Generation One
1 . WILLIAM 1 ORMOND was born on 16 December 1696 (William and Watkins Ormond Family Bible, Copied by Frederick Lee Edwards from the original in the possession of Mr. Roy Turnage of Ayden, NC on Februry 12, 1955.). He married Ann Darden,daughter of Jacob Darden and Ann (Darden), in Beaufort County, North Carolina, on 25 July 1735 (Ibid.). William died on 20 September 1739 in Beaufort County, North Carolina, at age 42 (Ibid.).
It is not known what, if any, the relationship between William and Wyriot Ormond was but most likely there was some connection.
Wyiot was bc 1707 and died CA 1758. Lee Edwards thought there could have been some relationship with Sir Richard Everard but could not find it.
ANN DARDEN was born in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, circa 1707 (Ibid.). She married Abraham Adams in Bath County,
North Carolina (Ibid.). Ann died on 2 February 1750 (Ibid.).

4 . WILLIAM 2 ORMOND ( William1 ) was born in Beaufort County, North Carolina, on 5 December 1738 (Ibid.). He married Ann Watkins, daughter of William Watkins and Jane Darden, in Beaufort County, North Carolina, on 18 June 1762 (Ibid.). William died on 4 May 1815 in Greene County, North Carolina, at age 76 (James Ormond Copy Book, East Carolina University, Joyner Library,

BEAUFORT COUNTY DEEDS
This purchase of land is the first property found for William Ormond and he sold it in 1768 when he moved to Dobbs County.
Mallards Creek is shown as Adams Creek on the Edward Moseley Map and is today called Back Creek. It is very close to the town of Bath. Information from the papers of Frederick Lee Edwards.
This Indenture Made the twenty ninth day of augt in the year of our Lord one Thousand seven hundred & thirty seven Between PHILIP SHUTE Gent & wife with free will & voluntary consent of MARY his wife of Beaufort prect in No Carolina of the one part & WILLIAM ORMOND prect & providence aforesaid of the other part - in consideration of the sum of thirty five pounds to them paid by the said WILLIAM ORMOND sell that parcel called & known by the name of Raggu Point, on the NS Pamplico River, in Beauort Precinct, containing two hundred and five acres - beginning at a pine on the river sideabout half way from the mouth of Mallard Creek
& the place where the said SHUTE hath built, down courses of said creek --- being part of a tract of six hundred acres Granted to Capt JOHN DRINKWATER on 9 November 1713 and DRINKWATER conveyed to said PHILIP SHUTE as part of a tract containing two hundred & twenty acres sold by THOMAS SELLY to the said PHILLIP bearing date the fifth of January 1719.

In the Name of God Amen I William Ormond of Greene County in the State of North Carolina Farmer being in health & of Sound Mind & memory but reflecting on the uncertainty of Life do therefore make this my last Will & Testament. & first I resign my Soul to my Heavenly Father, my Body to be decently buried & my Estate I dispose of as follows
I give to my daughter Ann Harper one Negro named Peter, & one brass skillet, one Iron Mortar and pestle, two pewter Tankards, & two Chairs to her heirs & Assigns forever
I give to my Son Thomas my Sound and great Table
I give to my Son James Ormond five Negros named Bob, David & Fanney & her two Children Peter & Lyd & their Increase from this day to him his heirs & Assigns forever

In the Name of God Amen, I William Ormond Junior of Greene County in the State of N. Carolina
preacher of the Gospel; being of sound Mind & Memory, but calling to mind the uncertainty of this
Life; and knowing it is appointed for Man to Die: Do therefore make and Ordain this to be my last
Will & Testament.
First, I humbly recommend my immortal Soul into the Hands of my Heavenly Father, my un-
immortal Body to be buried in a plain Christian like manner, and should there be any Debts I desire
them to be paid immediately and all my worldly Estate I dispose of as follows.
Item 1st.- I give and bequeath unto my Father William Ormond his Heirs & Assigns forever my
Silver Watch which I now wear: and also Six Volumes of Books containing Mr. Wesley's Notes on the
Old & New Testaments.
Item 2nd.- I desire that my Executors Appropriate the sum of five hundred dollars of my Money to
the following purpose, viz, that they purchase and get a Deed for one Acre of Land within one mile of
the cross Roads (near my father's Dwelling House) & that they build or have erected there-on as large
& as good a Church or Chapel as said Five hundred dollars will pay for, said House to be built of
Wood or Brick, as my Executors may think proper: which said Church or Chapel shall be principally
Occupied by those Ministers commonly called "Methodist Preacher" provided they hold with and
believe in and strive to maintain the present Articles of our Faith as touching Salvation beeing freely
offered to a lost World through our lord Jesus Christ.
Item 3rd.- I give & bequeath to Sister Ann Harper's nine children fifty dollars each; which four
hundred & fifty dollars I desire my Executors to pay into the Hands of John Harper & Ann Harper as
soon as my business can be settled; & said money applied by their parents to the Schooling or raising
of said nine children as they may think proper; and should any of the said Children Die, the others to
Heir their parts equally, of the Deceased.
Item 4th.- I give and Bequeath unto my Sister Ann Harper, my brothers Thomas Ormond, James
Ormond and Watkins Ormond; and also my youngest Sisters Betsy Ormond and Mary Hart, them their
Heirs & Assigns forever, all the remainder of my Estate, to be equally Divided amongst all of them, by
my Executors & five good Men chosen by my Executors for that purpose, my money & all other
Property to be divided without exposing any part thereof to private or public sale, & each of my three
brothers & three Sisters above named to receive their portions as soon as my matters can be wound up
& Settled. But should any of my above named brothers or Sisters Die without leaving a lawful Heir of
their Body I desire that their portions be equally divided betwixt all my surviving brothers & Sisters,
or their surviving Heirs begotten by their Bodies.
Item 5- Lastly I nominate & appoint John Harper, Thomas Ormond, James Ormond & Watkins
Ormond Executors to this my last Will & Testament given under my hand & Seal this Sixth Day of
January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and Three.

Instruction given by William Ormond, Jr. to his Executors.
You will find my last Will & Testament Sealed up in the Drawer of my large Chest at my Father's;
which I solemnly charge & sincerely reqquest you to Execute. All of my valuable papers are left in
Care of Mr. Edmund Taylor, Junior of Granville County near Island Creek. All the obligations will be
on demand by the first of November next, therefore no person need go up till about that time; then the
business may be settled with ease.
I hope brother Harper & some suitable person will go up prepared to finish the business before they
return. First you will go to Mr. Taylor's & ask my worthy friend for these papers, and after shewing
these instructions he will deliver them & give you some information. When you receive from Mr.
Taylor the following notes you will know you have all.
One Note given by John Sneed to Wm. Ormond for 100 Dollars.
One Note given by Joseph Speed to Wm. Ormond with half profit for
900 Do. One Note given by Samuel Homes to Do. with half profit for 2000 Do. One note given by
Edmund Jones to Do. with interest for 600 Do. One note given by Edmund Jones to Do. for 528.50

You will go on to Joseph Speeds & Samuel Homes', they live near together in Meclenburg about 30
miles from Taylor's, receive from them some Books I left at bro. Speed's. You may return to bro.
Taylor's & get some clothes, Books, Portmanteau & all I left there, & after thanking my precious
friends viz bro. & Sister Taylor & Miss P. Duke for all their kindness shewed me, you'll contrive to get
the 100 Dollars from my friend Sneed without taking any interest. I lent him the money some years
past to Oblidge him. You may write to him to pay you when he can & he'll send it down without
troubling you to go after it. Come down by bro. Daniel Shine's in Franklin about 10 miles above
Lewisburg & get some books I left there. Then go to bro. Edmund Jones in the upper Corner of
Halifax County & he'll settle with you. And if possible my Spirit will be present to console my dear
valuable Friends when you go around telling the news your "Brother William" is no more among
Mortals.
Let each Legatee have their Portion and have directed & build the House I have Described as soon as
possible.

Generation Three
6 . ANN 3 ORMOND ( William2 , William1 ) was born in Greene County, North Carolina, on 14 October 1764 (Ibid.) (Will of
William Ormond.). She married John Harper, son of Alexander Harper and Margaret Kilpatrick, in Greene County, North Carolina, on
28 February 1784 (James Ormond Copy Book.). Ann died on 6 April 1832 at age 67 (John James Ormond Family Bible, Dobbs
County Bible Records, by William L. Murphy.).
According to the will of William Ormond, Ann's brother, she and John Harper had nine children so four are missing.
JOHN HARPER was born circa 1760. John died on 7 November 1827 (James Ormond Copy Book.). Something is not right. I think
this line is correct, but a family group sheet has this John Harper married to Sidney Ann Margaret Ormond daughter of William (son of
Thomas and Margaret).
I have his ca birth as where he was named in the courtsuit as probably the 3rd son.
John was a son of Alexander Harper. In John's will, which I have not seen, there is mention of a slave coming to him from the estate of
William Harper deceased but gave no clue as to his relationship.
John was on the 1816 Greene Co Tax List - in Capt Pope's District - 360 acres - $1020 - 8 black poles - no white indicating he was
over age. There was a Francis just below him who could have been his son Francis but that Francis also had no white poles. There was
also a John Jr probably a son of John Sr. It appears most of the men in Capt Hooker's District were descendants of Alexander I.

THOMAS ORMOND of the said County and State, planter, son of the said WILLIAM ORMOND Senior for the natural love and
affection which he hath & bearth unto the said THOMAS ORMOND his son as also for the better maintence and prefermence of him
the said THOMAS ORMOND hath conveyed…. A certain parcel of lands containing by estimation two hundred and fifty acres
situated in said Greene County on both sides of Pole Cat Swamp, seventy five acres of which land was granted to THOMAS DAIL the
first day of July 1779 and by him sold to the said WILLIAM ORMOND and the other one hundred and seventy five acres is to include
all the lands lying within the line of two patents one of which was granted to THOMAS DAIL May the fourth day 1769 and the other
to WILLIAM SKINNER the 28th day of April `768 (except what lands the said WILLIAM ORMOND hath given out of them two
patents to his son WATKINS ORMOND and except the land sold by THOMAS DAIL to WILLIAM THOMAS and all houses, out
houses, gardens, orchards …..
nevertheless it is the true intent and meaning of these present that the said WILLIAM ORMOND or any person or persons employed
by him shall cut and take away such timber or trees from off the said lands as he thinks proper during his lifetime. WIT ???

3 March 1819 - Indenture between SARAH MOYE of the State of North Carolina and County of Pitt of the one part and CHARLES
EDWARDS of the County of Greene and State aforesaid on the other part for sum of one hundred dollars to me in hand paid by the
aforesaid CHARLES EDWARDS ……conveyed and confirmed a certain tract or parcel of land situated lying and being in the County
of Green on the North Side of Great Contentnea and East side of pole Cat swamp beginning at a pine formerly DUNN's Corner near
the plantation now the sd EDWARDS corner and runs his line South eighteen West ninety four poles to two pines Edwards other
corner then North seventy seven degrees East eighty poles to a pine near the watery branch in VAN PELT's line then with his line

Whereas sometime during the year 1860 CHARLES EDWARDS late of Greene County executed his last Will and Testament in which
he gave a devised to CHARLTON T. EDWARDS a certain tract in Lenoir county --- the following lines are mentioned - the old
PHILLIPS line, the dividing line between me and C. T. EDWARDS and the line does not run where it was generally thought and it
would cut off the dwelling and other houses bequeathed to C. T. EDWARDS which was doubtless contrary to the intention of
CHARLES EDWARDS we have mutually agreed to a change ---- I ELBERT P. EDWARDS of the County of Lenoir for one dollar
paid by JOHN C. ? EDWARDS and LUCRETIA EDWARDS infant children of CHARLTON T. EDWARDS dec assign my rights to
new boundary ---- provided that the D. C. EDWARDS the widow of C. T. EDWARDS shall hold her life estate

I, Thomas Ormond of Greene County, State of North Carolina, being weak, sick and weak of body, but of sound and disposing mind
reflecting on the uncertainly of life, do therefore make and ordain this my last will and testament, thereby revoking all others heretofore
by me made. And first I resign my Soul unto my heavenly Father, my body to be decently buried and my worldly Estate
I dispose of as following being:
1st. I give and bequeath to my beloved wife, Peggy, her heirs and assigns forever all my stock of horses, cattle, sheep, hogs and all my
farming utensils, with all household and kitchen furniture (except what shall hereafter be given away or otherwise disposed of) also
four-fifths of my present whole crop for the support of herself and that part of my family that may remain with her, her Heirs and
Assigns forever. I lend unto my beloved wife, Peggy, for and during her life,
my Houses and plantation whereon she now lives, and my lower field - called the Braxton field, together with all the wood land lying
on the north East-side of Cat Tail Swamp. I also lend unto my beloved wife, Peggy, for and during her life two negroes named
Abraham and Beck and after the death of my beloved wife, Peggy, I give and bequeath all the property above mentioned named and
this lent unto her during her life, unto my two sons, Wesley and Fletcher to be equally divided between them, their Heirs and Assigns
forever.
2nd. I give and bequeath unto my son, William, all the land I now hold on the West side of Pole Cat Swamp, the middle of the swamp
to be the line, all the hogs which he now feeds, and the half of my negro man, York, his Heirs and Assigns forever.
3rd. I give and bequeath to my son, John, all the land I now hold on the east side of Pole Cat Swamp (the middle of the swamp to be
the line) one mare named Snip, three head of cattle, one bed and furniture, the half of my negro man named, York, Twenty-two dollars,
to make him equal with his brother William, one fifth part of the whole of my present crop, and two sows with their pigs, his Heirs and
Assigns forever.
4th. I give and bequeath to my son, Thomas, all my land lying on the southwest side of Cat tail Swamp, and my negro boy named
Noel, his Heirs and Assigns forever.
5th. I give and bequeath to my four daughters, Anne, Betsy, Peggy and Mary, the Seven following negroes, named Peter and Tom,
Sura, Nelly, Ben, Lewis, and Rachel, one thousand dollars in notes and four beds with their furniture, all to be equally divided amongst
them, their Heirs and Assigns forever.
6th. I give and bequeath equally to my two sons, Wesley and Fletcher, after their Mother's death, my houses and plantation whereon I
now live, my lower field called the Braxton field, all the wood land lying on the north east side of Cat Tail Swamp and my two negroes
named Abraham and Beck, their Heirs and Assigns forever.
7th. The residue of my estate not named above, given away or disposed of, I give and bequeath to my beloved wife, Peggy and all my
children (to be equally divided amongst them, their Heirs and Assigns forever.
8th. I hereby appoint and ordain my two brothers Watkins Ormond and James and my two oldest sons, William and John, Executors to
this my last will and testament.

MARGARET (PEGGY) GRIMSLEY was born in Dobbs County, North Carolina, on 20 January 1771 (Ibid.). Margaret died on 13
November 1844 in Greene County, North Carolina, at age 73 (Ibid.). The Thomas Ormond Prayer Book gives Peggy's mother as
Nanney not Ida.
The Elias Franklin Albritton Bibles gives her name as Ann. I am inclined to think Ida is incorrect.
The 10 known children of Thomas 3 Ormond and Margaret (Peggy) Grimsley all born in Greene County, North Carolina, were as

Last will and Testament

State of Alabama Sumter County. Anno Domini One thousand Eight hundred and Sixty Eight.
Know all men by these presents that I, Thomas Ormond, of sound mind, do declare this to be my last
will and Testament, revoking all others ever before made by me - viz, It is my will and desire that my
Nephew, Lemuel T. Ormond be placed in full possession of all my personal and real Estate as
Executor of the same - without giving any Bond or security for management of the same - and further
that no report be made to the Orphans Court - The said Lemuel T. Ormond to manage said Estate just
as if he owned the same - Said Estate to be kept together and managed by said Lemuel T. Ormond to
the best of his Judgement until Cornelia Ormond shall have arrived at the age of twenty years, or until
said Cornelia Ormond shall marry - Said Lemuel T. Ormond is to have the plantation cultivated
ANUALLY [sic] - after paying all necessary expenses of said farm, he is to receive one FOURTH of
the Net proceeds from said farm as a remuneration for his services - Balance (3/4) to be equally
divided among the following nieces and Nephew - Julia F. Ormond, Elisabeth Dixon, William
Ormond, Cornelia Ormond, after paying to Lovey A. Dixon the sum of one hundred dollars
ANUALLY [sic] from the first of January 1869 - Should the said Lovey A. Dixon be living when my
Estate shall be divided, she is to have an equal share with all the other four heirs of said Estate -- It is
my will that Lemuel T. Ormond have full power to buy & sell anything necessary for the Benefit &
management of said Estate and also to make titles to any real Estate that may be sold for a Division.
My will further is that, William Ormond, Elisabeth Edwards, & Margaret Alberton [sic - Albritton]
shall each receive one thousand dollars in gold from the amount now deposited with T. P. Miller &
Co. at Mobile, Alabama - and also that the female Heirs of May [sic] Dixon, viz, Sarah Ann Hart,
Emeline Susan Dixon, Frances Alberton [sic - Albritton], and Nancy Dixon receive one thousand
dollars in gold from same fund, to be equally divided among said female heirs -- . After paying all my
just and legal debts, the balance of my funds not above disposed of, shall be equally divided among all
my legal heirs now in the state of North Carolina.
The Notes which I now hold against Wesly Ormond who resides in the State of Mississippi, shall be
returned to him without payment -- The Eighty acres of land known as the Hutchins Quarter, joining
J. C. Brown on the East, William McDow and George A. Brown on the North, I give to my Nephew
James J. Dixon and I hereby authorise [sic] my Executor Lemuel T. Ormond to make a deed of said
land to said James J. Dixon -- It is my will and desire that my Nephew, Benjamin Franklin Ormond
be paid, in Gold, Eight hundred dollars, as he may need it from Mobile funds above named. It is
further my last will that when Cornelia Ormond shall reach the age of twenty years or marry, then
Lemuel T. Ormond, my Executor shall sell all the personal and real Estate for an equitable Division
among the above mentioned heirs, namely - Julia F. Ormond, Elisabeth Dixon, William Ormond,
Cornelia Ormond, and Lovey Dixon, if she be living.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal this the 28th day of August in the year of our
Lord one thousand Eight hundred and sixty Eight.

Estate of Thomas Ormond deceased This day came Lemuel T. Ormond, the Executor therein named,
and offered for Probate and record a certain writing purporting to be the last will and testament of
Thomas Ormond late of this County, deceased, whereupon the Court set the 5th day of October 1868
to hear said application & the proof that may be submitted in support of the same, and It is ordered by
the Court, that notice of the filing of said application and the day set for hearing the same, be given to
all parties interested, by three successive weekly publications in the "Livingston Journal" a newspaper
published in this County.
It is ordered by the Court that R. Chapman Jr. be and he is hereby appointed guardian ad liteus of
James J. Dixon, Benjamin F. Ormond, Julia F. Ormond, Cornelia Ormond, William Ormond &
Elizabeth Dixon minors heirs of said deceased, to represent and protect their interest in this proceeding
and that he have notice of such appointment.
It is ordered by the Court that subpoenas issue J. E. Brown & J. M. Godfrey, subscribing witnesses to
said will, to be and appear in this Court on the 5th day of October 1868 to give evidence in behalf of
said application.

The petition of Lemuel T. Ormond respectfully represents unto your Honor, that the late Thomas
Ormond, who was an inhabitant of this County at the time of his death, departed this life on the 31st
day of August 1868, at his residence in said County of Sumter, leaving a last Will and testament, duly
signed and published by him, and attested by John E. Brown & J. M. Godfrey, who reside in this
County, in which your petitioner is named executor thereof, which said will is herewith produced to
your Honor, & propounded for probate and record in this Court.
Your petitioner further states that said decedent died leaving no widow; the next of Kin of said
decedent are his brothers and sisters and their children -- "to wit" Wesly Ormond, who is over the age
of twenty one years, and resides in Scott County, Mississipi; William Ormond, Mrs. Elizabeth
Edwards, the widow of J. J. Edwards, & Margaret Alberton [sic - Albritton] wife of James Alberton
[sic - Albritton], who are over the age of twenty one years all of whom reside in North Carolina,
William in the County of Lenoir, & Margaret and Elizabeth reside in Greene; the children of Mary
Dixon deceased, who was the wife of Washington Dixon deceased - "to wit" William T. Dixon, Sarah
Ann Hart, wife of Thomas Hart, Eveline Susan Dixon, Francis Alberton [sic - Albritton], wife of

Ormond aged twenty years, Julia F. Ormond, aged fifteen, and Cornelia Ormond aged nine years, all
of whom reside in Sumter County Ala, and William Ormond Jr, who resides in Greene County North
Carolina, & aged twelve years; and Elizabeth Dixon, whose name is mentioned in said last will and
Testament, who is about eighteen years, & resides in Sumter County Ala.
In consideration of all which, your petitioner prays that a day may be set for the hearing of the matter
of this petition; that subpoenas may issued [sic] to bring in said subscribing witnesses to testify on such
appointed day, that due notice of this application may be given to the said next of Kin of said
deceased; and that such other orders, proceedings, and decrees, may be had and made in the premises,
as may be requisite and proper, to effect the due probate and record of said will according to Law.

This is a typed copy of the Manuscript kept by James Ormond. The original was in the possession of Mrs. Florence Dail Richardson of
Raleigh, a copy in the NC State archives and this copy was prepared from the original in 1955 by Frederick Lee Edwards. The
Manuscript is sixteen typed pages and is mostly religious in nature. It starts 23 February 1806 and ends 14 of May 1828 although there
are several entries by his son, Hardy, in the 1860's. Only the genealogical information has been abstracted for the Greene County
GenWeb Archives site.
James Ormond was the son of William and Ann Watkins Ormond and married 1st Mary Hart and 2nd Elizabeth Edwards.
Saturday June 13th 1818 This day I feel bowed down, I seem to be uncommonly Exercise I mind my Little Son James is very Sick,
have been for some weeks in a Suffering way today he Look more like dieing than living what can I do, but to look & pray to God for

Suffering way died yesterday about 2 o'clock in the morning today about 9 o'clock I took my last look at the corpse of my Little Son, I

Today the Camp Meeting at the R. B. broke up. I have taken much trouble to fix a tent for my family to be at the Camp meeting &

than be to God for it…. Today Betsy & Sarah have join the Church

I have been for days directed have been a good deal troubled with worldly Sorrow my Daughter Betsy was marryed on the third day of
this Month, I have been fixing for her, the day before yesterday which was the 16th of the month she moved have gone about thirty
miles from me, my two Boys went with them to carry Carts they return Last night.

The exercises of my mind have been diverse O how I have Suffered in mind since this day last year my wife was afflicted almost a
year. She was taken Sick the fifth day of August last & died on the 23rd of this month now I am left like a lonesome Dove morning her

Jane E. Edwards April 30th 1846. We have been blessed with seven children three of which has died and we have consoled ourselves
with the hope that we shall meet them again.

but calling to mind the uncertainty of this Life and knowing it is appointed for man to die, Do therefore make and ordain this to be my

First I humbly recommend my immortal Soul into the Hands of my Heavenly Father my mortal Body to be buried in a plain Christian
like manner, and all my Worldly Estate I dispose off as follows, I lend unto my beloved Wife Betsey Ormond half my Land and

JOHN HARPER died in year --- having a will - in the 5th clause he bequeathed to daughter ANN POPE the Negros Mary and Taney --
- the latter is dead and Mary has several children. The bequest was to ANN POPE for her life then to her children. After death of
HARPER, ANN md DAVID SCARBOROUGH by whom she had one child, IRA ?? SCARBOROUGH. MRS. SCARBOROUGH is
still in possession of the slaves. The injunction granted in this case is a special one - ANN attempted to sell in Sept 1851 - an absolute
estate in slaves, Mary, West and Ellen (latter 2 children of Mary) to EDWIN G. SPEIGHT who was fixing to move out of state. PLF
told SPEIGHT about the will and ANN denied trying to sell them; SPEIGHT decided to buy
and risk the title. ANN says her children not entitled to slaves. OWEN W. JONES married one of ANN'S daughters - JONES also
wanted slaves sold and wanted his share of money.
JOHN POPE was born on 16 January 1779 (Ibid.). He married Nancy How Speight, daughter of Rev. Seth Speight and Elizabeth

JAMES ALBRITTON was born in Pitt or Greene County, North Carolina, on 5 June 1804 (Ibid.). He married Sarah Rouse,
daughter of Henry Rouse and Penelope (Rouse), on 4 January 1825 (Ibid.). James died on 4 February 1882 in Greene County, North
Carolina, at age 77 (Ibid.). His body was interred in Greene County, North Carolina, in Albritton Cemetery. This family was active in
the Hookerton Christian Church. In the old church records located at Barton College are the following laymen in the 1800's - William
Ormond, James T. Albritton, Elias Albritton, Thomas Taylor. Attending members in 1864 were James Albritton Elias and Erastus,
Thomas, Peggy, Emilyn and Patty Albritton, One of the memorial windows in is memory of John Erastus Albritton. Adelaide grew up
in the Disciples of Christ Church and remained with that denomination after her marriage to Levi Mewborn, who attended St. Marys
Epsicopal Church.

he handmade and gave to his brother-in-law, Levi Alexander Mewborn.

I have found thru the National Archives the following data on Hardy Ormond of Greene Co., N.C., born June
15, 1819. He enrolled for local service July 14, 1863 in the Confederate Service at Kinston, N.C. He served
in Capt. Croom's Company N. Carolina Local Defense, Kinston Guards. Kinston Provost Guard. This was a group from Greene and

In Memoriam
Cornelia Mary ORMOND was born in Greene County, N.C. August 21, 1847; and died at the home of
her niece, Mrs. H. L. WILKERSON, near Willow Springs, Wake County, November 8, 1928.
At the age of 14 she joined Ormond's Chapel Methodist Church and was a consistent member until her
death. For the past ten years her membership has been with Fuquay Springs Methodist Church.
On May 17, 1866, she was married to J. H. C. TAYLOR. Though she had no children of her own she
was a foster mother to two-orphaned children-Addie M. EDWARDS
(Mrs. H. L. WILKERSON) and Willie T. ORMOND of Norfolk, Va.
Mrs. TAYLOR was a faithful and loving wife and mother, devoted to the best interests of her family
and community. She was always present at her church service when it was possible to be there. For the
past two years sickness has kept her away. Her patience and cheerfulness during her long illness was
noticed by all who visited her and it was a benediction to be with her.
She was the founder of Union Chapel Sunday School, near Hookerton, and acted as
superintendent for several years. She also served as president of the Hookerton Woman's
Missionary Society. Since Mrs. TAYLOR has been a member of the Fuquay Springs Woman's
Missionary Society she has been an example in faithfulness to her obligations as a member. Not being
able to attend she would often write a letter of a beautifully worded prayer to be read at the meetings
and we realized that she was with us in spirit.
We shall miss these testimonies of her abiding love and of her faithfulness to the Great
Commission of our Saviour to "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature."
We extend to her loved ones our deep love and sympathy and commend them to Christ the
Comforter.

Since all the papers were Ormond, I suspect this was addressed to Thomas C.Ormond son of Watkins
Ormond and Betsy Edwards Ormond. In the letter J.W. Hall also speaks about Uncle John (Thomas
Ormond's brother?) and sends his best to Aunt Margaret(Thomas Ormond's wife was named
Margaret). He asked for prayers for himself and Sam. (his brother?) I
checked the rosters for the 6th Alabama Reg. whch was from Henry Co., Ala. In Co. A there was a
James W. Hall and a Samuel J. Hall.
In Co. M there were four Hall brothers: John W. (died 1862 in Richmond), Samuel A. ( died 1862 at
Sharpsburg), Lewis M. (died of Typhoid at Richmond in 1862) and Abram who survived the war.
These four from Co. M were sons of William
Hall and Caroline "Callie" Nelson "b. Georgia or NC". I don't know which J.W. the letter is from, but I
would lean toward the two from Co. A....it seems like if he had 3 brothers, he would ask for prayers for
all four of them, not just himself and Sam. Anyway, I don't know how to identify the letter for the post
except to say it was written by J.W. Hall of Henry
County, Ala. to his Uncle Thomas (probably Ormond) of Greene Co., NC. Any way, here is the letter.

Dear Uncle Thomas,
I have been thinking for several days I would write to you but for the want of an opportunity could
not do it. Therefore I hope you will excuse me for not writing sooner. I have been expecting to get
some letters for the last 8 or 10 days from North Carolina but have now got hopes I will in a few days
as I have written some there that I am more than anxious to hear from.I
wrote to Uncle John sometime since and to my Spicy, also at Carolina Seminary. I want you to ask him
if you should get this if they reached their destination (Carolina Seminary). I make this request of you
because the mails are so irregular and when you write to me please let me know. I wrote to him about
them but received only one or two letters from him since I have
been in the army, and I think I got both of them before I wrote my Spicy. I am growing very impatient.
Am fearful that I shall not hear from her soon. The War is interfering with my arrangements in that
particular very much. Uncle John I suppose will tell you who my Spicy is, but I will have to keep you
in suspense for the present. We have been in service about two months,
the time has passed away rapidly with me, but just to look ahead and think that I have ten months to
spend in Wars yet seems to me like a long time. I have not enjoyed myself so well since I have been in
service as I did when I was in the Old North State, and do not expect to see so much pleasure any more
until I take another trip to see you all. Can not tell when that will
be. If the War should close soon it will not be a great while. First if I should be spared and I hope I
will live to see the present troubles which are abroad in our land come to an end, I intend to settle
myself have my Spicy's name changed to Hall if I can and hope that the remainder of my days will be
the happiest part of my life. I fear that I have tired you with so much foolishness so I will branch off on
something else.I have no news at all but what you have heard before this. The Battles which were
fought near Manassas on the 18th and 21st of July our Regiment was not in either of them. The last
battle that was fought was said to be the longest that was fought in America. There are so many reports
about the number killed and
wounded on both sides, It is a hard matter to find out anything definite about it.Taking everything in
consideration I like soldiering very well, although it is anything but a decent occupation. We are faring
very well at this time. Some two weeks ago we had to take shelter in the forest

and crackers during the time. Sam and I are both well have been well all the time except for colds. We
are now in Camps about 4 miles from Manassas. This section of country is very mountainous and I
suppose from every appearance it must be healthy. We have as good water to drink as the Southern

and all about him when you write. Please answer this immediately as you have no idea how much
pleasure it affords me to receive a letter from the Old North State. Our company numbers about one
hundred at the present. Fifteen young men have joined us in the last two weeks. They came from
Henry County Ala. Do hope and trust the War will close soon. Dear Uncle hope you will not forget to
pray for the soldiers. I would ask you especially to send up your petitions for Sam and myself. Tell
Cousin W.T. Dixon I will write to him soon. Give my best love to all and especially Aunt Margaret.

Lenoir County, North Carolina,, (1993).). Rebecca died circa 1863. Egbert Rouse Rouse feels that Rebecca Phillips was the first wife
of John and I agree. We base this theory on the following data:
1. Will of William Phillip who calls James E. Harper my cousin
2. Stephen C. Phillips gave James E. Harper land for love and affection
3. Rebecca was listed with JEF on the 1860 census but Sidney was listed in 1870. Argent Phillips died in Greene Co and probably
lived with JEF and Rebecca who was her sister.
The two known children of John Elizabeth Fitzhugh 5 Harper and Rebecca Hart Phillips were as follows:

D. Carr Phillips and the scant evidence agrees with this.

by his aunt and uncle, John Jones and Betsy Ormond Edwards after his mother died when he was only four hours old.

Kilpatrick, daughter of the late Bryan Kilpatrick.). Levi died on 17 August 1903 in Kinston, Lenoir County, North Carolina, at age 73
(Levi Alexander Mewborn - William Pugh Family Bible.). His body was interred on 18 August 1903 in Kinston, Lenoir County,
North Carolina, in Maplewood Cemetery (Lenoir County, NC Cemetery Records, abstracted by Martha Mewborn Marble, Heritage
Place, LCC, Kinston, Lenoir County, North Carolina.). Levi was born on a Friday. According to a letter written by Joshua Mewborn in
1969, this Levi was called "Big Levi" by members of the family and his uncle was called "Rich Levi". A great grandson, Sam
Mewborn, said Levi and Adelaide lived on the Albritton farm near Hookerton in Greene County until her father's death at which time
the land was divided. They then moved to Stoneyton Creek in Lenoir County. At the same time some of the Kilpatricks, Graingers,
and Canadys who were neighbors in Greene County became neighbors in Lenoir County. It is not known why they all moved at the
same time and to the same place. Levi and Adelaide later moved to Kinston and lived at 207 Peyton Ave.
Levi served as a 2nd Jr. Lt. in Capt. Rountree's Company, Clark's Special Battn. where he appears on a Receipt Roll for pay from Jan
21 Feb 19 1862. Records at the U.S. Archives show he served the following dates: 1 July - 23 Sept 1862; Jan and Feb 1863; July and
Aug 1863; May and June 1863; and Sept Dec 1863. In May and June he was detailed to carry off horses. In Nov and Dec of 1863 he
was detailed to the Orange County Courthouse in Virginia. He was admitted to the General C.S.A. Hospital in Charlottesville, Va on
25 Dec 1863 and returned to duty on 30 Dec. His admissions card said he was admitted for Iwf. Fev. Quo. He appeared on a receipt
roll 2 Nov 1864 for clothing. He was promoted to Corporal 23 July 1864. During the rest of the Civil War he served with Capt.
Stephen B. Evans' Company of the Partisan Rangers, N.C. Volunteers also known as Co. B 5th N.C. Calvery. Information from
another Muster Roll reveals he was 6'1" and was born in Lenoir County and was aged 33 on 1 July 1867. According to some of the
records in the Archives, Levi was in two places at once.
One story has come down the family regarding this couple during the Civil War. It seems Levi was home on leave when Union
Soldiers arrived at his home and requested to come in. Levi had hidden in the attic and Adelaide met them at the door with a gun.
When they demanded to go into the house she threatened to shoot them. They must have believed her as they left without causing any
problems.
Levy attended St. Mary's Episcopal Church but Adelaide grew up in the Hookerton Christian Church and elected to remain with this
denomination after her marriage attending Gordon Street Christian Church. This was not the last time a Mewborn man in this branch
of the family attended St. Mary's and married a wife who was a member of the Disciples of Christ Church who refused to attend the
Episcopal Church.
Levi must have had some talent for furniture making as a couch has come down this family that was made by Levi. Having courted on
this couch, I can state that it is not very comfortable.
This compiler has a quilt Adelaide made probably in her later years as it is in perfect condition. The cousins, Connie and Peggy
Mewborn, gave it to me. Peggy Mewborn Briley has several old and used quilts Adelaide made given to her by LuLang Mewborn
MacKenzie.
From information in the JOHN TULL PAPERS - in the possession of Capt. Lee Edwards of Kinston, N.C. 1. Levi A. Mewborn owed
John Tull in 1862 - $10.80 for 1200 bricks and $2.00 for repairing a wagon 2. Levi A. Mewborn owed John Tull in 1866 - $23.06
for lumber 3. Levi A. Mewborn signed a promisory note to John Tull 1 Nov 1867 for $300
Both died at their home on Peyton Ave. and Levi was buried with Masonic honors. He was a member of St. John's Lodge having
become a member in 1852. A walking cane with the Masonic Emblem, a gift from his brother-in-law Alpheus Albritton, is in the
possession of his great grandaughter, Martha Mewborn Marble.
Levi and Adelaide had four sons and one daughter. Until recently, it was thought they only had three sons and indeed an old tin type
had the sons incorrectly identified for years.
OBIT: Kinston Free Press - MR. LEVI MEWBORN DEAD - Mr. L. A. Mewborn, Sr. died at his home on east Payton avenue this
morning at 4 o'clock. He has been ill for some time with a complication of diseases and his age militated against his recovery. Mr.
Mewborn was born in this county, near Institute, 74 years ago and has lived in the county since, for a long time past in Kinston. He was
a representative citizen and was generally loved for his genial good nature and was familiarly known as "Uncle Levy" by a wide circle
of intimate friends. For the past six months his health has been such that he was compelled to stay closely at his home. He was one of
the oldest members of St. John's Lodge, No. 4 A.F. & A. M. having become a member of the lodge in 1852 and will be buried with
Masonic honors tomorrow. Mr. Mewborn leaves a widow and three sons, Messrs. Will E., T. W., and Mark Mewborn and a host of
relatives in this city and county. The funeral will be conducted from his late residence at 207 east Peyton avenue tomorrow morning at
10 o'clock by Rev. J. H. Griffith, Jr. rector of St. Mary's Episcopal church, of which Mr. Mewborn was a member, assisted by Rev.
Edward Wooten, of Wilmington, chaplain of Mr. Mewborn's company in the Civil War.
Quite a large crowd attended the funeral of Mr. L. A. Mewborn this morning. The last rites were conducted by Rev. Edward Wooten,
of Wilmington. The Masonic ceremony was very impressively conducted by the members of St. John's Lodge, No.4.
NOTE: Egbert Rouse thought it was most interesting that the chaplain of his Civil War Company assisted at the funeral. I agree, but
have to admit, this tidbit had always flown over my head.
OBIT: Kinston Free Press - DEATH OF MRS. LEVI MEWBORN - Mrs. Adalaide Sarah Mewborn, relict of the late Levi Alexander
Mewborn, and mother of our townsmen, Wm. E., Thomas W., and Mark Mewborn passed at her home on Peyton avenue after a short
and painful illness of malarial fever and gastritis. Mrs. Mewborn was born in Greene county sixty-six years ago and was the daughter
of James and Margaret Albritton long time residents of Greene County. When but 20 years of age, August 6th 1861, she plighted her
troth to Mr. Levi Mewborn just as he had enlisted his services in the cause of the southland, and for forty odd years was not only the
true wife and helpmate, but a loving mother and constant companion to her children who cannot but rise up and call her blessed. Her
devotion to her boys as she so sweetly called them, was something beautiful, while in turn they ministered to her every want with that
consideration and love which only the true man can bestow. Mrs. Joshua T. Aldridge of this city is the only surviving sister. Mrs.
Mewborn was a consistent member of the Christian church. The funeral service was held this afternoon at 3 o'clock from her late
residence, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. P. B. Hall, and the remains interred in Maplewood cemetery.

Private Thomas W. Hart enlisted in Capt. Croom's Company, North
Carolina Local Defense, an unattached company, in Pitt County, North
Carolina in July of 1863 and began service on August 7, 1863. Upon
enlistment, Private Hart was 43 and a farmer in Greene County. Capt.
Croom's Company, known as Kinston Guards, was organized from Greene
and Lenoir Counties for local defense and special service and for
provost duty in the town of Kinston. The company performed a number
of duties locally and assisted with outfitting the CSS Neuse via
detached service.[1]

Information from William Ormond
L.T. Ormond went to Sumter Co. Ala. in April, 1856 to live with his uncle, Thomas Ormond. He attended local schools there in '56 &
'57. In 1858 he entered college in High Point, N.C. but returned to Alabama the following year to enroll in the Southern University in
Greensboro.
On May 26, 1861 he enlisted in Co. A, 5th. Ala. Infantry Battalion, C.S.A. under Cap't. Van deGraaff in Sumter County Ala. as a
Private. Mustered in at Lynchburg, Va. on June 23, 1861. Promoted to Sergeant on Jan. 23, 1863 by Cap't Stewart. Surrendered with
Gen'l. Lee at Appomattox.
Lemuel T. Ormond returned to Alabama after the war and for two years was in charge of Hamilton Hall of the Southern University. He
later farmed and operated a cotton gin in Sumter County. He moved to Madison County in 1900 and farmed there.
MARTHA ANN WILLIAMS was born in Livingston,, Alabama, on 20 September 1839 (Ibid.). Martha died on 31 March 1916 in
Maysville, Madison County, Alabama, at age 76 (Ibid.). Her body was interred in Maysville, Madison County, Alabama, in Shiloh

Thomas Fletcher Ormond was a graduate of Southern University at Greens-boro Ala. This school later
moved to Birmingham and became Birmingham Southern College.
T. F. Ormond and his cousin, Peyton Thomas, operated a school for boys in Huntsville. Ala. where he
met and married Eileen O'Neal. The school was not successful and he found employment in Selma on
June 13, 1904. Some- time prior to 1918 he moved to Birmingham where he was employed as Credit
Manager for the Batterton Coffee Co. until his death from Malaria Fever in 1932.

My direct ancestor was Wm. McCoy and Betsy Ormond's daughter Cordelia C. McCoy (b. 1827), who married Redden Richardson of
Craven Co. 1844, and moved to Alabama after his death at end of Civil War. She lived in Mobile, AL,
with her wealthy brother Franklin Jackson McCoy (b. 1831, married twice, many children, lots of squabbles over inheritances). Their
sister "Bessie" (Elizabeth, age 15 in 1850 Craven Co. census) married (unknown) and "moved
to Texas."
I have my line (Cordelia) and her brother's line (Franklin J.) but have absolutely nothing on Bessie or her descendants.

Sudden Death at Hookerton
Kinston, April 9th-Mrs. Addie DAIL, a prominent Greene County woman, 62 years of age died suddenly at Hookerton, Saturday
night. Heart trouble was the cause of death. She was a native of the Hookerton section and lived there all her life. The funeral took
place Sunday afternoon. The following are surviving children: Mrs. B. E? D. ALBRITTON, of Hookerton; Mrs. W. J.
RICHARDSON, of Raleigh; Mrs. L.L. HARDY of Maury; W. S. DAIL, of Greenville; J. C. DAIL of Kinston; and Dan and Claude
DAIL of Hookerton.
MACON EDWARD DAIL was born on 12 November 1847 (Ibid.). Macon died on 2 March 1915 in Greene County, North
Carolina, at age 67 (Ibid.). His body was interred in Greene County, North Carolina, in Dail - Ormond Cemetery. OBIT OF MACON

MR. MEKE DAIL DEAD
Mr. M. E. Dail a well known citizen of this county, died at his home in Ormonds Township Tuesday, March 2. He died of a
complication of diseases, being 67 years of age at the time of his death. He was buried Wednesday afternoon in the presence of a large
number of relatives and friends.
Mr. Dail is survived by his wife and seven children as follows: Messrs. J. C., W. S., D. L., and C. H. Dail and Mesdames B. F. D.
Albritton, W. J. Richardson and L L. Hardy.

Mr. Dail was a successful businessman and planter, amassing a snug fortune during his life. At one time he was prominent in the affairs
of the county, being a leader in politics. He held several positions of trust and honor, among them being that of county treasurer.

Mr. D. E. DAIL, Dead
August 6th, 1910
Mr. D. E. DAIL, eldest son of Mr. M. E. DAIL, of the Ormondsville section, died at his home
Saturday morning about 11 o'clock. Mr. DAIL had been in a low state of health for over a year; the
immediate cause of his death was an absess of the throat and lungs. He was 33 years old and is
survived by his wife and three children, mother, father, and several brothers, and sisters. He was buried
Sunday afternoon in the family burial grounds, and in the presence of a large number of sorrowing
friends and relatives.

DAIL
David E. DAIL, was born in Greene Co., N.C.; July 12, 1878, and died near Hookerton, N.C. August
6, 1910; aged 32 years and 24 days. Brother DAIL professed faith in Christ when young and
connected himself with the church at Ormond's Chapel, and lived a consistent member to the day of his
death. He was sick almost a year. Rheumatism was the dominant trouble, and during his suffering with
this disease, the appendix of the colon became involved, and he had to undergo an operation which so
exhausted his strength as to continue the decline of his health until death.
I visited Brother DAIL several times during his sickness, prayed and talked with him about his
spiritual state and always found him perfectly resigned to the will of God. A short time before he died
he told his faithful wife that he would soon be at rest, and it would be better than this world could give.
He seemed to be so humble and so patient under his affliction that it made me feel, while at prayer in
his room, that I was in the presence of the holy angels.
He leaves a wife and three little children, a father and mother, four brothers and three sisters to mourn
their loss.
