FREEMAN - Clifton-upon-Dunsmore, Warwickshire

My great-grandfather Charles FREEMAN (1815-1904) was a farmer in Clifton-upon-Dunsmore, Rugby, Warwickshire from around 1860 onwards. He married Elizabeth Johnson KENDALL (1847-1930) of Burbage, Leicestershire at Abbots Bromley, Staffordshire and had a large family of whom there a number of photographs. His exact date of birth has been difficult to prove, as he was inconsistent on census returns as to when and where he was born. In all I have 8 different years of birth (6 census, marriage & death notices). It would seem from a family will that his father was Thomas FREEMAN of Ratcliffe on the Wreake.

FREEMAN - Burbage & Ratcliffe on the Wreake, Leicestershire

Thomas FREEMAN

(father of the above) was also a farmer and lived in Burbage in the early part of the 1800's. He married Mary (maiden name unknown) around 1805 and had the following children: John, Mary, Susanna, Elizabeth, Phoebe, Jemima, Matthew and Charles (above). He died in 1840 in Ratcliffe-on-the-Wreake. My current task in hand is locating each of these children in the records. Once done, this section will be updated.

FREEMAN - Southwark, Surrey

There was also a branch of the FREEMAN family living in Southwark, Surrey/London, the family of John FREEMAN, Chemist & Druggist. John was the eldest son of Thomas FREEMAN (above).

John Arthur FREEMAN (1837-c.1872) followed in his father's footsteps and also became a Chemist. He was registered with the Pharmaceutical Society for the years 1869 to 1872. His business premises were at 49 Collingwood St., Blackfriars, Christ Church, Southwark and at 13 Blackfriars Road, Southwark. He married Hannah WALLER about whom I have no information. They had two sons, Arthur Alexander FREEMAN (b.1867) and John FREEMAN (b.1870). Both were Christened at Christ Church, Southwark as their father & uncles had been.

John married Mary Ann (1810 -?) of Greenwich (maiden name unknown). They were visiting John's widowed mother Mary in Leicestershire at the time of the 1851 Census. They were accompanied by only one of their sons, John Arthur FREEMAN (1837 - c.1872). It is a mystery as to where their other children were; Emily (b.1834), Thomas Turpin (b.1836), Alexander (b.1838), Algernon (b.1841) & Augustus (b.1843) did not appear to be in Leicestershire at any rate. Algernon later joined the 1st Surrey Rifle Volunteers and Alexander, the clergy (see below).

Alexander FREEMAN (1838-1897), born January 28th 1838, went on to attend Merchant Taylor's School in 1864, and attained a BA and MA and became a Fellow of St John's College, Cambridge. During his fellowship he was Deputy for Plumian Professor of Astronomy and Director of the Saturn Section of the British Astronomical Association. He married Eva PATERSON (1859-?), the French-born daughter of Colonel James Paterson (?-1861) and granddaughter of General Sir William Paterson. The Marriage took place at St Matthews, Porchester Gate, London. As a result of this marriage, Alexander had to vacate his fellowship and became Rector of Murston, Kent. He remained there until his death in 1897.
