I know the PACE society is busy looking into all the questions concerning who married who and which story is accurate but my request is to know the names of all of SOLOMON/AMY STRICKLAND'S children. One story states there were about 15 of them. If this is true who are they. I have a lot of cousins out there somewhere. Let me know something.

I am a descendant of Amy Pace and Solomon Strickland. I have tried to answer some of the queries tonight in regard to her lineage back to Richard Pace and Isabella Smythe and aol can't deliver any of the e-mails for reasons unknown as one in particular was an aol address. I am trying now to determine the parentage of Amelia Boykin who married Thomas Pace. They were the parents of Amy Pace who m. Solomon Strickland, and I am working on my Magna Charta line through the Boykin's to Thomas Warren of Virginia. Do you have any idea as to the correct parentage? The dates given in the last Pace book are much earlier than the dates given in the Boykin book I have, and as that book lists Amy as Amelia Elizabeth, I think the Boykin book is off by at least one generation and the parents could not be William Boykin and Elizabeth Bryant of Kershaw Co. S. C. That Amelia Elizabeth was too young, and she is the one who married Nathaniel Pace, anyway, according to the Pace book. Can you help?

Carolyn W.Parkman P. O. Box 666, New Smyrna Beach, Fl. 32170 My telephone number is area code 904-428-8043.

Received the following from Carolyn on 5/10/98:

I am trying to clear up an error in the Strickland-Pace-Boykin line that has been accepted by various organizations as being correct when in fact it isn't. I have found no proof that Thomas Pace married Amelia Boykin. She is referred to in his will as Amy, and because they lived in the same area both families have assumed that she was Amelia Boykin. If she was a Boykin, I need proof of her parentage. Can anyone out there help with this. Also, the Boykin family has mistakenly identified Thomas Pace's wife as being Mildred Amelia, dau of William Boykin and Elizabeth Bryant of Kershaw Co. S. C. This is a mistake, as Mildred, as she is referred to in legal documents, was married to Nathaniel Pace, son of Thomas Pace and Amy?. I believe, but have no proof, that Amelia Boykin, who is supposed to have married Thomas Pace, may have been the daughter of Francis Boykin who also lived in Northampton Co. N. C. in the same time period. If anyone on the Pace network who is descended from this line can help, I would appreciate it.

Carolyn

Donia;

I received some more information from Lila Thompson in Oklahoma on the Pace connection. I thought you might want this information, so, I scanned it in and am attaching a text file of it. Joe, Linda and Opal Strickland

[Webmaster's note:  The following is from the book PACE FAMILY 1607-1750, compiled by Frieda Reed Turner, copyright 1993.  It is basically a compilation of materials from Pace Society bulletins.  It was intended for research and "pointers" only; much of the early Pace Society bulletins contained inaccuracies.  For example, in these excerpts, the Pace-Poythress connection is stated as a fact.  Information on that controversy elsewhere on the Pace Network indicates that the Poythress connection is almost certainly not accurate.  Use the info but be careful --Webmaster]

PACE FAMILY 1607-1750

THOMAS PACE

(Thomas of Urahaw Swamp)

The Thomas Paces of North Carolina, five by the name of Thomas in the eighteenth century, all descendants from Richard Pace II of Maycox. In Bulletin #22, December 1972 issue we learn that the first Thomas born 1706, died 1765, was the son of Richard II and his wife Rebecca Poythress [Note: Not proven and not likely; see the Pace-Poythress question as posted on the Pace Network --Webmaster] , and in 1735 Thomas Pace married Amelia (Amy) Boykin.

Born in Prince George County, Virginia about 1706, Thomas was brought down to the Three Creek area of southern Isle of Wight County, Virginia with his nine brothers and sisters when his father, Richard Pace II, took up land there about 1718. His oldest brother, Richard IV, crossed the state line into North Carolina, taking up a grant in March 1726. In May of the same year his father followed and through grants and purchases of land father and son established adjoining plantations on Urahaw Swamp in the eastern part of Bertie County.

Richard III died in 1736 and Thomas inherited two tracts of land, 320 acres and 290 acres from his father. Brother William was left only 190 acres which leads us to assume that Thomas was the older. Richard IV was left only the usual token sum of five shillings since he had ample land of his own. The larger tract, the "plantation" was left to Thomas subject to his mother's occupancy for the rest of her life. When Thomas first married Amy, they probably lived on his 290 acre plantation.

Thomas and Amy were married around 1735, in his Will he gives the name of his wife as Amy, and it is believed', that she was "Amelia Boykin" but do not have positive proof of her full name, but the Boykin family were neighbors in Isle of Wight County and when the Pace family moved to Bertie, County, some of the Boykins followed.

According to the will of Francis Boykin, his daughter married William Pace, a brother of Thomas, (Celia married William Pace), and we are unable to find another Amelia in the Boykin family.

The only date of birth available for this family is that of Nathaniel, younger son of Thomas, found in his Revolutionary War record gives date of birth as 1743. Thomas II, his sisters Celia, Amy and Frances all must have been older than Thomas. This Amy is probably the one who married Solomon Strickland in 1764, shortly after her father's death.

RICHARD PACE III

In 1753 Thomas I and Richard Moore served as executors: of the will of John Moore, husband of Tabitha Pace, sister of Thomas. The Moore and Bradford families intermarried with the Pace girls, Rebecca married John Bradford.

Around the middle of the century a strong trend toward resettlement on newly opened land south and west of Bertie-Northampton Counties is evident. The second generation in North Carolina was struggling with the worn out land of the old plantations. Thomas I (like his cousin George, the son of John I) sought land in Bute, later Franklin County to the west. In 1752 Thomas I bought from Joseph Bridges, 200 acres on both sides of Cedar Creek. In 1760 he obtained a grant of 347 acres adjoining the first tract. The same year he obtained another tract by grant which lay on both sides of Crooked Creek, but he sold it almost immediately to a Christopher Jones. All in all he had 547 acres in Bute.

Before Thomas I could sell out and leave Bertie County he died and his will is dated July 4, 1764. He left wife, Amy two slaves and a feather bed, pewter dishes and "the use of my manor plantation whereon I now live during her widowhood, and if she should remarry, then I give her the use of my plantation on Stone Hill in lieu of her dower."

To his daughters he left slaves and fifty pounds in money. To Thomas II he left the manor plantation subject to the widow's use (probably the 320-acre tract). To Nathaniel he left "my plantation where I formerly lived' which was probably the 290-acre tract, and to his youngest son, Richard, he left "my grist mill and plantation on both sides of Cedar Creek."

Nathaniel was made executor and Thomas appointed "my friend Blake, Overseer or Trustee to assist said executor, and see my will performed."

Nathaniel, born 1743, had just reached age 21 when his father's death placed this heavy responsibility on his shoulders. He needed advice from a more experienced man when he ran into trouble over the Bute County land.

Deed Book #2, Bute County records page 18, dated July 28, 1767: 28 July 1767 - Julius Nichols Esq., Sheriff to West Harris, both of Bute County, for 100 pounds proclamation money, highest bid at Sheriff's sale held 29 July pursuant to Court Order 1 March in the 7th year of the reign of our lord the King, for land sold to satisfy judgment awarded to James Dancy, (Dency) & Cullen Edwards, amounting to 37 pds. 10 sh. 8 d. procl. money plus fees and costs in suit against NATHANIEL PACE in which said Pace was convicted in Superior Court of Justice for the District of Halifax before Martin Howard, Esq., Chief Justice for the Province of N.C., sums to be had at next Superior Court for District of Halifax, at Court House in town of Halifax 1 Sept. next, so as to render to said. Dancy & Edwards the debt due them and their costs incident to suit. Julius Nichols, then and yet High Sheriff of Bute County-took execution 29th July and sold at public auction 547 acres in Bute County, belonging to THOMAS PACE, and in the hands of NATHANIEL PACE his executor, which said land included Mill belonging to said PACE and was contained in two tracts on both sides of Cedar Creek, the first tract being part of grant to Joseph Bridges 18 April 1745, and the 2nd, adjoining the first and adjoining Osborn Jeffreys, Jeremiah Perry and Joseph Bridges, granted Thomas Pace 5 July 1760.

No witnesses Ack.'by Julius Nichols Esq.

Sheriff Bute, October Court

Ben McCullick CC

Reg. 6 Feb. 1768 by Wm. Johnson P R

Nathaniel was sued as executor. The action was against only property of Thomas, Sr., which could be levied upon in Bute, where the debt must have been incurred. Poor 'Richard was thus deprived of his inheritance. The last bit f data we have on Thomas II is that contained in his father's will of 1764. No further record of him or his brother, Richard, (after the loss of his Bute County inheritance).
