Descendants of William Pace, Sr.

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM7 PACE, SR. (GEORGE6, JOHN5, RICHARD4, GEORGE3, RICHARD2, RICHARD1) was born Abt. 1747 in Halifax Co, NC, and died 1845 in Montgomery Co., TN. He married SISLEY WALKER Abt. 1771 in North Carolina, daughter of WILLIAM WALKER.

 Notes for WILLIAM PACE, SR.:

William, age 90-100, is with son Hardy's family on 1840 Montgomery Co census.

The 1820 census index, pg 16 shows William Pace, Robertson Co., household had only one male over 45 and one female over 45. Apparently moved from North Carolina between abt 1789-90. William's will is dated 1829. Per Reed S. Pace, William was definitely born in North Carolina, about 1757.

R. Banning shows possible birthplace as Virginia and birth date as 1746. Will proven in Montgomery Co, 1845.

William was between 80 and 90 in the 1830 Robertson Co census, which confines his birth date to 1740 to 1750. Wife was not alive. Others in the household: 1 m 20-30, 1 f 30-40, 2 f 5-10, 1 f 10-15, plus 6 slaves.

Terry Pace shows the middle name of William Jr. and his father to be Richard. He said he saw William Sr. referred to as William Richard in some writings. Since the son is referred to as Jr., he should have the same middle name. He also thinks John's middle name is Richard . Have seen no evidence for this.

Terry Pace shows place of birth as Brandon Parish, Prince George Co, VA, but date ca 1756.

A Pace Society survey of all North Carolina county censuses of 1790 did not show this William.

Pace Society claimed he lived on Beaverdam Swamp near Cains Mill Swamp, owned by James Cain I, father of Ann Cain. No evidence has been found that he married Ann Cain or that any of his descendants had the middle name of Cain.

Birthdate of 1746-48 is probably correct - see Pace Soc Bulletins Vol I Pgs 322-327.

The Wm Pace of TN bought his land there in 1803 (per Shirley Graham) and probably arrived shortly before. Henning came there earlier than his father, abt. 1800.

Reed Pace in History of Benton Co said William was born in NC, as well as Henning .

William sold 101 acres "on the North of Tar River on the Great Branch" in Franklin Co, NC on 9/16/1794 to David Jarnegan (B. Howard pg 329). Sold 444 acres (adjacent location) to Henry G. Williams on 9/6/1802. See B. Howard, pg 119-120.

 Notes for SISLEY WALKER:

Bruce Howard has a completely different birth order for the children: Henning, Martha, Patience, William, Jr., Alsa (Alsey), Sarah, John, Hardy C., Dempsey, Gideon, Mary and Cally. Year of death is assuming she was the mother of all the children.

Children of WILLIAM PACE and SISLEY WALKER are:

Generation No. 2

2. GIDEON G.8 PACE (WILLIAM7, GEORGE6, JOHN5, RICHARD4, GEORGE3, RICHARD2, RICHARD1) was born 1775 in Halifax Co, NC, and died February 28, 1825 in Haywood Co, TN. He married MARTHA HUNT.

 Notes for GIDEON G. PACE:

Middle initial is from Terry Pace who shows 1784 birth date. Another source shows 1775.

Per Shirley Graham: Names listed on June 24, 1830 Texas Land Records for Gideon are probably his heirs : Town of Austin to Mr. S. F. Austin Impresario, James Robert Pace, William Carroll Pace minors over 14 years of age and Albert Gallation, Wesley Walker, Polly Jones, Dempsey Council, Mary Ann Elizabeth and Gideon P. Pace, minors under 14 years of the late Gideon Pace, request to be admitted... James R. Pace for himself and brothers and sisters....

Group supposed to have gone to Texas in 1828. The guardian of the orphaned children was William B. Dewees.

Children of GIDEON PACE and MARTHA HUNT are:

3. HENNING8 PACE (WILLIAM7, GEORGE6, JOHN5, RICHARD4, GEORGE3, RICHARD2, RICHARD1) was born 1776 in Halifax Co, North Carolina, and died October 18, 1835 in Benton Co, AR?. He married (1) MAHALY BROWN. He married (2) MARTHA BRADSHAW March 25, 1800 in Davidson Co, TN.

 Notes for HENNING PACE:

Original info was from Margery Bernards. Additional from Paulette Haynes. 1776 birth date and location is from Bennett Dickson. Per Reed S. Pace: Henning moved to Benton Co, AR in the early 1800's. Henning had at least 7 children. It is assumed that most of the children are from Martha Bradshaw.

Terry Pace shows 1776 birth date. Reed S. Pace in Historyof Benton Co, AR says his gg grandfather (Henning) had seven children. Mildred Riggs says he had a son named Frank or Franklin.

 Notes for MARTHA BRADSHAW:

Marital relation to Henning Pace is from Paulette Haynes. Age 50-60 on 1830 Haywood Co, TN census. Birthplace for Martha is from 1880 census record of McLennan Co, TX for Gideon G. Pace.

Marriage Notes for HENNING PACE and MARTHA BRADSHAW: Sistler - Early Middle TN Marriages Vol 1

Children of HENNING PACE and MARTHA BRADSHAW are:

4. WILLIAM8 PACE, JR. (WILLIAM7, GEORGE6, JOHN5, RICHARD4, GEORGE3, RICHARD2, RICHARD1) was born July 16, 1778 in Halifax Co, North Carolina, and died October 18, 1835 in Robertson Co, TN. He married MARTHA ANN SHAW January 29, 1805 in Robertson Co, TN, daughter of THOMAS SHAW and SARAH JACKSON.

Notes for WILLIAM PACE, JR.:

The 1820 Tennessee Census index shows on pg 16, William Pace, Robertson Co, household contained 1 male 26-45, 1 female 26-45, 2 m under 10, 2 f under 10, 2 f 10-16. 1830 census shows 1 m 50-60, 1 f 40-50, 1m 20-30, 1 f 20-30, 1 m 5-10, 1 m 10-15, 1 f under 5, 1 f 5-10, 1 f 10-15, 1 f 15-20.

William Jr. is buried in Montgomery Co, TN. Will was recorded in 1835, Robertson Co.

William fought in the War of 1812 in the 1st Regiment of Tennessee Mounted Men. He and his brother Dempsey enlisted on May 13, 1812. They were under the command of Col. Archer Cheatham in the "War with the Hostile Indians." Other brothers who participated in the War of 1812 were Alsey, Hardy, Gideon and John.

Martha is on 1850 Robertson Co census, age 67, James 20, Birchet MAXEY 13, NC T

 Notes for MARTHA ANN SHAW:

Info is from Terry Pace. Martha is on 1850 Robertson Co, TN census with son James. Ages 67, b NC, 20, b TN.

Children of WILLIAM PACE and MARTHA SHAW are:

5. ALSEY8 PACE (WILLIAM7, GEORGE6, JOHN5, RICHARD4, GEORGE3, RICHARD2, RICHARD1) was born 1781 in Halifax Co, NC, and died Abt. February 13, 1813 in Springfield, Robertson County, TN. He married SALLY ALICE STUMP August 17, 1808 in Davidson Co, TN, daughter of HANS STUMP and ANN SNAVELY.

 Notes for ALSEY PACE:

Alsey died in the War of 1812 per Terry Pace. According to Dina Werho, his sons were raised by Zenos Fox after Alsey's death. There appears to be a different Alsey Pace in Benton County, AR in the 1840's. According to Terry Pace Alsey's father did not move to Tennessee until after 1789 and before 1803. Zenos was a neighbor of Alsey's judging from the census.

Pace Society shows date of birth as 1774 and date of marriage as 12/13/1803..

Notes for SALLY ALICE STUMP: She may have been the granddaughter of Frederick Stump, the daughter of Frederick Stump, Jr.

Birth date may have been 1780 per R. Banning. Allice Reynolds shows the name as Sarah Alice Stump, born 1780.

Children of ALSEY PACE and SALLY STUMP are:

6. JOHN R.8 PACE (WILLIAM7, GEORGE6, JOHN5, RICHARD4, GEORGE3, RICHARD2, RICHARD1) was born 1785 in Franklin Co, NC, and died December 1859 in Montgomery Co, TN. He married SARAH HUNT Abt. 1817 in prob. Robertson Co, TN.

Notes for JOHN R. PACE:

Terry Pace shows 1780. Another source shows 1787. Middle name of Richard is from Terry Pace. Edna Z. Cabler says John was born abt 1785.

John applied for Bounty Land between 1851 to 1855 in Panola Co, TX. (per Edna Z. Cabler). John is not on 1840 or 1850 census for Montgomery or Robertson Co, TN. Was 26-45 on 1820 Montgomery Co census, 40-50 on 1830 Montgomery Co.

Possibly on 1840 Robertson Co, age 40-50 1 son 15-20, 2 dau <10, 2 dau 10-20, wife deceased.

 Notes for SARAH HUNT:

Sarah may have been a sister of Levi Hunt (Edna Z. Cabler.) Was 16-26 on 1820 Montgomery Co, TN census, 2 males under 10. Was 30-39 on 1830 Montgomery Co census. 2 m 10-14, 1 f <5, 1 f 5-9.

Child of JOHN PACE and SARAH HUNT is:

7. JOEL8 PACE (WILLIAM7, GEORGE6, JOHN5, RICHARD4, GEORGE3, RICHARD2, RICHARD1) was born 1786 in Franklin Co, NC, and died 1840 in Haywood Co, TN. He married MARY ? Bef. 1830.

 Notes for JOEL PACE:

Terry Pace shows dob as 1786. Another source shows 1770. I am using the 1786 dob because Terry has a record that Sarah (Sally) was their first born child. A will for a Joel Pace was recorded in Haywood Co, TN in 1840.

Birthplace is from Pace Society book, and is not certain. Per Shirley Graham, George was their only child. This may be incorrect per 1830 Haywood Co census: 2 m under 5, 1 m 10-15, 1 m 15-20, 2 m 20-30, 1 m 40-50, 1 f 5-10, 2 f 15-20, 1 f 30-40.

Notes for HARDY C. PACE, SR.:

A Hardy Pace arrived in TX in 1831, obtained a league and a labor, Jasper Co, Aug 1838 - from Shirley - land grant records. No evidence found for middle name of Cain.

1850 Montgomery Co census index shows children: William H., Hardy C [jr], Martha C., Nancy, Mary. Both parents born NC.

1830 Montg. Co census shows this Hardy C. Pace had 1 m <5 (Hardy Jr.), 2 m 5-9 (George W. + ?), 2 m 10-14 William H. + ?) and 2 m 15-19 (unknown). Also 1 f <10 (Martha). Hardy has 7 sons on 1840 Montg. Co census, 4 are 20-30. Age 60 on 1850 census.

Children of CALLY PACE and JAMES SHAW are:

10. MARY8 PACE (WILLIAM7, GEORGE6, JOHN5, RICHARD4, GEORGE3, RICHARD2, RICHARD1) was born 1797 in TN. She married DAVID MCGRAW.

 Notes for WILLIAM PACE:

Per Reed S. Pace: My great-great grandfather and his wife moved to Arkansas in the early 1800's. They had 10 children and moved to Texas before the 1860 Hill County census. William's four sons all fought for the Confederacy in Parson's Cavalry, Co. A. (per Clint Pace). Per Reed Pace - William was born in Spring of 1801.

The William R. Pace who is listed here as his son is apparently not the William R. Pace who was on the 1870 Benton Co, AR census. That William R. is a son of William Pace and Sarah Frazier and is the father of General L. Pace. The origin of that line is unknown.

On the other hand the Wm on the 1870 Benton Co is also on 1880 showing parents born in TN. The William whose parents were Wm and Sarah Frazier would have parents born in SC and NC or MS.

 Notes for NANCY:

Christopher was known by some of his descendants as "Uncle Kit"

According to Dina Woods Werho, after Alsey died Christopher and Edmund were raised by Zenos Fox. The 1820 Tennessee Census Index (Robertson Co.) pg 16, shows Zenas (note spelling) Fox's household consisted of one male and female over 45, 1 male 10-16, 1 m 18-26, whereas the boys should have been about 9 and 11. I need to check the actual census.

Christopher moved to Arkansas about 1835 and settled 3 miles south of Bentonville. He farmed there and at Sugar Creek. Several of his children served for the Confederacy in the Civil War. 1870 Benton Co census shows real estate: $4,000, personal property, $3,000.

This is probably the W. H. Pace on the 1850 Robertson Co, TN census - with spouse Mary A. 27, b TN, children: John age 5 b TN, William age 3 b TN. Per Pace Society was in Cheatham Co in 1860.

Source of information for this family is Edward M. Pace, grandson of Wm. McKendree Pace, via Miss Alice M. Lee, Route 1, Box 408, Fort Deposit, AL 36032. Marriage date for parents from Marriages of Robertson Co, TN, 1839-1861, p 35.

 Notes for GEORGE WASHINGTON PACE:

Note from Mrs. Mehrkens to Shirley Graham, 3/74): A Mrs. Sampler was a daughter of George Pace of Clay County, KY, who was in turn the son of Hardy Cain Pace. Hardy was raised an orphan by his aunt, his mother having died and his father married again. His sons, Oliver... and William took active parts in the War of 1812, William especially distinguishing himself at the battle of New Orleans. After the war they returned to Tennessee and engaged in the occupation of farming. Oliver was born in the fort near Nashville, and was married in 1804, settling in Bedford County on a farm.
