3. William Hawkins

William Hawkins is found on the Beaufort County List of Taxables for the year 1764: "Hawkins, William 1 White Pole.

In 1790, William Hawkins was enumerated in the Onslow County Census. Onslow County is next door to Jones County. He is head of household with one other male 16 or older. He has two more males under sixteen. There are four females and 2 slaves. From this census, it appears that William and Rhoda have three sons and three daughers. They live next door to Stephen Hawkins, Ezeriah Hawkins, and several doors down from John Hawkins. Stephen and John appear to have young families, probably a wife and one son and daugher each. Stephen and John may be sons who died before William died and therefore, were not mentioned in his will. Ezeriah has four sons and three daughers. Other neighbors are Isaac Taylor, Francis Burne, and Joseph Mitton.

By 1800, William is counted in the Jones County census, living near or next door to William Hawkins, Jr., Major Hawkins, John Hawkins, and Jesse Hawkins. Other neighbors are Asa Metts, Abner Cox, Huggens Williams, Lewis Loftin, William Isler, John Giles, and Daniel Simmons. William and his wife are over 45 years old. They still have at home three sons between the ages of 10 and 15, and one son between 16 and 25. There are no daughters at home and no slaves.

Land records for William Hawkins can be found in the book "Records of Jones County 1779-1868, Vol. I by Zae Hargett Gwynn". This book can be found in the N. C. State Library, Raleigh, NC.

20. Major Hawkins

In Pierce's Register of North Carolina Revolutionary War Soldiers, page 342, 4,658 acres of land was granted to M... Hawkins, of the Wilmington District, for service in the militia. Maybe this is Major Hawkins.

In the 1800 Jones County census, Major Hawkins is living next door to William Hawkins, Jr. and the elder William Hawkins. Like William Jr., he is living alone and is 16 to 25 years old. Major may be a son of William Hawkins the elder even though he is not named in his will. Perhaps he died young.

21. William Hawkins , Jr.

In 1800, William Hawkins, Jr. is living in Jones County next door to the elder William. He is living alone and is 16 to 25 years old. He is most likely the son of William and must have died young since he is not mentioned in his father's will.

Beaufort County, May 3rd 1820, Henry Williams sells to Margaret Eborn a negro girl about 12 years old for $310.00. The bill of sale is witnesses by Sam Hawkins. In the same document, on May 5th, 1820, the same negro girl Hannah is sold to Margaret Eborn for $310.00 by Allen Girst. This bill of sale is also witnesses by Sam Hawkins. Henry and Allen probably jointly owned Hannah. The deed was executed in the August Term of Beaufort County Court, 1826. The deed was proven in court by Sam'l Hawkins.
