Little Contentnea and land

drained by streams entering these two comprised that part of Contentnea Neck given

to Craven from Pitt in l787

 

 

 

 

JOSEPH PHILLIPS

 

l. Joseph had to be born by l765-70 - md Ferebee - surname unknown - not of

Edgecombe family

2. was in Revo War - information from N.C. Genealogy - R975.6 N8l3N

a. l820 a Warrant was issued to heirs of Joseph Phillips for 274 Ac

b. l820 - Pitt Co - Dep of Pherebe Phillips: RE: Maryan Taylor being heir

of James Taylor

c. l820 - POA - Curtis Philips of Pitt Co only heir of Joseph Philips

d. l820 - Pitt Co - Dep of Mrs. Salley Clark RE: Curtis Philips

e. l820 - Pitt Co - Dep of Mrs. Pherebe Philips RE: her son Curtis Philips

being heir of Joseph Philips

 

3. I have seen a Bible owned by a descendant of Thomas Cauley Phillips which

states Curtis was the son of Shadrack Phillips. Ferebee's statements were

accepted by the U.S. Government for a Pension and despite the Bible I think Joseph

was the father. There was a Shadrack in the Craven County family, but nothing

is known about him. Ferebee lived in Pitt County and it appears Curtis grew up

there. They may not have even been part of the Lenoir family. It is possible

Ferebee md 2nd Shadrack who reared Curtis. Curtis was very young when his

father died and if Shadrack was a close relative, Thomas may have made an error.

Again Thomas was very young when his father died.

the daughter of Henry Tull and the widow of a Cox

 

6. In l994, I saw the Bible in question and indeed it does say Curtis was the

son of Shadrack. Did Ferebee lie?

NOTE: The above Bible not in good condition and the record notations are

written in margins and all over the Bible.

 

Mrs. Monette said there is more than one cemetery at the Stephen C. Phillips

farm, but she was confused as to the location and I think she meant one cemetery

was across the highway from Wooten's Mill between Mewborn and Taylor's

crossroads. She did say there was a Benjamin Phillips in a cemetery in Jones County on

the road between Mayville and Trenton. I am not sure, but she may be referring

to the place where Spencer, son of Stephen Carr Phillips and his family are

buried.

l. Found in Vertical Files in LCC Heritage Room - Samuel Phillips md Ada

Malpass - they were the parents of Arthur Phillips who was aged 23 during the Civil

War. It was not clear who was 23 during the War, Samuel or Arthur

JOHN F. PHILLIPS

 

l. John F. md Elizabeth Wells - Craven Marriage Bonds 23 April l835 -

children were John Jr. and Thomas - grandson William and granddaughter Argent

according to information found in the Elizabeth Moore Collection at ECC.

 

2. Descendants say the family has always believed that this John jumped ship

in this area and was not part of any local family.

Miss Claudia Phillips, dau of John L. Phillips, of New Bern in the l8th year of

2. Until I saw this, I felt John S. and John L. might be the same person as

there are entirely TOO many John's about this time; however, there is no Claudia

in the John S. Bible so there was a John L.

2. There was also a Shadrack with a Mason in S.C.

l. lived in Clay County, Ky with Jemima Hardy Phillips - an old man

2. found on Craven County Records purchasing from estate of John Hardy

3. on l769 Tax List living with Simon Griffin which means he was born no later

than l753 to be at least l6 in l769. This indicates he was probably the son of

Mason as Mark was probably not born until c l736.

l. CHECK OUT - Isabella Mason imported several people c l700 - she brought

several from Liverpool - was she in Northumberland Co, Va. - there was a Thomas

Phillips in Northumberland for 3 years. Isabella brought in a Solomon Mason who

ended up in PG Co Va later.

l. Argent and James in Bertie in l784 - Bertie seems to be where the
