Descendants of Alexander Harper
Generation One
1. ALEXANDER1 HARPER was born circa 1725. He
married Margaret Kilpatrick, daughter of Alexander Kilpatrick and
Elizabeth Easley, in Craven County, North Carolina; Will of John
Kilpatrick, written 1760 Craven County, NC, Secretary of State
Papers, NC Archives, Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina.; Harper -

The above entries indicate that Alexander had a Will and a number
of outstanding requests for Land Patents. The Hooker entry
indicates a marriage between William Hooker and a daughter of
Alexander although it appears they had no children based on the
1819
Law Suit.
NC STAR - Sept 24 1819 - from records of Roger Kammerer - Greene
County Aug 1819 - Sarah Harper vs Francis Harper, J. Harper,
Hugh Harper, Alex Harper, Blaine Harper, Robert Harper, Caleb Spivey,
James Spivey, Alexander Spivey, Jesse Hart and wife Polly,
Ephraim Spivey, Elizabeth Spivey, Elijah Johnson and wife Elizabeth,
John Forkand and wife Susannah - last two couples from out of
state Francis,
William, Elizabeth Harper Johnston, and Robert are proven
children of Alexander although only Elizabeth and Robert are
proven children of Margaret. It had been speculated that Margaret
wife of Ephraim Spivey was also a daughter and this list of her
children can be proven from other sources.
William died between the 1816 Greene County Tax List and the 1820
Census. The above appears to be William's widow, Sarah,
requesting a dower from the estate and the heirs who would be the
children of Alexander. This gives us a list of children for
Alexander
and Margaret. Francis Hodges noted that most likely the sons were
named in order of birth and we know that Francis was the oldest,
William one of the oldest and Robert the youngest. The girls are
probably named in order also although Margaret may be younger
than Elizabeth.
MARGARET KILPATRICK. Margaret died in Dobbs County, North
Carolina.
The nine known children of Alexander1 Harper and Margaret
Kilpatrick were as follows:
|
|
2. |
i. |
FRANCIS2 HARPER was born circa 1748. |
|
|
3. |
ii. |
WILLIAM HARPER was born between 1748 and 1753 in Craven County, North Carolina; Dobbs |
From the census,
he appears to have been married but had no children that we are aware
of; however,
if Sarah in the
lawsuit was his widow, she has a number of children on the 1820
Census. They could
have been Williams or
someone elses but there is no older lady in the household. That
indicates a 2nd
wife and children
born after 1800 where then were no children in the household of
William.
William appears to be
on the 1816 Greene Tax List - I assume he is the one in Capt Hooker's
District
with 400 acres worth
$800 - 8 black poles - no white. There is another William on the Tax
List who is
not identified at
this time.

The David Hartsfield Bible indicates he was married two times -
once to Laney and once to Eleanor. Or maybe Laney was a nickname
for Eleanor as Francis Hodges stated.
ELEANOR (LANEY) WARD.
There is only one instance where Hugh's wife is named, and she is
called Elenor. Francis Hodges says that Laney is a nickname for
Eleanor. I have seen it written that she was a Ward, but don't know
the documentation.

Still speculation. Francis Marion Harper, Jr. stated his great
grandfather was Blaney Harper bc 1790. Married to Polly Hood. He
also
stated his maternal grandfather was Admiral Croom son of Lott who was
part of the Paletine group and that information is incorrect.
Although the family Bible gives James Madison's birthdate as 1812,
his stone gives 1809 and Census records backs that date. There
appears to be no other Blaney than the son of Alexander for a
candidate for this Blaney. This Blaney was right at 40 years old
when
James Madison was born. If this is correct, either he was an old man
when he married or he had another wife and maybe no children.
Ann, daughter of George Miller, who was married to a Harper in
1801 has not been identified.
This is the line of Francis Hodges and he is comfortable with this
Blaney being the son of Alexander and Margaret.
Blaney is on the 1816 Greene Tax List - Capt Hooker's District - 150
acres - $300 - 1 white pole. He was also on for the heirs of A.
Jones.
MARY (POLLY) HOOD was born in Dinwiddie County, Virginia,

ROBERT HARPER BIBLE AND LETTER - posted on the Greene County
Archives by Anna Branscome.
Letter from Edward Oscar McGowan, Jr. (1887-1968) to Leta McGowan
Hedgpeth (1876-1969), undated but probably written in the
1950s or early '60s. Scrawled in pencil, but still quite legible.
Dear Sister:-
Here is the family record of the Harper family you asked me to copy. I wish our ancestors, God rest their souls, had recorded deaths
and marriages it would certainly make things much clearer now. Perhaps they did record them and they have been lost or destroyed or
for all we know may be packed away in some old family trunk some where. Who knows? To try to make the record clearer, I have given each one of the persons recorded a number.
No (1) Robert Harper son of Alexander and Margaret his wife was your great-grandfather.
No 2 is Nancy his wife her name does not appear in the records again. Ann Harper is recorded in
No 3 as being the mother of the first child. Could it be that Nancy Harper recorded in No 2 as the wife of Robert died and Robert
married Ann? If this is true then why was grandmother McGowan named "Nancy" and why did she so frequently mention the Popes as
her kinsfolk? Pope was Nancy Harper's maiden name. [Of course the solution to this problem is that Ann and Nancy are the same
person-I'm not sure why this didn't occur to my great-grandfather, seeing as how his own granddaughter was named Anne after her
mother Nancy McGowan James.]
No 4 Reading Harper, grandmother's brother (I think) was her guardian after her father's death. She often spoke of Uncle Reading or
brother Reading and one of them was her guardian. I can't remember which. It could have been either of the two.
No 6 Lourainy Harper, Marsey's older sister, is the one Aunt Emma was named for though by the time she came along the spelling had
been changed to Laurainy. Marsey sometimes called Aunt Emma Reeney, which was probably a contraction of Lourainy. ["Marsey"
was the family nickname for their grandmother, Nancy Harper McGowan, see next.]
No 7 Nancy Harper is as you know our grandmother. She was the youngest child.
The name Robert Harper appears twice on the list. No (1) her father and No 4 her brother. Our Uncle Robert was probably named for
him, as was Robert Anderson our cousin named for our Uncle Robert. [A daughter of Nancy Harper McGowan married Isaac or Ike
Anderson; their child was this cousin Robert Anderson.]
No 8 is "Peggy daughter of Dina" is almost illegible. She was born 1825 one year before Marsey.
No 9 is just one word "Charity." [Looking closely at the original, this name is "Charry" rather than "Charity".] These two entries mean
nothing to me. Could it be that these were slaves? It seems to me I have heard Marsey speak of Dina and Charity as being among the
slaves in the family. I am not sure about this. Nor did I know that family slaves were
recorded in family bibles. Only given names being recorded might indicate that they were slaves. What do you think?
Wish I could get more out of this but I am afraid it's the best I can do. Am not shure you can read all this as I can't write legibly any
more. Suppose you copy it in your neat plain handwriting.

HARPER-POPE FAMILY BIBLE
Tucked into the McGowan family diary along with a cover letter
from my great-grandfather E.O. McGowan Jr. to his oldest sister
Leta
McGowan Hedgpeth, the Harper-Pope family "bible" is really only one
page and a fragment of another torn from the Family Records
section of a Bible. The pages are very worn and crumbled at the
egdes, and the "complete" page is in fact torn across
the middle fold and taped back together at some point (probably by my
great-grandfather?). The two taped sections
clearly match up. Originally the pages must have been 8 1/2 x 10 1/2
or a little smaller, with a decorative motif as a border: the
motif
resembles two acanthus leaves or pilasters separated by two rows of
four dots, sort of like :: :: , and there is a stylized sunburst A4
in
each corner. Each page is headed at the top with FAMILY RECORD and
MARRIAGES or BIRTHS or DEATHS, with a vertical line
dividing the page into two halves. All inscriptions are in the same
hand, I believe, and
written in black ink faded to brown but still clearly legible.
Page 1:
This page is numbered [677] at the top center, 86 at the
bottom left, and 4R at the bottom center; all numbering is outside
the motif
border.

According to Julia Moseley Combs, Rosanna's children, were
remembered in her brother's will. Hugh P. Harper died in 1838.
Rosey's
estate was settled on 10 May 1841 and John M. Patrick was named
guardian for her three minor children - Mary E., Elizabeth and
William J. Pope.
WILLIAM POPE was born circa 1780.
I think William Pope 's first wife was named Rebekah. There is a
Rebebekah Pope (born Feb. 1773 and died 6 Jan. 1828) buried in
the
Charles Edwards Burial Ground in Greene County.
The 1820 Prinited Census indicates that William was much younger. It
does support two wives and two sets of children. It is possible
that this is two different Williams.
If it is the same William, then the Census supports both Redding and
Samuel D. being his sons. The 1820 Census indicates two sons bc
1804 - 1810.
The 1830 Census supports both a son and daughter bc 1825-1830, one
male born 1800-1810, and William bc 1790-1800. Next door
was Samuel D. bc 1800 - 1810 with a young male in his household.

WILLIAM JOHN POPE, born 6 March 1830 in Greene County, North Carolina; married Emily |
Is this not right? Was there a Hugh Jr and a Hugh P. or were they
the same person? The Raleigh Register gives Hugh Jr married to
Gatsey Scarborough and Hugh P married to Marny Joiner. To add to the
speculation we are missing someone as according to the
newspaper, Hugh P.'s son Benjamin was born in 1844. On the Jury List
of 1842 - Hookerton District - William H. Harper was listed
for the heirs of H. P. Harper.
Julia says that Hugh P. Harper was the son of Hughey and Elinor
Ward. She also said Hugh P. had a Will and died in 1838 but I
have
not seen said will.
In the Greene estate Records is the following entry
#39 - HUGHEY P. HARPER - 1 June 1839 - Account with James Albritton,
administrator
#164 - BENJAMIN D. HARPER - minor of H. P. Harper - Feb 1841 -
guardian was William H. Harper - received money from negro

SAMUEL WILLIAM4 SCARBOROUGH was born in 1824 in Greene County, North Carolina. He |
Francis Hodges said it is well known in the family that Sarah
Arendall had a granddaughter, Huldah who married Bright Kennedy.
Since this William had that daughter, it can be assumed this William
was the son of Sarah.
On the 1850 census Rachel was in his household but it is fairly
certain she was not the mother of all his children. Since the stone
of
Noah H. states his mother was R. one can assume Rachel was the
mother. Rachel's first husband did not die until 1824 so she was
not
the mother of J.F.I. I originally placed Huldah as the daughter of
Rachel, but that may not the case. John B. (Gillard) Isler of
Jones
County had a Will written 1822 and probated in 1823 and named a
daughter Huldy Sutton. The abstract of the Will is on Jim Isler's
website. John was the son of Frederick Isler. Everything fits for
Huldy to be the first wife of William Sutton.
On the 1850 and 1860 Census there was a Mary Sutton in the household.
Given her age, I am going to assume she was the unmarried
sister, Polly.
His marriage to Rachel is proven by her father's estate records in
Greene County. His negroes were divided among his children
including Rachel Sutton wife of William Sutton. The estate settlement
was on 5 January 1843.

There is no proof that this Alexander was the son of Alexander II
but there is a little circumstantial. Both Edward and this
Alexander
had land on Back Swamp in Pitt County and Edward is a proven son of
Alexander II. For the time being, we are placing him here
subject to change.
I agree with you that Alexander (d.1846) and Edward were probably
brothers. I have tried to find when they acquired their land,
both
adj. to Nehemiah Garris in the Littlefield area of Pitt. Nehemiah
Garris was deeded his land by his father John Garris in 1823
(John
Garris bought it from Joseph Jackson (pat.) in 1822). The plat of
this parcel in Ronald Garris' book shows the
lower left corner abutting Alexander Harper. So Alexander Harper
acquired his parcel sometime prior to 1822. I could not find any
record of that in Elisons deed abstracts or Hofmann's Patents. Edward
Harper (Greene) purchased his land in 1815 from John Van
Pelt(Craven) and Jonathon Van Pelt(Craven), 302 1/2 acres for $850.
Adjacent to Thomas Joiner, Samuel
Wingate, Elisha Griffin and Allen Cannon. Former owners Joseph
Jackson (Pat.) and Lawry Van Pelt (from Elison). The Garris land
was bought from Joseph Jackson also, part of a patent. The South
boundary of the Garris land abutted Griffin Land , and the East
boundary abutted Cannon land.So Alexander's land was probably very
close to Edward's land since they both
were close to Nehemiah Garris.Nehemiah was born in 1790 in Dobbs Co.
(again from Ronald Garris's book) and Edward and
Alexander probably were, too. Greene Co. line is only about 3 miles
(as the crow flies) from this area of Pitt Co.

2. Alexander Harper died in Pitt Co. and had last will and testament proved in Pitt County Court. Blaney Harper duly qualified as one
of the executors.
3. Negro woman Mary and child Eveline left to Alexander Harper's wife Susan for her life with remainder to his children.
4. Children of said testator at his death: Oliver Harper, Francis G. Harper, Blaney Harper, Nancy Harper wife of Henry Wingate, and

5.The children last named Blaney Harper, Nancy Harper Wingate, and John Harper died afterwards intestate. Pitt County Court
administrations on the several estates were granted in full to your orator Henry Wingate.
6.Afterward, writings of Oliver and Francis Harper assigned all their estates in said slaves to your orator Henry Wingate.
7. Slaves were put in possession of Susan Harper. She sold and delivered said above and increase to John Cox to the intent that they be
carried out of state and disposed of beyond jurisdiction of this court. Cox in performance of such purpose sold said slaves to Walter
Hanrahan who knew the premises.
8. Said Cox knew at time of purchase the interest of orator and that Susan held slaves for her life only. Very small price paid to Susan,
little exceeding value of her life estate.
9. Susan quite old. Cox took slaves out of state, sold them to W.S. Hanrahan and they combining together now keep them concealed,
intending to defraud your orator of his estate in them.
10. To the end that Susan Harper, John Cox, and W.S. Hanrahan may appear next court term to answer orator's inquiry, and rights of

The plat shows parcel #1 abbutting Cabin Branch. No other location
points. I have two later deeds that pinpont the location of this
property.
Martha,
I was just looking for location in the Nehmiah Garris book (by Ronald
Garris). According to this book, Nehemiah Garris' father John
Garris bought 357 1/2 acres in Pitt Co in 1822 adjoining Elisha
Griffin, Sally Cannon, Alexander Harper. and Cullen Lathan. About
a
year after this he deeded it to Nehemiah Garris. This property was
described as being in the Littlefield
area of southeastern Pitt Co.
Littlefield is just a few miles south of Ayden, east of Hwy. 11. I
think St. John's Church is in that area or at least close to it. I
also think
you can turn left off Hwy 11 as you are going from Ayden to Kinston
at Hanrahan, and that will take you to Littlefield. It is not far
from Greene Co. I used to know all the roads around Ayden, but I'm
rusty on that now after being away so many years! I think it's
interesting that in 1822 , that property was next to Alexander
Harper's property. I guess Edward inherited it from his father
Alexander.
Maybe that will be in the two deeds referenced in Roger's Rough notes
re Alex. as Edward's father. I'll get them as soon as I can.

The Harpers seem to have had a rather well-developed political
consciousness.. James Madison Harper (b. 1809) was born the same
year James Madison became US president. What this may indicate is
that the Harpers were strongly pro-Federalist in their political
sympathies. Remember, the Federalist and anti-Federalist controversy
was rather hearted in Dobbs County, which is what contributed
to much of the violence that lead to the division of Dobbs into
Lenoir and Greene in 1791. "Francis Marion" is also a political
name,
as is "Zebulon Vance." And I have also seen a "Preston Brooks Harper"
(b. 1858) listed in some of the Harper Bible records which
you posted. (In case you have forgotten, Preston Brooks was the
congressman from South Carolina who in 1858 took his cane and
severely beat Charles Sumner, the abolitionist senator from
Massachusetts, on the floor of Congress). The SC legislature
presented
him with a gold-headed cane, which is preserved as a shrine somewhere
on the USC campus today.

Egbert Rouse Rouse feels that Rebecca Phillips was the first wife
of
John and I agree. We base this theory on the following data:
1. Will of William Phillip who calls James E. Harper my cousin
2. Stephen C. Phillips gave James E. Harper land for love and
affection
3. Rebecca was listed with JEF on the 1860 census but Sidney was
listed in 1870. Argent Phillips died in Greene Co and probably
lived with JEF and Rebecca who was her sister.

Note: James Marcus
Hodges was born February 14, 1862, in Falling Creek Township, Lenoir
County,
NC, and died in
Lenoir County on September 12, 1920. He was the oldest son of Simon
E. Hodges
(1832-1897) and
Persis Harper Hodges (1843-1908). He was educated at the Kinsey
Institute in
LaGrange and the
Univesity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and he studied medicine
at Belview
Hospital in New York.
He married first Emma Fields (1864-1916), by whom he was the father
of five
children, all named
below.
His second wife
was Julia Daly Hodges (1871-1943), the widow of his brother, Francis

Hodges, Sr.
(1865-1915).
The following
obituaries and tributes were taken from newspapers shortly after Dr.

them appear to have been published in Lenoir County.
Obituaries
Dr. J. M. Hodges Dead
Dr. J. M. Hodges,
well known in the southern section of this country, where for years
he enjoyed wide
popularity as a
physician, died at his home near LaGrange Sunday night, Sept. 12, of
idigestion. His
health had not been
robust for some years, owing to which he had retired from the active
practice of
medicine, and was
living on his farm. It was not realized by his family that he was
seriously ill, if
indeed he realized it
until late Sunday afternoon. He had been in his usual health,
complaining a little
Sunday morning of
indigestion. Late in the afternoon he grew worse, and after
administering such
remedies as he deemed
best, and getting little or no relief, Dr. Smithwick was called in.
All that could
be done to relieve
him was done, but about the hour of ten he gasped a few times and
peacefully
passed into the
beyond. He was interred in the family burial plot in the LaGrange
cemetery Monday
afternoon in the
presence of a large number of friends and relatives. Rev. Perry Case,
of Wilson, and
Rev. R. G. L.
Edwards, of LaGrange, the first of the Christian church and the
latter of the M. E.
Church, of which
latter church the deceased was a member, conducted the funeral
services. The floral
tributes were most
profuse, attesting the high esteem in which Dr. Hodges was held by is
friends and
neighbors.
He is survived by
his wife, three sons, Messsrs. Walker and Harry Hodges, of Belhaven,
Mr. Joe
Hodges, of LaGrange;
and two daughters, Mrs. Alonza Kennedy, of LaGrange, and Mrs.
John
McGoogan, of Raeford.
Dr. Hodges was twice married; his firsrt wife being a native of this
county,
Miss Emma Fields,
daughter of Mr. Henry Fields, a member of the well known Fields
family of the
With much
surprise and deep regret the community learned of the death of Dr. J.
M. Hodges,
which occurred (sic)
at his home four miles from town about ten thirty Sunday night.
Though he had
been slightly ailing
for a day or two, his death was entirely unexpected. The immediate
cause was
chronic indigestion.
He had not quite completed his fifty-ninth year.
Dr. Hodges was
one of the best known and best loved physicians of the county. For
more than
thirty years he had
practiced his profession, being located the whole while at La Grange.
He was a
personal friend to
all his patients, sympathetic and kind to all. About two years ago he
gave up active
practice and removed
to the country.
Dr. Hodges was
the son of the late Simon Hodges, a farmer with large holdings in
Falling Creek
township and widely
known for his sterling and manly qualities. Of this family, three
only survive,
Mess. Paul and Robert
Hodges and Mrs. Hugh Bryan. "Mark." As Dr. Hodges was familiarly
known,
received his school
education in the school of Prof. Joseph Kinsey, afterwards taking a
course in
medicine and locating
here.
Shortly after
beginning his practice, he was married to Miss Emma Fields. To them
were born
five children After
the death of his first wife, Dr. Hodges was married to Mrs. Julia
Hodgss.. His
oldest son, Walker,
is a successful civil engineer, now located in Belhaven. The second
son, Harry,
also lives there. One
daughter, the wife of Prof. J. E. McGoogan, lives at Raeford. His
other daughter
is Mrs. Alonzo
Kennedy of La Grange. The youngest son, Joe, a youth of seventeen, is
a student of
Trinity College.
The burial
services were held Monday afternoon in Fairview Cemetery and
conducted by Dr. .P.
B. Case and Rev. R.
G. L. Edwards. A large concourse of friends attended the service.
