A MAMMAW AND GRANDDADDY CHRISTMAS 'Twas a few weeks before Christmas, and all was a stir, as Mammaw and Granddaddy just announced, this is the day the tree will go up. Granddaddy his overalls and wading boots, all us kid bundled up. We Set out, all piled on the wooded trailer, being pulled by the green John Deer tractor. Down the dirt road over the branch and cross the railroad tracks we all did go. Not very far we pulled off the road to see our Granddaddy hop down with a glow. With AX in hand us Kids gather round to see which tree it would be. I suppose it was pre-chosen because when it came down it came down with such ease. After dragging and pulling he took great care to lay our newly cut tree so it wouldn't be flared. All back in our places, on the old wooden trailer, we couldn't wait to everyone faces. Down the dirt road, over the railroad tracks, over the branch, up to the door we stopped. Out came Mammaw looking all pleased. The corner on the porch had been cleaned just waiting for our tree to be seen. But first there must be a black bucket, broken blocks and bricks for Mammaw's tree; cause, well you know she wouldn't have it to lean. After measuring and trimming we were all ready, not with glitter and glitz, but handmade ornaments that Mammaw had made with every stitch. Cotton and big light bulb lights of orange, blue, red, and green hung on every branch, just as she pleased. Then came the popcorn and berries that we had strung together. Then the star and tinsel was in place just in an instant. As I lay in the iron bed that night, with many quilts, I watched that big beautiful tree's glowing. I lay dreaming that in just a few weeks, all the present that would fill that front porch, all the Aunts, Uncles, and Cousin's that would soon be there and Oh, the feast that would be prepared. At that time was when I saw that my Mammaw and Granddaddy was the happiest of all. Written By Patty Everett In Loving Memory Of Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Pitts |
