Martha was born on a Friday. The original tombstone for Patsy is missing
from the Kilpatrick Cemetery; however, the one for
Lewis is still there, but broken. New stones have been placed for both, but
the dates do not agree with other information. The dates
for Lewis are taken from his father's Bible which agree with the original
tombstone. The Bible give the spelling of his name as Lewis,
but he also used Louis. Lewis was a Mason, and a member of the Methodist
Church. There was an article on him in the Industrial
Issue of the Kinston Free Press, along with a picture that shows a beard almost
down to his waist. He was a highly respected member
of his community.

Ibid. Lewis died on 17 May 1906 in Lenoir or Craven County, North Carolina, at
age 87. His body was interred in Lenoir County,
North Carolina, in Kilpatrick Cemetery. Both our grandparents were in the Civil
War. They were young. Mama's father was 16. He
went in to take his father's place. Believe they were in what was called the
home guard. Mama was nine when her father died and
didn't remember too much about him. She did remember that he lost a finger but
didn't know how. After she was married and living in
Vanceboro she met a Mr. Bryan that knew her father. He could tell her a lot
about her father. He was in the battle when he lost his
finger. They didn't go out of state.

MEWBORN (

Alexander Mewborn - William Pugh Family Bible, in possession of Thomas Richard
Mewborn, Jr. and the Family Sheets in
possession of Martha Mewborn Marble.; Lemuel Hardy Mewborn Family Bible. He
married Mary Elizabeth Kilpatrick, daughter of
Bryan Kilpatrick and Elizabeth Burney, in Pitt County, North Carolina, on 4 May
1856; Levi Alexander Mewborn - William Pugh
Family Bible.;
The American Advocate, abstracted in the NCGJ, February 87 by Katherine K.
Walls
, Kinston, NC 29 May 1856 -
MARRIED - In Pitt County, on the 1st instant, Mr. Levi Mewborn of this county
to Miss Elizabeth Kilpatrick, daughter of the late
Bryan Kilpatrick. He married Adelaide Sarah Albritton, daughter of James
Albritton and Margaret (Peggy) Ormond, in Hookerton,
Greene County, North Carolina, on 6 August 1861; Levi Alexander Mewborn -
William Pugh Family Bible. Levi died on 17 August
1903 in Kinston, Lenoir County, North Carolina, at age 73; Ibid. His body was
interred on 18 August 1903 in Kinston, Lenoir County,
North Carolina, in Maplewood Cemetery; Lenoir County, NC Cemetery Records,
abstracted by Martha Mewborn Marble, Heritage
Place, LCC, Kinston, Lenoir County, North Carolina.
Levi was born on a Friday. According to a letter written by Joshua
Mewborn in 1969, this Levi was called "Big Levi" by members
of the family and his uncle was called "Rich Levi". A great
grandson, Sam Mewborn, said Levi and Adelaide lived on the Albritton
farm near Hookerton in Greene County until her father's death at which time the
land was divided. They then moved to Stoneyton
Creek in Lenoir County. At the same time some of the Kilpatricks, Graingers,
and Canadys who were neighbors in Greene County
became neighbors in Lenoir County. It is not known why they all moved at the
same time and to the same place. Levi and Adelaide
later moved to Kinston and lived at 207 Peyton Ave.
Levi served as a 2nd Jr. Lt. in Capt. Rountree's Company, Clark's Special
Battn. where he appears on a Receipt Roll for pay from Jan
21 Feb 19 1862. Records at the U.S. Archives show he served the following
dates: 1 July - 23 Sept 1862; Jan and Feb 1863; July and
Aug 1863; May and June 1863; and Sept Dec 1863. In May and June he was
detailed to carry off horses. In Nov and Dec of 1863 he
was detailed to the Orange County Courthouse in Virginia. He was admitted to
the General C.S.A. Hospital in Charlottesville, Va on
25 Dec 1863 and returned to duty on 30 Dec. His admissions card said he was
admitted for Iwf. Fev. Quo. He appeared on a receipt
roll 2 Nov 1864 for clothing. He was promoted to Corporal 23 July 1864.
During the rest of the Civil War he served with Capt.
Stephen B. Evans' Company of the Partisan Rangers, N.C. Volunteers also known
as Co. B 5th N.C. Calvery. Information from
another Muster Roll reveals he was 6'1" and was born in Lenoir County and
was aged 33 on 1 July 1867. According to some of the
records in the Archives, Levi was in two places at once.
One story has come down the family regarding this couple during the Civil War.
It seems Levi was home on leave when Union
Soldiers arrived at his home and requested to come in. Levi had hidden in the
attic and Adelaide met them at the door with a gun.
When they demanded to go into the house she threatened to shoot them. They
must have believed her as they left without causing any
problems.
Levy attended St. Mary's Episcopal Church but Adelaide grew up in the Hookerton
Christian Church and elected to remain with this
denomination after her marriage attending Gordon Street Christian Church. This
was not the last time a Mewborn man in this branch
of the family attended St. Mary's and married a wife who was a member of the
Disciples of Christ Church who refused to attend the
Episcopal Church.
Levi must have had some talent for furniture making as a couch has come down
this family that was made by Levi. Having courted on
this couch, I can state that it is not very comfortable.
This compiler has a quilt Adelaide made probably in her later years as it is in
perfect condition. The cousins, Connie and Peggy
Mewborn, gave it to me. Peggy Mewborn Briley has several old and used quilts
Adelaide made given to her by LuLang Mewborn
MacKenzie.
From information in the JOHN TULL PAPERS - in the possession of Capt. Lee
Edwards of Kinston, N.C. 1. Levi A. Mewborn owed
John Tull in 1862 - $10.80 for 1200 bricks and $2.00 for repairing a wagon 2.
Levi A. Mewborn owed John Tull in 1866 - $23.06
for lumber 3. Levi A. Mewborn signed a promisory note to John Tull 1 Nov
1867 for $300
Both died at their home on Peyton Ave. and Levi was buried with Masonic honors.
He was a member of St. John's Lodge having
become a member in 1852. A walking cane with the Masonic Emblem, a gift from
his brother-in-law Alpheus Albritton, is in the
possession of his great grandaughter, Martha Mewborn Marble.
Levi and Adelaide had four sons and one daughter. Until recently, it was
thought they only had three sons and indeed an old tin type
had the sons incorrectly identified for years.
OBIT: Kinston Free Press - MR. LEVI MEWBORN DEAD - Mr. L. A. Mewborn, Sr. died
at his home on east Payton avenue this
morning at 4 o'clock. He has been ill for some time with a complication of
diseases and his age militated against his recovery. Mr.
Mewborn was born in this county, near Institute, 74 years ago and has lived in
the county since, for a long time past in Kinston. He was
a representative citizen and was generally loved for his genial good nature and
was familiarly known as "Uncle Levy" by a wide circle
of intimate friends. For the past six months his health has been such that he
was compelled to stay closely at his home. He was one of
the oldest members of St. John's Lodge, No. 4 A.F. & A. M. having become a
member of the lodge in 1852 and will be buried with
Masonic honors tomorrow. Mr. Mewborn leaves a widow and three sons, Messrs.
Will E., T. W., and Mark Mewborn and a host of
relatives in this city and county. The funeral will be conducted from his late
residence at 207 east Peyton avenue tomorrow morning at
10 o'clock by Rev. J. H. Griffith, Jr. rector of St. Mary's Episcopal church,
of which Mr. Mewborn was a member, assisted by Rev.
Edward Wooten, of Wilmington, chaplain of Mr. Mewborn's company in the Civil
War.
Quite a large crowd attended the funeral of Mr. L. A. Mewborn this morning.
The last rites were conducted by Rev. Edward Wooten,
of Wilmington. The Masonic ceremony was very impressively conducted by the
members of St. John's Lodge, No.4.
NOTE: Egbert Rouse thought it was most interesting that the chaplain of his
Civil War Company assisted at the funeral. I agree, but
have to admit, this tidbit had always flown over my head.
OBIT: Kinston Free Press - DEATH OF MRS. LEVI MEWBORN - Mrs. Adalaide Sarah
Mewborn, relict of the late Levi Alexander
Mewborn, and mother of our townsmen, Wm. E., Thomas W., and Mark Mewborn passed
at her home on Peyton avenue after a short
and painful illness of malarial fever and gastritis. Mrs. Mewborn was born in
Greene county sixty-six years ago and was the daughter
of James and Margaret Albritton long time residents of Greene County. When but
20 years of age, August 6th 1861, she plighted her
troth to Mr. Levi Mewborn just as he had enlisted his services in the cause of
the southland, and for forty odd years was not only the
true wife and helpmate, but a loving mother and constant companion to her
children who cannot but rise up and call her blessed. Her
devotion to her boys as she so sweetly called them, was something beautiful,
while in turn they ministered to her every want with that
consideration and love which only the true man can bestow. Mrs. Joshua T.
Aldridge of this city is the only surviving sister. Mrs.
Mewborn was a consistent member of the Christian church. The funeral service
was held this afternoon at 3 o'clock from her late
residence, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. P. B. Hall, and the remains
interred in Maplewood cemetery.

Lemuel was born on a Monday. According to the 1860 Pitt County Census,
Lemuel could have been married twice as the only adult
female listed in the 1860 Census was Susan, not Louisa. Susan's age was the
same as Louisa's. The name Bryan is definitely a
Kilpatrick name and Lemuel Bryan was born in 1859. I suspect the Census Taker
wrote the name down wrong.
Lemuel served in the Civil War in the 4th Comp., Comp. E, 41 lst Reg.

Mustered in as a private and appointed corporal Nov -

Priscilla Moye, in Langs Crossroads, Pitt County, North Carolina, on 26
December 1888; Ibid. He died on 17 September 1862 in
Sharpsburg,, Maryland; Estate of Benjamin Sutton, Settlement found in Lenoir Co

Benjamin Sutton, written 13 August 1863, probated September 1864, copy found in
Wayne County, NC. William died on 28
November 1930 in Kinston, Lenoir County, North Carolina, at age 68; Death
Certificate Lenoir County Courthouse, Kinston, Lenoir
County, North Carolina. His body was interred in Kinston, Lenoir County, North
Carolina, in Maplewood Cemetery.
Will attended UNC.
Will taught school in Pitt County and after his marriage moved to Kinston where
he was in the insurance business. It is a well known
fact in the family that William Lang was less than pleased with his daughter's
choice of husbands - he was a Mewborn and a member of
the Episcopal Church. William elected to stay in his barn and shuck corn
during the wedding which was held at his home. They built a
lovely home at 205 West Washington Street which has since been torn down. The
lumber in the home came from the Lang farm
outside of Farmville. Will was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Hookerton, NC.
His Masonic sword belongs to his great grandson,
Ronald Earl Mewborn, III. Will was confirmed in the Protestant Episcopal
Church by Bishop Lyman on 2 July 1882 and was an active
member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church. A silver receiving bason was given to
St. Mary's Church in Kinston by the children in honor
of William E. and Lula Lang Mewborn on 23 January 1949. It is my understanding
this bason is still in active use.
Lula graduated from what is today, Greensboro College, in Greensboro,NC. Both
the Mewborn and Lang families were great believers
in higher education, even for the women of the family. Members of the family
have a number of items that belonged to William and
Lula including several beautiful hand made bedspreads. Both William and Lula's
Autograph Books are in the possession of this
compiler, but will some day be placed at East Carolina in the family
collection. The entries are most interesting to read and some are
by family members and some by college classmates.
Lula was adored by her grandson, Sam Mewborn, and until the day he died, he
requested this compiler to make him a chocolate pie
using her receipe. LuLang also gave Sam Lula's china which he especially loved
and this compiler also has that set of china. The love
of both these things has been passed on down to my daughter.

OBIT: This was an additional article in The Free Press on Thursday, December
25, 1930 along with a picture. The sudden death of
Mr. William E. Mewborn removed from this community one of its finest and most
highly esteemed citizens and brought universal
sorrow to the people of Kinston. His unswerving integrity and his kindly
spirit of good will for all with whom he came into contact
had won for this splendid Christian gentleman a place of honor and affection in
the hearts of all throughout eastern North Carolina, as
well as in Kinston and Lenoir County. William E. Mewborn was regarded as one
of the very best citizens of our State. The late Mr.
Mewborn was born September 1, 1862 at Hookerton, N.C. From 1882 to 1884 he
attended the University of North Carolina. In 1888
he was married to Miss Lula Lang of Farmville N.C. The three sons and two
daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Mewborn have grown up in
Kinston and with their parents have contributed as one of the most highly
regarded families of our entire community. As a public
spirited citizen; as a devoted husband and father; and as a faithful
communicant of the Episcopal church, Mr. Mewborn has
consistently upheld the finest tradition of our christian civilization. In
early years of manhood, Mr. Mewborn was a school teacher - as
such he is affectionately remembered by many. Of late years, Mr. Mewborn had
been a great sufferer from rheumatism. In spite of
his suffering and his slight lameness which resulted, Mr. Mewborn was always
cheerful and kindly. He maintained his genial
disposition and never gave up to his afflictions. He kept on with his work,
when except for his fortitude, he might have surrendered.
With splendid cheerfulness and courage, Mr. Mewborn never gave up, but carried
on to the very end. "One who never turned his back
but marched breast forward. Never doubted clouds would break. Never dreamed
though right were worsted, wrong would triump.
Hold we fall to rise, are baffled to fight better. Sleep to Wake".
OBIT: The Mission Herald - published by the Episcopal Church of N. C. March
1931 - IN MEMORIAM - Mr. William E. Mewborn,
whose death occurred in Kinston, N.C. on the twenty-eighth of November last,
was for many years a faithful and devoted member of
St. Mary's Church, Kinston, a loyal and earnest son of the Diocese of East
Carolina, and throughout his entire life a most sincere and
consistent Churchman. In the recent passing into "Life Eternal" of
Mr. Mewborn, St. Mary's Parish and the Diocese sustained a great
loss; as did also the State of North Carolina, and the community of which he
was an honored citizen. Mr. Mewborn was born at
Hookerton, Greene County, North Carolina on September first, 1862. During the
years 1882 to 1885 he was a student at the
University of North Carolina. After leaving the University, Mr. Mewborn for
several years taught school. In 1888, he was married to
Miss Lula Lang. Three sons and two daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs.
Mewborn. For many years Mr. Mewborn and family have
made their home in Kinston; and have always been very closely identified with
St. Mary's Church. The passing of Mr. W. E. Mewborn
has brought real loss to both Church and State; and removed from the Diocese of
East Carolina one of our most devout and faithful
laymen. Mr. Mewborn is survived by his bereaved widow and children and also by
one brother, Mr. T. W. Mewborn. Always an
upright citizen of the highest type, and a loyal and devout communicant of the
Church, Mr. Mewborn will long be remembered by all
who knew him on account of this splendid Christian life, his unswerving
fortitude and cheerfulness, and his kindly, gentle spirit of
good will for all. "He being dead yet speaketh." William was
confirmed at age 19 in Kinston, Lenoir County, North Carolina, on 2 July
1882. Confirmed by Bishop Lyman in the Protestant Episcopal Church according
to a certificate in the possession of Martha Mewborn
Marble.

system for 37 years and was
loved by several generations of school children. She was the organist for
St. Mary's Episcopal Church.
She never married, but spent a lot of time with her nephews and great
nieces and nephews. This writer
remembers what a treat it was to spend the night with Aunt Carlotta
and to visit with her
downstairs housemate, Cousin Ruby Bruton. I gather that when she gave
instructions, which was fairly
often, she expected them to be followed without question and
immediately. My father called
me "Miss Carlotta" from time to time.

Miss Carlotta L. Mewborn, 68,
died Thursday night in a Burlington hospital. Funeral services will be
conducted from St. Mary's
Episcopal Church at 2:30 p.m. Saturday with burial to follow in
Maplewood Cemetery. Miss
Mewborn began her service in the Kinston public schools as a classroom
teacher under the tenure of the
late Supt. Kader R. Curtis. She moved into the office at his request and
served for seven years. She
stayed at the post for 18 years under Major William A. Graham and when
Supt. Jean P. Booth took over
in l945 she continued that service. She retired last January ending a
public education career
coverning more than 37 years. She went to Burlington some two weeks ago to
undergo abdominal surgery. She
apparently was recuperating steadily until Sunday when she suffered
a coronary occlusion. She
showed little signs of improvement prior to the fatal heart attack which
occurred about 8:15 p.m.
Thursday. Supt. Jean P. Booth noted Friday that her passing "leaves us all
with a deep sense of
loss". She maintained an abiding interest in all school activities until
the end.
"Her love for the schools
find everyone connected with them was an inspiration to us all", Booth
declared. She was educated at
St. Mary's Junior College and Columbia University. Miss Mewborn is
survived by a sister, Mrs.
Duncan McKenzie of Burlington and several nieces and nephews.

MISS CARLOTTA MEWBORN
On October 24th God called home
Miss Carlotta Mewborn, a most devoted and loyal member of Saint
Mary's Episcopal Church,
Kinston. "To live in the hearts we leave behind is not dying"
expresses the
sentiment of those who knew her
best. Miss Carlotta taught in Saint Mary's Church School, was
organist for a number of years
and at all times active in her Guild and the Woman's Auxiliary, giving
gladly and generously of her
service and means for the support of her Church.
The members of Saint
Mary's Woman Auxiliary extend to her family deepest sympathy and sincere
appreciation of a life well
spent. Those of us who knew Miss Carlotta may well profit by her example
of faithfulness and loyalty.
Truly it can be said that she was "faithful unto death" and just as
truly has
inherited her crown of
life."

Kinston. Ronald entered the Army during World War I, but within a
month of his enlistment, he was
given a medical discharge. They lived on Fairfield Ave, Vernon Ave,
and then built a lovely home on
Hwy 58 in Kinston. Ronald never lived in this house as he died the
day before they were to move.
This compiler spent most
of her time between the ages of 3 and 6 with her grandparents. Neither
were known to be overly fond of
children being very strick with their sons and sending them to
military school at a fairly
young age. By the time their first grandchild, a girl, arrived, that had
changed. I rather ruled the
roost. Although quite young when granddaddy died, I remember him well.
After he died, my grandmother
insisted my parents move in with her in the new house. Granny and I
had our own kitchen upstairs
and I spent most of my time with her, leaving my mother with one less
child to run after for the most
part. One disavantage to this situation was that I grew up closer to my
grandmother than to my mother
until after Granny died. She was also very fond of her great-
grandchildren. My sister lived
next door with her two children, and they were in and out of the big
house every day. After
grandmother had her stroke and was in a nursing home, my sister took the two
children to visit almost every
day and I understand it was the only time she ever smiled during her last
six months. Many people will
not allow their children to visit someone ill, but this simple action by
my sister brought great joy to
both the children and their great-grandmother as well as an introduction
to the lessons of life.

WEDDING WRITEUP- Free Press -
The following account of the marriage of William Mewborn, of
this city, and Miss Helen
Cannon, of New Bern, was taken from yesterday's New Bern Sun-Journal. It
will be of much interest here:
"A marriage of simple beauty and widespread interest was solemnized at
nine-thirty Thursday morning at
the home of the bride's parents. Mr. and Mrs. Lemuel Hooker
Cannon, on the Morehead City
highway near the city, when Miss Helen Lemuel Cannon became the
bride of William Levy Mewborn,
of Kinston. "The home was beautifully arranged for the occasion. In
the livingroom, where the
ceremony was performed in the presence of a number of relatives and
friends, there was an
improvised altar of ferns. On each side was a tall standard entwined with fern
and bearing white candles,
these being flanked with two large baskets of white chrysanthemums and
fern. At the opposite end of
the room, along with the mantel, were candelabra with numerous white
tapers and fern. White
chrysanthemums and fern were used elsewhere in the room, making a most
effective background for the
wedding. "The event was simple, the bride and bridegroom taking their
places quietly before the Rev.
Dr. Bartholomew F. Huske, of Kinston, former rector of Christ
Episcopal Church, this city,
who performed the ring ceremony. The bride was lovely in a brown
diagonal suede cloth suit with
a mink collar. She carried a brown muff with mink trim and her hat was
of diagonal suede with a fur
quill. Her accessories were of suede. The chic outfit was enhanced by a
shoulder corsage of Parma
violets. Mrs. Cannon, mother of the bride, wore an Evangeline model of
black tulip crepe, while Mrs.
Lula Lang Mewborn of Kinston, mother of the groom, was attired in
black romaine crepe. After the
ceremony the couple left by motor for a trip to an unannounced
destination. Upon their return
they will reside at Greenville. No announcements of the wedding are
being sent out. Mrs. Mewborn is
popular through the section, and has been accorded an unusually
large number of courtesies
during the pre-nutial period. She graduated at New Bern High School then
attended St. Mary's School,
Raleigh. Mr. Mewborn is the son of Mrs. Lula L. Mewborn and the late
William E. Mewborn, of Kinston.
He attended the University of North Carolina, where he was a
member of Sigma Chi fraternity.
At present, he is a member of the state highway patrol located
temporarily at Greenville. Here
from out of the city for the wedding were Mrs. Lula Mewborn, Miss
Carlotta Mewborn, Mrs. Mark
Mewborn, Thomas Mewborn, T. W. Mewborn, Mr. and Mrs. R. E.
Mewborn, Mrs. O. G Rucker, Miss

George B. Webb, was born in Kinston, July 8, 1855. He was educated in
the local schools of that day, and after finishing school he
applied himself to the acquirement of his father's knowledge of mechanics. In
1876 he entered business with his father, the Rev. J. B.
Webb. The father came to this town 54 years ago, in 1844, and commenced
building buggies in 1847 in the old court-house, on the
northwest corner of King and Independence streets, under the Masonic hall.
In 1878, after working with his father two years, Mr. George B. Webb,
sold out his interest in the business and until 1884, engaged
in engineering. He then bought out Mr. Thomas Williams, who had purchased Rev.
J. B. Webb's shops, and began again the business
and is still located at the same stand.
Mr. Webb is our only undertaker and owns two hearses, one being very
handsome. The healthfulness of Kinston is such that we
need no more. He is thoroughly posted in this department, have had years of
experience. In 1897 he took a special course in
embalming at the Champion College of Embalming in Baltimore, graduating from
that institution and receiving a diploma.
Mr. Webb is a natural mechanic. A knowledge of the intracacies of
mechanical powers and appliances so mysterious to the
ordinary mind, unfold themselves before him with little study. Mr. Webb
inherited his talent for mechanics and has increased it by
study. He has large constructive power, great observation and self-confidence,
all of which are necessary to success in this line. He is
well posted on many scientific subjects and loves experimental investigation.
He is the inventor and owner of Webb's Ice Shaver and Crusher, which is
the best and most complete machine of its kind on the
market. It fills all requirements of such a machine, and supplied a place that
but for its invention would be still unfilled. It is largely
used on cool drink counters for shaving or crushing ice. It is the result of
years of patient study and improvement and is a marvel in its
simplicity and perfection.
He was first married in 1878 to Miss Agnes Pittman, who died in 1882
leaving three children, two boys, Guy and Frank, and one
girl, Miss Eva.
In 1884, he married Miss Emma Pittman. They have two little girls, Agnes
and Carrie Lula.
They live on the corner of Queen and North Street.
Mr. Webb is a member of the Masons, Odd Fellows, Pythians, W. O. W.
fraternal orders and nearly all the insurance organizations
with lodges here.
In the spring of 1898, Mr. Webb was elected by the Democratic party as
Mayor of Kinston and was successively re-elected in
1899, 1900, 1901, and 1902.
Thus for four terms he served his fellow citizens as mayor and during
that period he devoted his time, energy and talents largely to
the service of the city. During his administration the graded school was
established and under his direction the first line of water pipe
was laid for a few blocks up Queen street and the service tank built at the old
electric light station. During this time Kinston was
preparing the way for better and larger things which were determined upon in
the spring of 1902 when bonds for public improvements
were authorized by popular vote.

OBIT:
Free Press - 14 Feb 1941 - Joseph C. Rasberry, 63, insurance man and farmer,
died at his home in North Kinston
Thursday night. He had been in declining health many months. He was known to
thousands of persons in Lenoir and Pitt counties.
He was a native of Pitt, but lived here at least 35 years. Survivors are a
widow, Mrs. Maggie Pittman Rasberry, and four sons, Robert
P., Howell P., Francis P., and Joseph C. Jr. The funeral will be held at 11 am
Saturday. The Rasberry residence on Park Avenue is one
of the most imposing dwellings in the section. It is on a hill. The grave and
lawn before it make it outstandingly attractive. Years ago
Mr. Rasberry became a large landowner. His holdings at his death approximated
5,000 acres. He maintained an insurance office on
Queen Street south of Caswell many years. Mr. Rasberry's death occurred about
9:45 o'clock. He had been reported in extremis some
hours earlier.
