Source: Kauffman, Charles Fahs, "A Genealogy and History of the auffman-Coffman Families of North America, 1584-1937," (York, Pa.: 1940), p. 1; The Mennonite Encyclopedia, V.2?, p. 156. Andrew Kauffman was the first of the Kauffmans to settle in North America. He was a Mennonite and fled from the Palantine and Switzerland because of religious persecution. He came from Friesenheim, in Oberamt of Newstadt, Palantine, where he is recorded as a Mennonite in 1716. Presumably he is Andreas Kaufman, the "hosenstriker," or trouser-knitter, mentioned at Steffisburg, Switzerland. He went to Friesenheim, or Frieze-cloth town, probably to work at his trade. He left Rotterdam, Holland, in the early part of June 1717, and he arrived in Philadelphia in September and located on 200 acres of land adjoining Isaac Kauffman on the west. This was part of the 5,000 acre blanket warrant granted to Hans Herr and Martin Kendig on Sept. 27, 1717. This 200-acre tract was surveyed on Saturday, May 31, 1718. Andrew appears on the tax list of 1718 for Conestoga Manor for 12 shillings. He was among those naturalized in 1727.
Andrew Kauffman's homestead is situated in the southwest corner of the road leading off the Lincoln Highway (US Route 6) toward Millersville, Pennsylvania. The Mennonite Church history states, "Kauffman (Kaufman, Kaufmann, Kauffmann, Coffman, Cauffman), a prolific Mennonite and Amish family, originating apparently in Steffisberg, canton of Bern, Switzerland. One of the early Mennonite setters in Lancaster Co., Pa., was Andrew Kauffman, who came in 1717 from Friesenheim, Palatinate, to which place he had earlier come from Steffisberg. . . . The direct immigration of Kauffmans from the Palatinate to America began with Isaac and Andrew Kauffman, who settled in Lancaster Co., Pa., in 1717. From this line came such leading figures in the Mennonite Church (MC) as David D. Kauffman (1827-96), first Mennonite bishop in Missouri (Versailles), a long-time bishop and editor of the Gospel Herald, living most of his active life at Scottdale, Pa. A branch of this Lancaster County line located early in western Virginia (Page Co.) where Michael Kauffman was the first Mennonite minister. Here the
name was changed to Coffman. Bishop Samuel Coffman (1822-94), his son J. S. Coffman (q.v., 1848-99), the noted evangelist of Elkhart, Ind., and the latter's son Bishop S. F. Coffman (q.v., 1872-1954) of Vineland, Ont., were noted bearers of this name. There were in 1955 in the Mennonite (MC) Church 25 ordained men bearing the name Kauffman."
