1.) First I determine who is the Coffman/Kauffman ancestor who first to immigrate to PA.
2.) Then I count how many generations down the generation that left PA and add one more to include their children.
3.) Next, Display the Family sheet for my individual from step #1
4.) I select "View" and "Descendant Tree"
5.) Then I narrow down the number of generations displayed, by selecting "Contents" and "# of Generations to Show" and enter the number of generations that I calculated in step 2.
6.) The next step is to select "File" and "Copy/Export Individuals in Descendant Tree". Select a path to save the file and change "Save as type" option to GEDCOM(*.GED) found at the bottom of the list (by clicking the tiny triangle on the right end of the option box).
7.) Give your new file a name and click the "Save" button. This will display a window with several more options. If you change the top option from the default "FTM" to "FTW", the other options should as necessary. (GEDCOM version 5.5, Character set ANSI, indent records UNchecked and Abbreviate tags checked) Click the "OK" button. Your GEDCOM file should now be ready and waiting for you in the path that you saved it in.
You can send your GEDCOM file as an attachment to: imacoffman2@yahoo.com In the body of the e-mail message, you can let me know if the family you're sending is a "new" family or if it belongs as part of a family already started. You can also include notes regarding ships they were listed on. I'd also like to know if you'd like to have your name and email address posted as a researcher interested in being contacted by others researching the same family. If you have more information (about the family you are submitting) at your website you and you'd like to see a link from our site to your own Coffman/Kauffman page, you're welcome to include your web address in this email message. You're also encouraged to include any important footnotes regarding possible discrepancies. Sources used, are also appreciated if you'd like to share how you solved any misteries. As our trees begin to merge I expect descrepancies will become more and more apparent and documented sources will be given priority
If for some reason you can not create a GEDCOM file, we'd still like to include your PA Coffman roots but I'm afraid it means a bit more work on both our parts. You can create an ancestor list begining with the first Coffman to immigrate to PA but remember to number the generations as I've done below (in case the indentations are lost in transit). You are welcome to send your list as a text file attachment or just type it within an email message. Once I receive your information, I'll create a GEDCOM file for you and add it to our web site.
The numbers below represent the generation.
