TENNESSEE PACES

Special page for Pace - Woods - Stump - Haynes Family has many Tennessee connections
Descendents of William Pace (c. 1748-1829, Tennessee) and Ann Cain

DID RUTH LAMBERT EXIST?  Bruce Howard  can find no evidence that she did.  Go to Bob Pace's lineage page to see this interesting interchange. Or go to what seems to be the final answer below--her grandson says she did exist, and he should know.

Subject: Isaac Pace Descendants

I am a descendant of Isaac Pace, born 1798, GA, youngest son of William Pace-Ruth Lambert, and doing research on Isaac Pace and family. I am interested in forming a group of descendants of this Isaac Pace also doing research on his family. The objective is to work together to increase our knowledge of this family. If you are interested let me know. I will collect names and postal addresses so we can exchange information both ways. I look forward to hearing from interested parties. Regards. My PACE ancestor's name is MARGARET PACE. She was born about 1815 in Rutherford Co., Tennessee and married PEYTON CHRISTIAN in Rutherford Co. in 1833. Soon after, they moved to Warren Co., Tennessee where they remained. I have not as yet been able to definitively identify her parents. My "hunch" at this point is that she is a daughter of WILLIAM (b. 1773 North Carolina) and ISABELLA PACE who moved first to Georgia and then to Tennessee around 1805. This WILLIAM PACE is the son of WILLIAM PACE (b. c1750 North Carolina) and RUTH LAMBERT who along with all their other children moved to Tennessee. I am having difficulty locating any records that make any connection between my ancestor and the other Tennessee PACEs. So, I have resolved to trace all the descendents of WILLIAM PACE and RUTH LAMBERT in Tennessee and beyond. I've accummulated a great deal of US census records and some county court and marriage records. I would be very happy to exchange information with anyone coming across PACEs that had lived in Tennessee at any time.

here are some queries I would appreciate including in the home page.

1. ISAAC PACE b. 1798 in GA, m. RACHELL BAGETT, are listed in 1850 Perry county TN census. 1830 and 1840 census suggest he had an earlier wife. Anyone have any information on his first wife? Any information on the death of Isaac? When, where, where buried?

2. JOHN PACE b. 1832, son of Isaac, married Minerva Jane Batton, and had three children, WILLIAM WESLEY Apr 12, 1856-Sept. 20, 1935, MARTHA (NANCY) Apr 15, 1858-???,JEFFERSON JEREMIAH, Nov 19, 1961-Aug 15, 1935. Martha married a GUS BASS and moved to Kennett, MO. Martha and Gus had three children BILL, PARALEE who married FRIENDLY THOMAS, and HENRY. Also, I have information on an EGBERT BASS and a LAWRENCE BASS, who addressed WILLIAM WESLEY and his wife GEORGIA as Uncle and Aunt. Does anyone have any information on MARTHA PACE BASS and her family?

Sheila Jean Lynch,

Regarding your query on ANDREW PACE. I am from the southwest part of Humphreys County TN, just north of the Perry County line. I am a descendant of WILLIAM PACE (b. 1750) who migrated to Rutherford county from Georgia. His sons settled in Hickman, Perry and Humphreys Counties. Look on the Pace Home Page, Queries before 11/96 for information on my line and request for information. J. R. Cox is also researching this family and has a query there. Bruel Bowen is researching this family also and has a query.

I have some additional information on this family and would like to exchange information with you. My postal address is 404 Meadow View Drive, Huntsville, AL 35802-2426.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Bob

Bruel Bowen is also researching that same general line.  His ancestor JAMES PACE was killed in the Battle of New Orleans.  Click here for an interesting discussion with Bruce Howard about James Pace and that battle.

Roy, Here is a message I have sent to the following: "Bruel Bowen, bruelb(AT)msn.com; Hope Pace Frederick, ; John R. Cox, jrcoxdc(AT)aol.com; Ron Pace, pacers(AT)sisna.com; Shelia Hampton, BoneChaser(AT)aol.com, alias the Tennessee Paces. All are interested in the Tennessee Paces and most likely descendants of William Pace and Ruth Lambert. I will make every effort to send you a copy of our exchanges. Thanks for your help and continued support.

Subject: William Pace-Ruth Lambert Research

Roy Johnson, Webmaster for the Pace Home Page, has combined the queries into a topic called Tennessee Paces. While the title is rather encompassing most of the queries have come from those of us that are descendants of William Pace and Ruth Lambert, and all of us appear to be. All of us are interested and doing some research. I suggest we try to consolidate our efforts so we can be more productive. Maybe a start would be to share the top question(s), or areas of immediate interest that we each have. Let me know your thoughts on this.

Assuming a positive interest here are some questions I have. I know I am a direct descendant of William Pace (1750) through his youngest son Isaac and Isaac's wife Rachael Baggett. Census records suggest Isaac had an earlier wife. Does anyone have any information on that? My ggrandfather was John Pace, son of Isaac. I know nothing about John's brothers and sisters, except some names that appear in the 1850 and 1860 census records. Anyone have any additional information? Anyone know when William Pace and Ruth Lambert died and where they are buried? The 1830 census for Perry County, TN for Isaa? Pace shows a female between 70 and 80 years old. Could this be his mother living with him? With best regards. Bob Pace

To Bob Pace from Roy Johnson:

Good work, Bob!  This is the way the Pace Network should work!  If members will sort out the queries that relate to them, we can set up a series of "mini-networks" for research on specific lines of Paces.  Thanks for taking the initiative.  --Webmaster

I understand that Kinchen PACE, son of William PACE and Ruth LAMBERT, married a Nancy WILLIAMS. Might anyone have any information on Kinchen and Nancy, especially Nancy's line?

I am a descendent of this line. I have approximate dates and some actual places of births and deaths of the predecessors of WILLIAM PACE and RUTH LAMBERT, up to 3 generations. Someone asked for burial place of WILLIAM PACE, I have it as being Rutherford, TN.

My lineage is as follows, from WILLIAM PACE - JAMES PACE, SR - JAMES PACE JR. - MARTHA ELMINA PACE - WILLIAM WARNER PEARCE - FINLEY CARLYLE PEARCE, who is my grandfather. I have accurate info on the earlier lines, but would appreciate help in filling in the blanks. I'd be happy to help others if I can. Thank you!

8/5/99 from Gordon Pace at Pace-L

Dennis Pace at pace(AT)xpressweb.com has informed me of a new line of Paces which apparently has not appeared on any PACE website before.

This has to do with William Byram Pace b 1832 in Murfreesboro, TN, d 1907, Orem, UT. He was a ggrandson of William Pace of Franklin Co, NC (1750 - 1834) who married Ruth Lambert and is a grandson of James Pace, Sr. and Mary Ann Loving. Dennis is a descendant of William Byram Pace and has a copy of his autobiography. The siblings of William Byram are: James Finis Pace b 1834, Mary Ann Pace b 1835, Warren Sidney Pace b 1837, Martha Elmina Pace b 1840, Margaret Angeline Pace b 1842, John Ezra pace b 1845 and Amanda Lucinda Pace b 1850. The children of William Byram Pace by his first wife, Epsy Jane Williams, are: Martha Jane b 1853, William James b 1854, Byram Francis b 1855, Isabelle Lucinda b 1856, Zelmara Isadora b 1858, Epsy Albina b 1860, Sidney Alexander b 1862, Alice Eliza b 1864, Elisha b 1866, Eliza b 1866, John Henry b 1867, Carolina Williams b 1872, Franklin b 1875, Frankie b 1875.

It should be noted that there were two sets of twins in this family! According to Dennis, William also had 4 children by a second wife. I am hoping that at least one of our list members can find a connection to this lineage. Thanks Dennis for this information. Gordon W. Pace

One of the big revelations of Bruce Howard's new Pace book is the ancestry of the William Pace b abt 1750 who supposedly married Ruth Lambert and moved with his family to GA and then to Rutherford Co TN about 1810. This William Pace has probably thousands of known Pace descendants. He is the father of James Pace, Sr. b 1773 m. Mary Ann Loving who was the forefather of the Mormon branch of Paces.

Here is what the Pace Society had to say about William in Pace Society of America Bulletins Vol 1, c. 1998, pg 75: "This William Pace, who settled in Oglethorpe County GA in 1795, and whose sons settled in Clarke County on Shoal Creek, came from Franklin Co, NC. The Strickland family, related to the Paces through the marriage of Solomon Strickland to Amy Pace, also settled in Clarke County...We believe this William was a son of James Pace, who was the son of George Pace and his wife, Obedience. George was the son of John Pace I, brother of Richard Pace III. William had married a Ruth Lambert of Franklin County [NC]."

Bruce presents what appears to be good evidence that the actual lineage of this William Pace was as follows

3. Richard Pace II b 1636 m. Mary Baker
4. James Pace b 1670 m. Elizabeth Lowe
5. Richard Pace b abt 1690 m. Sarah Woodliefe m. abt 1710
6. Richard Pace b abt 1713 Prince George Co, VA m. Elizabeth m. abt 1743
7. William Pace b abt 1745 m. prob. Elizabeth (not Ruth Lambert).

Bruce says [on page 140] that there is absolutely no evidence that William's wife was named Lambert or even Ruth. An assertion that he had a daughter named Ruth he says has not been substantiated. Bruce believes his wife's name was Elizabeth, although he does not say why.

Melinda Strong (strong(AT)texas.net) posted a detailed record of this genealogy to the Pace mail list on 10/3

I have seen the Pace Society version of this genealogy repeated over and over again in many lineages (I may have even conveyed it to others), but it appears to me it is wrong and not supported by documentation. At any rate, it is an appropriate subject for further discussion.

Subject: [PACE-L] Pace/Lambert-Rutherford Co TN

There has been some controversy as to whether William Pace, Sr., b abt 1745 d. 1834 in Rutherford Co, TN, was married to Ruth Lambert. I obtained some info from the McCracken mail list which lends some credence to this. William Pace's son, John Pace was born in 1782 and married Sarah Anderson. They had two known children: Ruth Lambert Pace b abt 1811 and John Pace b 1812. John married Sarah McCracken (b. 1814) and they had a son, John Lambert Pace b. abt 1830. William Pace, Sr. had another son named William, Jr. b 1771. He had a son Bartley Pace b abt 1800 who is described in "Marion County Families 1811-1900" by the Marion County Historical Society. Bartley's son was William Carroll Pace b. 1827 and a son of William Carroll was Lambert Pace b abt 1851. I believe these three were named after William Sr's wife Ruth Lambert.

It would seem the following evidence lays the case to rest--there apparently WAS a Ruth Lambert:

In a message dated 5/13/01 4:53:03 PM Central Daylight Time, George Pace pace(AT)aros.net writes:

I had Removed Ruth Lambert From my Paf, because of Bruce's book. I just got a copy directly from the Church Temple records that show she was Baptized and confirmed on 10 Jan 1877. also My aunt Erma, My dads sister (Mrs. J. H. Peterson) supposedly helped find (or invent Ruth.) Because of this new print out I have, I now include Ruth As Williams wife and not Elizabeth. George F Pace >> pace(AT)aros.net

This followup is important:

Subject: Re: [PACE-L] Gen. W Byram Pace & Ruth Lambert

If anyone "invented" Ruth Lambert it was in 1877, by her grandson, James Pace, Jr. (b. 1811) son of James Pace and Mary Ann Loving. On Feb. 9, 1877, James Pace and his daughter Margaret Leonora Pace, went to the St. George, Utah, LDS (Mormon) Temple where they were proxies for a sealing (like a marriage) for his grandparents, William Pace and Ruth Lambert. As I believe he personally knew his grandparents from his early years in Tennessee, I accept his, James Pace's, version of who his grandparents were, until proven otherwise.

Here is the record posted by Melinda Strong:

Over the years, various other Strickland researchers have sent me
GEDCOMS showing the line of descent of AMY PACE as through Thomas and
Amy (Boykin?--hotly disputed) of Northampton County, NC.

I have recently read Bruce Howard's new book PACE OUR COLONIAL ANCESTORS
1619 TO 1799 (Quitman MISS/Printed by Express Printing, 1440 Old Square
Rd Jackson MS 39211, 1998)

He shows a different line of descent, providing detailed evidence. His
main argument boils down to the law in effect in which "all marriages
had to take place in the county residence of the female" and that the
Amy Pace whom wed Solomon Strickland was a daughter of Richard and
Elizabeth Pace of Edgecombe (later Nash county) North Carolina., and not
the daughter of Thomas and Amy Pace of Northhampton.

I'd be interested in any comments from the lists. Also, I have prepared
a line of descent for Amy based on this book, which is shown below:
