The Pace surname had two main points of origin: England and Italy. The Pace Society of America currently is composed of Paces mostly of English descent. Therefore this study will concentrate on Paces in the UK or of UK descent wherever they may live worldwide. IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO BE A PACE SOCIETY MEMBER TO PARTICIPATE.
While the Pace Society is very interested in the Italian Pace surname and the possibility of a connection perhaps somewhere in the Middle Ages, a DNA study would not be very valid for such a distant relationship. Italian Paces are encouraged to set up a separate study. The Project Director of this study will be glad to cooperate and provide a link.
The purpose of the study will be to determine possible relationships between different Pace family ines, with the following priorities:
Paces of German descent -- this poses a special problem. There is no German surname of Pace. However, there are Americans named Pace who are of German descent because their ancestors changed their name to Pace from Pass, Pees, or other similar sounding names. A DNA study would not show a relationship between these Paces and the English-descent Paces. However, some of these Paces are members of the Pace Society. If the German Paces would be interested, the Project Director will set up a special page for their DNA results.
