Parading of the colours at the Pow Wow, STANDOFF, Alberta Jul.18,1998
FRED PACE joined the North West Mounted Police in 1873 at TORONTO, traveled to WINNEPEG (Fort Gary) via CHICAGO and eventually became a trading post merchant at STANDOFF, Alberta (North West Territories in those days) The surnames PACE, PEARSON, SQUIRE are associated with this area of southern Alberta. Fred was connected with the establishment of Standoff, as a centre for the Blood Reserve, largest reserve in Canada.
Standoff was a Mounted Police post in the early days, later moved a dozen miles south to Cardston.
WEBMASTER'S NOTE: OUR FIRST UK QUERY was from JAN ANDERSON of Staffordshire, England
Her query went unanswered for over a year, when Gordon Pace of Ontario, Canada, discovered it and found a relationship.
I have given that thread its own special page....Related queries follow.
Since then...much interesting information about Anglo-Canadian & American Paces has come to light.
THIS KIND OF EXCITING CONNECTION IS EXACTLY WHAT THE PACE PAGE IS DESIGNED FOR...!
GENERAL STUFF WILL BE PUT "UP FRONT" WITH MESSAGES AND QUERIES FOLLOWING
This is the beginning.
This query was on the Pace Network for over a year before there was a response.

EDWARD PACE, son of another EDWARD PACE b.1845,SAREDON, Staffordshire, and EMILY CULWICH ; they had 6 children. It's said EDWARD died young, a mining accident. There were children from another marriage, so as you can see, it will be no easy task to trace them.
One of my Fathers cousins was called CHARLES PACE and he emigrated to OTTAWA c. 1930
and married the daughter of either a jeweller or a goldsmith.
Sorry this isn't much, just birth certificates I have and family history, that has been passed on.
I will send you more as I get it.
I live in NORTHAMPTON now right in the middle of ENGLAND, I was born and brought up in STAFFORDSHIRE, virtually where my ancestors have lived for generations. My Mother is WELSH though so I have relatives all over, my parents and 2 of my sisters still live in Staffs. My son goes to a private school here, we have Public Schools as well but they are usually very old expensive private schools....Our records certainly back to the mid 19th century are excellent, before then, it was not necessary to register births and deaths so it is a bit hit and miss. -Jan
Jan shared some personal information in a later email.
I like for us to get to know each other, and besides, it's educational. Here it is:-
This is a response to my comment that I had heard the terms "public school" and "private school" had opposite meanings in England and here. I taught in a public school in the U.S. - Roy

Hi Gord,
Got your email address from the Pace web site.
My greatgrandfather was JOHN PACE born in NORTHUMBERLAND, England on Jan. 23, 1827. He and his wife,
GRACE MOORE Feb. 11, 1832, settled in Dumfries Township, Waterloo County of ONTARIO, Canada in 1853. They moved to Egremont and,Proton Townships in Grey County, and eventually in Stisted Township in Muskoka. Their children were Margaret, Robert, Jane, Frances, Elizabeth, John James, Agnes Nancy, Thomas, Frances Mary, and William Henry.
Do you have any knowledge of them? Would like to hear from you.

NOTE from WEBMASTER
Although I'm still somewhat in the dark as to how my grandfather CHARLES PACE 1871-1926, or his father EDWARD PACE b.1845 are related to the three PACE brothers, FRED, HENRY & SIDNEY) I've recently learned, from history sources in ALBERTA, that the person that took over the FRED PACE TRADING POST at STANDOFF, AB after the death of FRED, was none other than a man named PEARSON.
This happens to be the surname of a man that married a cousin of my grandad and emigrated from England to the Pittsburg area of Pennsylvania USA in the 1880's. Could it possibly be that this wasn't just a coincidence. At this time, all I know is that my grandad's ambition was: that when his family arrived in Canada, in the '20's he would leave Alberta and take them to the USA, where "the others" had gone. When he had died at LETHBRIDGE, Alberta...prior to them arriving in Canada, the location and just who "the others" were, was actually lost....None of the surviving members of CHARLES family, arriving from England seemed to know of this destination. I've asked this question, many times.
The similarities of Staffordshire, with it's abundance of coal, iron foundries and steel industries and the same attributes of the Pittsburg area of Pennsylvania USA plus the fact that Charles had relatives already recently emmigrated to that area of the USA lead me to reason that this was the area of the USA he probably had in mind.
That's all I can truthfully say, at this time.
Gord Pace.

Hello Gord,
A lot of information, but one step at a time.
To begin with, Joshua who married Hannah.
I have in my notes on "your" Joshua; in the 1841 census, age 35, and in the 1861 census aged 53....On 30 September, 1833 Joshua married Hannah HICKIN at Walsall. This would seem to tie nicely to a first child bapt. 6 August, 1834, and could be confirmed via a birth certificate for one of the later children. I believe he was the son of William PACE (married Mary BROWN in 1785??). William I think was the half brother of George, wife of Mary. Thus our common ancestor was probably Joseph PACE bapt. at Shareshill on 1 Feb, 1735 son of Joshua PASTE and Margaret MATHER.
Looks like we are probably from the same family of PACE from Saredon. My 3X great grandfather was Joshua PACE baptised at Bilston, Staffs. on 23 October, 1831. Joshua was the son of George PACE and Abigail BROWN who had married at Wolverhampton on 9 May, 1831. Although I do not have absolute proof, there is circumstantial evidence suggesting George was baptised on 8 October, 1809 at Shareshill, son of George PACE and Mary (probably COOPER).
Do you have enough information to either agree or disagree with my theories?
Great to hear from you. This all looks very promising.

Roy, the following may be of interest to someone checking out your page
and needing some information on these folks.
JAMES WILLIAM PACE m. SARAH ALICE BANNISTER in Center, Saguache Co.,
Colorado, and immigrated to Canada in 1902.
JAMES WILLIAM PACE was the son of THOMAS ROBERT PACE who came from
Kansas to Colorado in 1883, and brother to GERTRUDE who married SCOTT
ARMOUR. GERTRUDE and SCOTT were the parents of EDITH AND EUNICE.
Children of JAMES WILLIAM (WILL) PACE and SARAH ALICE (ALICE) PACE:
JAMES STANLEY PACE, PERCY LLEWELLYN PACE, DOROTHEA ELIZABETH PACE, AMY
ALICE PACE, MAROE PACE. MAROE was born in Calexico(?).
At least three of their children died in infancy and one was named
Britamarte/Britamonte. The family moved back to the U.S. around 1914 and
WILL and SARAH both died in Susanville California (1955 & 1956). The
family lived in Utah as well and I just noticed that both girls died as
children in California.
They farmed in south central Alberta (Nanton)

I had written some time ago requesting information specifically on my paternal grandfather WALTER JAMES PACE and so far nothing. So, perhaps I could make the inquiry more general and inquire after any Canadian Pace entries? Walter was probably born between 1985-1905. He married my grandmother WINIFRED JEAN (Jenny) SHANNON in PIAPOT, SASKACHEWAN around 1916. The only other thing I do know about him is that his mother's name was likely ORA MATHES and he lived in both MEDICINE HAT and CALGARY, ALBERTA until his death in 1956/1957. P.S. My web address has also changed since my last query . News...Through digging, BRENDA finds..name on death certificate for 'WALTER'....WALKER ELGIN PACE born 1894, Feb.25th GEORGETOWN, KENTUCKY, son of WILLIAM JAMES PACE.......Mother unknown (at present) howorkb@enr.gov.ab.ca (Brenda Howorko) She is looking for information on ORA MATHES or MATHEWS in KENTUCKY, GEORGIA, TENNESSEE web sites.

While on vacation in southern ALBERTA last July, I visited the PINCHER CREEK Museum and Kootenay Brown Historical Park. Farley Wuth, the curator, had some books there. One listed the obituary names from the Alberta newspapers, going back many decades. In it were two Pace obituaries. FREDERICK PACE of STANDOFF Alta., The Lethbridge News, Dec.15, 1898, page 1;....also The Macleod Gazette, Dec. 9, 1898, page 4.....HENRY PACE, LETHBRIDGE,
The Lethbridge News, March 23, 1899, page 1
My grandfather was CHARLES VICARAGE PACE 1871 - 1926 died at Lethbridge.too My grandfather was related to a Jones, conductor on the Canadian Pacific Railway, at MEDICINE HAT, Alberta, His wife was a PACE, don't know her name. Could be my grandfather's sister?... Son William joined North West Mounted Police...I have photos of them.
The Alberta Provincial Archives has the Lethbridge News on microfilm If this is any help, I have more info. Perhaps it would be useful to see the obituary, the surviving members of the family are usually mentioned, and go from there...

Hello Nancy,
My name is Gordon Thomas Pace,
PO Box 3066, Brighton, Ontario, Canada K0K1H0 (905 355-9942)
ANNA MARIA PACE, born at TIPTON, ENGLAND in 1865, That's about six to eight miles from PELSALL & CANNOCK in STAFFORDSHIRE where my great grandfather came from......Please take a look at the UK PACE QUERIES page, when you get a moment and the top of the other one that says 1997 queries.....I don't know who my great grandfather had for brothers and sisters, at this time, for sure, but I have a few related PACE people you'll see on Mr. Johnson's pages, that emmigrated over here, from England and they were pretty much of the same generation (age). I'm trying to fit them into my FamilyTreeMaker programme. I know there were more and some went to the USA, where my grandfather, CHARLES VICARAGE PACE 1871-1926 wanted to go.....
It's possible there's a connection between your great grandmother ANNA MARIA PACE b.1865 and my great grandfather EDWARD PACE.....They are both STAFFORDSHIRE PACES,....
She writes back: She was born April 25, 1865, the child of WILLIAM PACE and ELIZABETH HILL, do we have a match ?
(WILLIAM PACE may be brother to my gr.grandfather EDWARD and JOSHUA... I know "JOSH" to be brother of EMILY SQUIRE, & MARY ANN SQUIRE, (both nee PACE), and son of JOSHUA and HANNAH)....I'm working on it with my second cousins in ENGLAND, from Walsall, Cannock that I found through these PaceNetWork pages....GP (the family of Joshua Pace, parents & siblings is now at top of page)
NOTE of Sept.4,1998 - The Census of 1841 shows William Pace, son of Joshua/Hannah Pace
William and Edward would be brothers
I wrote:- in 1881 - Do the names of this family sound familiar to you: -
PACE, WILLIAM.. 41 born Shareshill, Staffordshire, England
PACE, MARY... 41 midwife born New Invention, Staffordshire...(SQUIRE family area)
PACE, ARTHUR..b.1863, Willenhall, Staffordshire
PACE, WILLIAM.. b.1864, Willenhall, Staffs.;
PACE, ANNE........ b.1865, Willenhall;
PACE, CHARLES.. b.1869, Willenhall;
PACE, MARY ANNE.. b.1872,.............;
PACE, FANNY.. b.1875, Shareshill
She writes back:- Looks like our family, thanks, Nancy
NOTE: It's possible ANNA MARIA'S sister MARY ANN, was the neice of the SQUIRE family, above
NOTE...After finally reviewing the elusive 1851 and 41 censuses, WILLIAM PACE shows up in the JOSHUA / HANNAH family...GP
In Canada...Henry Squire & Sons, Willenhall, Staffs. can openers have been a "standard" for generations

Dear Gordon , I appreciate your additional information. I located BRIGHTON, Ontario on the map. I worked in OTTAWA a few years ago constructing an addition to the OTTAWA CITIZEN NEWSPAPER plant. My grandfather DICK was born in NIAGARA FALLS, Ontario in 1870 and the family moved to NIAGARA FALLS,NY about 1883.
My great grandfather GEORGE EMERY moved from ENGLAND sometime and the first child was born in NELSON Township, HALTON County in 1870. The 1871 census shows a GEORGE EMERY in this county but the age is only 35 years instead of 42 or 43 years old.The code is 038 A 1 53 01. There is a GEORGE at the correct age in MIDDLESEX County, (ONTARIO) code 009 C 7 17 33. A JAMES of the correct age is listed in WENTWORTH County code 023 D 1 11 12. If I knew the wife and children of these people I could determine if they are the correct people.
Are the towns of CHIDHAM, RACKHAM, and ARUNDEL near BRIGHTON, England?... I have a couple of matches on the IGI files for the relatives in the SUSSEX County area. I appreciate all of your assistance
Bill dickinfl@southeast.net
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
< NOTE from Gord:.... ARUNDEL & RACKHAM are a stones throw apart, both about 10 miles west of BRIGHTON....CHIDHAM is on a channel peninsula, about 9 miles west of ARUNDEL, or 6 miles east of the famous naval center of PORTSMOUTH, and probably within sight of the ISLE of WIGHT, truly a mariner's paradise !
also WENTWORTH and HALTON counties of ONTARIO are where I grew up.

I've just got back from a week in British Columbia and found this great page you set up, Wow!
In BC, I attended the PROVINCIAL ARCHIVES, researching a WILLIAM JOHN PACE of VANCOUVER, BC, ....and EDMONTON, Alberta. b May 6,1866 USA, entered Can. 1870 (Can. census 1901) Brenda Howorko, (nee Pace) in Edmonton, is researching the same interesting man in his latter life. He was a commissioner of the CITY of EDMONTON.....Prior to that, a contractor with a Wm. TIERNEY of VANCOUVER, (formerly NEPEAN, Ontario) his father in law, who built roads in Vancouver, Seattle, Victoria.and conducted GOLD DIGGING PARTIES in the 1898 KLONDYKE 'rush'....Wm.J.PACE had given his occupation as 'railroad worker', CROWSNEST PASS (CPR thru the Rockies)....I had ancestors who worked on that project, he might be one.
If interested GOLD RUSH story, involving Paces, write for an e-mail printout......gordpace@eagle.ca

My maternal great granddad was FRED PACE in the 1800s. He ran a trading post in Standoff, Alberta approx. 40 miles west of Lethbridge, Alberta. Is it possible that this Fred Pace is related to you. Let me know.
Norman Bevis Manyfingers Calgary, Alberta norry@shaw.wave.ca
More on the Fred Pace. STANDOFF is a community on the northern part of the Blood Indian Reserve of Highway Two. The Blood Reserve is the biggest Reserve in Canada. Population is approx. 7,000 people. There is over 600 sq miles of Reserve. Basically Standoff, is a City Hall. Standoff was once a haven for Whiskey traders of the old west. It truly is amazing that Fred PACE came from England and made his way to Standoff and found a wife from the Blood Reserve. Fred and his wife have over two hundred decendents from the Blood Reserve. Fred's life was more that a success in more ways than one.
For interesting historical by Norman about FRED, his trading post and NWMPolice write gordpace@eagle.ca
I'll e-mail you an interesting printout

Hi! I'm quite new to this genealogy stuff, but noticed your site and checked it out. Perhaps you can give me tips on how to proceed. My grandmother was HELEN PACE, and she lived in MONTANA from (at least) 1940 to 1960 (particularly in HAVRE) She had a sister named JUANITA and another named Mary Zoe. She married a HOWARD BROTHERS in Havre. Her mother is ZOE PACE. If you can give me any tips on how to start this search, I'd appreciate it.

Hello Kristin,
I saw your query on the Pacenetwork about ZOE PACE, mother of HELEN PACE who Married HOWARD BROTHERS of Havre, Montana.
I'm looking for info on SIDNEY PACE who lived at GREAT FALLS, Montana back in the late 1800's. He had brothers FREDERICK PACE of STANDOFF, Alberta and HENRY PACE of LETHBRIDGE, Alberta.
GREAT FALLS, Montana. is south of Shelby, MT. Lethbridge, Standoff, Alberta. HAVRE, not far east of Shelby, MT ...the US/Canada border didn't fence much in, back then.
Perhaps ZOE PACE is a decendent of SIDNEY PACE. I have some history on Fred & Henry, nothing on Sidney except Henry's obituary says brother Sidney came from Great Falls. They were all related to my grandfather and came from England.
Thanks for your time,
Gord Pace PO Box 3066, BRIGHTON, Ontario, Canada K0K 1H0....e-mail:.. gordpace@eagle.ca Ph. 905 355-9942
Thanks for your email. I have just begun my search into my Pace family roots. I know my family lived in Fraid, Montana (it might be Froid... I got that from an obituary) for a time. I believe Zoe's maiden name was Grant. I need to get in touch with my family on other Paces... perhaps someone will know of Sidney. I am not sure that my family ventured into Canada, but you never know. I will keep your email on hand and if I learn anything, I will let you know.
Thanks!, Kristin
Perhaps the town was FERDIG, Montana....GP
"Telegrams were sent to his daughter, Mrs. Kitson, in St. Paul, and to his brother Sidney, in Great Falls. The latter arrived here on Tuesday night's train; and a telegram was received from his son-in-law in St. Paul, "
