1998 Pace Queries

Date:  98-12-14 From: rvrbel@power-net.net (Wanda Caszatt Smith)

I am trying to locate a JACK PACE. His home state was Oklahoma. I believe his mother was a full blood Blackfoot. He was married to a girl from Germany whose name was Ursela*. Ursela had a niece named Ingrid. Ingrid was married to my brother Richard. They had two sons. Ingrid left them when they were very young. Now as grown men (34 and 36) they would like to find their mother. They have their fathers blessing. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated. I have been into genealogy for the past twenty years and find it fascinating.Sincerely, Wanda Caszatt Smith

(*The German name is normally spelled Ursula - webmaster)

RE CHARLOTTE PACE /LUDBROOK LEE

Dear Mr. Johnson, I happened on the amazing Pace Network when I was searching for leads on some gggg-grandparents: CHARLOTTE PACE and LUDBROOK LEE. Charlotte Pace was born in 1763, place unknown, and died in 1845 in Lowndes Co., Alabama. She married Ludbrook Lee (c.1763-1802) of Edgefield District, SC. My Lee kin hold - in good faith - that CHARLOTTE PACE was a descendent of "GEORGE PACE, son of RICHARD, (who) married Samuel Maycock's daughter Sarah." But given the various Pace controversies, I am reluctant to assume anything about Charlotte Pace's ancestors and only get confused when I try to track them. Any suggestions or information would be very much appreciated. Thank you, PK Murphy e-mail: bi008@torfree.net mailing address: PO Box 175 Station E Toronto, Ontario M6H 4E1

In reply to query posted by P K Murphy:

There is a new book published by the Pace Society entitled Pace Society of America Bulletins, Volume I, compiled by Freda Turner, c 1998, which contains about eight pages discussing the genealogy of your CHARLOTTE PACE and LUDBROOK LEE. The information I have is that Charlotte is descended from Richard Pace of Jamestown as follows: Richard Pace (b abt 1585); George Pace, 1609; Richard Pace II (1638); Richard Pace III (1676); Richard Pace IV (1700); Richard Pace V (abt 1734), m Sarah Day; Charlotte Pace b 1763.

The only controversies I know of concerning this lineage involve spouses, such as Mary Knowles-Baker and Rebecca Poythress.

I am sending a separate email to P K detailing the Pace Society info re Charlotte Pace.

Date: 98-11-18 07:36:36 EST From:
bapace2@juno.com (Betty A. Pace)

I am looking for the date of death of my grandfather CHARLES WAKEFIELD PACE, SR. (b. 1878 in Salisbury, Rowan Cnty, NC). His father was JOHN FLETCHER PACE (1844-1901) and his mother was CLARA BELL WILSON PACE (b. 1858-d. 1943 in Greensboro, Guilford Cnty, NC). After the death of Fletcher Pace, she had remarried REV. HENRY FRANK STARR of Greensboro, Guilford County, NC.

My grandfather, CHARLES WAKEFIELD PACE, SR., had married my grandmother, MARY ANN POOLE PACE (b.1879 in Salisbury, NC-d.1953 in Norfolk, VA.). They had divorced in the 1920's and Mary Ann Pace and the children stayed in Norfolk, VA, while Charles W. Pace, Sr., a railroad machinist, went to Bluefield, WVA. The children of this couple were: Rachel, J. Fletcher, Clayte, Charles W. Jr.(my father), and Bobby W. Pace.

In Bluefield, WVA, CHARLES WAKEFIELD PACE, SR., remarried, to May Smith GLASS, the widow of state senator GLASS of Clifton Forge, VA. There were several Glass children, a boy and a girl Catherine, who was adopted by Charles Wakefield Pace, Sr.

We know that my grandfather, Charles Wakefield Pace, Sr., was liviing in Bluefield, WVA, as late as 1952, and know he was old and feeble then. We would like to know his date of death, plus contact any members of this family in WVA.

Name with "hypen plus space" is the that person's mom's maiden name. (I think mothers are as important as fathers!)

From:
bpace@microserve.net (Bob Pace)

I'm searching for the parents of my gggrandfather JOHN PACE who was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey in 1824 and moved to Luzerne Cty PA as a boy. He died in 1902 and is buried in or near Berwick, PA (I expect to be able to visit his grave soon). His first wife was ANN or ANNA JACKSON, who died in 1862, and his fourth wife was MARGARET JANE FORBES, my gggrandmother, WHO WAS 1/2 Native American. According to Jay Boone, children from the first marriage included ELIZABETH, JOHN, ELIZA, and LUCINDA. Children from the fourth marriage included CHARLES (my ggrandfather), 1873-1965, FRANK, HARRY, and NORMAN. NORMAN changed his name to GEORGE HARVEY in order to get a job with a railroad which he had previously quit. Norman is buried near Harrisburg,Pa, and the other three in Luzerne Cty.

Any information or advice to help find John's ancestors will certainly be appreciated. I will be glad to share the information I have or get in the future.

Best regards, Bob Pace

Subj: ABNER PACE - parents of Date: 98-10-01 10:21:15 EDT
From:
BAPACE2@juno.com (Betty Pace)

I am interested in finding the names of the parents of my ancestor, ABNER PACE, who was orphaned and apprenticed to Hiatt & Jean (saddlemakers) in 1837 in Guilford County, NC. At the time he was said to be 16 years of age, thus born around 1821, presumably in NC, according to later census reports (which give somewhat different dates of birth). In 1843 he married JULIA ANN REED in Guilford County, NC, although he was shown on marriage records as ABNER PASE. He had one son, (JOHN FLETCHER PACE, born around 1845 in Salisbury, Rowan County, NC), and apparently lived in Salisbury as a saddle/harness/carriage maker through the Civil War until his death. JOHN FLETCHER PACE was a Civil War hero with the 57th NC Regiment, recruited in Salisbury, NC, in 1862. His wife, JULIA ANN REED PACE, died in Greensboro, NC (Guilford County) a little after 1910. She was living with a granddaughter MAGGIE PACE WOODWARD (WOODARD), whom she had raised from childhood in her home with Abner. Maggie's father, JOHN FLETCHER PACE, later in his life became the Police Chief of Salisbury, NC, dying in 1901, while the husband of his second wife CLARA BELL WILSON PACE. They had been married in 1874 after the death of his first wife, MARY L. WOODSON PACE, who probably died shortly after the birth of her daughter, MAGGIE PACE (later MAGGIE WOODWARD).

In Guilford Country there were other young Paces apprenticed as orphans to various artisans around the same time as Abner, and these may be siblings or cousins. Their first names with approximate dates of birth are: ABSALOM PACE to harness maker in 1840 (b. 1821); EDY PACE in 1841 to spinner (b. 1828); GEORGE WASHINGTON PACE (called JOHNSON) in 1853 (b. ?); LIVELY PACE in 1839 (b. 1831); NEEDHAM PACE to farmer in 1839 (b. 1828); WISEMAN PACE to saddlemaker in 1837 (b. 1825); YOUNG PACE in 1847 (b. 1834), also apprenticed again in 1850 to cabinet maker perhaps only a change in apprentice master due to death of prior master. According to information from the Guilford NC Historical Society, to be apprenticed one must be orphaned by the death of one or both parents, or perhaps deserted by parents.

I would appreciate it if anyone could contact me if they recognize any of the names given.

Thank you. Betty A. Pace 7305 Granby Street Norfolk, VA 23505 BAPACE2@juno.com

My name is DAVID LYNN PACE
Address: 5830 S. Hillerman Dr. Tucson, AZ 85746

History:

My Father - JAMES LYNN PACE
His Father - JAMES GOODLOW PACE
His Father - WARREN ALBION PACE
His Father - GEORGE C PACE & JOHANNA SALOME GRANN PACE

My query concerns a prospector in Arizona named W. J. PACE (first and middle names unknown to me). I ran across his name in The Journal of Arizona History, Vol. 26, No. 3, page 308, mentioned as a partner of a J. M. Murphy. Together, they apparently located fairly rich copper veins which subsequently became the Copper Creek Development Company of Bagdad, Arizona. PACE & MURPHY established their claim in 1882, and sold it for $200 in 1883 to a JOHN LAWLER of Prescott, AZ. The author of the article knew no more about this W.J. PACE, not even what the initials stood for (I'm betting on William James). Do you know of any W.J's that may have disappeared into the desert southwest in the post-civil war era? Any info would be appreciated.

Thank You: David L. Pace

Subj: RE: WILLIAM PACE Date:97-09-02 14:04:22 EDT
From:
KevAsh@prodigy.net (Kevin Ash)

My name is Kay Ash and I am really enjoying research on our branch of the PACE family. I am currently stuck on my GGGrandfather, WILLIAM PACE who was born in GA abt. 1822. WILLIAM had the following children, all born in GA, by his first wife (name unknown): JULIA ANN b. abt. 1843, ANDREW b. abt. 1846, JAMES KNOX POLK b. June 19, 1847. WILLIAM then married MARY ANN POLLARD in Marion County, GA on February 28, 1847. The following children came of that marriage: JOHN b. abt. 1850, MARY JANE b. abt. 1852, MARTHA ELIZABETH b. abt. 1853, SARAH (SALLIE) b. abt. 1855 and lastly, ALLISE b. abt. 1859 (must have died shortly thereafter). The first evidence I find of WILLIAM PACE is the 1850 census for Marion County, GA. In the Alabama state census for 1856 there is a WILLIAM PACE listed in Talledaga County, AL. The 1860 census shows WILLIAM PACE and MARY in Marion County, AL (same county, different state). The 1865 Alabama state census shows MARY and the children and that two males died in the civil war from illness. The 1870 Marion County, AL again shows MARY and the three girls. I have been unable to determine which of the many WILLIAM PACE's who served in the civil war belongs to this family. Any information on WILLIAM would be helpful.

As to the rest of the family, MARY ANN POLLARD PACE moved for a short time to McNairy County, TN and then to Hill County, TX (approx. 1876) with her son JAMES KNOX POLK PACE (who married JOSEPHINE CLAUSEL, November 10, 1872 in Alcorn County, MS) and MARY JANE PACE WEST (who married NATHAN JOSEPH WEST on December 12, 1878 in McNairy County, TN). The three girls stayed in the MS area: JULIA PACE (who married PETER FRANKS on January 26, 1864 in Shelby County, TN), MARTHA PACE (who married JOHN FRANKS on October 18, 1871 in McNairy County, TN) and finally, SARAH (SALLIE) PACE (who married Z. T. SWEAT on May 19, 1878 in McNairy County, TN).

As to my relation to the above, I will begin with myself: KAY PHILLEY ASH b. 1963, Dallas TX; DOROTHY PACE PHILLEY b. 1924, Dallas, TX; BENJAMIN FRANKLIN PACE b. January 13, 1889, Hill County, TX, d. September 30, 1968; JAMES KNOX POLK PACE b. June 19, 1847 in GA, d. October 5, 1916; WILLIAM PACE b. abt. 1822 in GA

I apologize for he length of this e-mail, I wanted to give as much info. as I have. I can be reached by e-mail at: TGRF63B@Prodigy.com. My snail mail is: 243 Riverside Drive, #201, New York, NY 10025. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a good amount of records, several good pictures and lots of family stories to share.

Thank you so much,

Kay Ash.

I'm DON HANSEN, 3611 Dover St., Napa, CA 94558. I'm looking for any help with my gggrandparents. I find them in the 1870 census for Newton County, Mississippi. Their children are listed as , MARY, DEMPSEY, JOHN & REBECCA ELIZABETH, who married WILLIAM JASPER WYATT. REBECCA is my ggrandmother. I have no info on JESSE & MARY SARA except what's listed above. Boy, do I need help!!

Thank you,

Don Hansen

Don; Saw your query on the 1998 Pace Network Queries page and I believe I can answer it. My primary source is the book "Pace, Your Family and Mine." There is also good census data to back this up. Jesse Mercer Pace was born 13 May, 1819 in Clarke Co., AL, the youngest son of John Pace and Elizabeth Jones Pace. He married Mary Ann Smith about 1839, and died 9 August 1890 in Conehatta, Newton Co., MS. Mary was born 19 April 1822 and died 5 Feb. 1890. Their children are listed as: Martha J., Margaret Ann, James Polk, George D., Elizabeth, Evelyn, Mary (Mollie) Harriett, Dempsey R., and John L. Pace. Jesse's father John died in 1821. Shortly after that time John's widow Elizabeth Pace moved to Copiah Co., MS with her family. She did live with Jesse for a time. She died in 1854. In the late 1830s most of the family moved to Newton Co., MS, including Jesse's brother Richmond Pace, my Great Great Grandfather. As to John Pace's parents, well, welcome to the Frederick Pace controversy. Some oral tradition states that Frederick was John's father. (See Frederick Pace controversy on the Pace network.) Fred was probably John's brother. We know John and his brother William Pace left Chesterfield Co. SC a few years after 1800, along with Dempsey Pace. They settled in Clarke Co., AL. William settled in Georgia for awhile, and then moved to Clarke Co. after John died. In all probability, Frederick Pace was with John and William on this trek, but disappeared or died either en route or after settling in Clarke Co. We just don't know. There is evidence that what was probably Frederick's family was in Clarke Co. Mississippi Territory early in the century. John and Elizabeth Pace's children were: Louis, Stephen, James M., George W., James Dempsey, William, John, Thomas J., Richmond, Martha, Martha, Jesse Mercer and Mary. The two Marthas, Louis, George and John died before they were adults. John was buried on his homeplace in Clarke Co. Check out Messages and Chit Chat, also on the Pace Network. I am the ggg-granddaughter of Polly Pace and Nicholas Gianniny of Albemarle County, Virginia (m. 1807). Polly was the daughter of Benjamin Pace and Ann Robinson, who lived variously in Goochland, Fluvanna and Albemarle. I'm trying to pin down who Benjamin and Ann's parents were, and the names of all their children. I suspect that my Benjamin was the one born to William Pace & Hannah Booten before they moved to Goochland from Middlesex, but there's no firm proof on that yet. Other Pace connections appear later in the family, all the way down to a now deceased great-aunt who kept the family stories alive until the younger generations finally got interested. Her late husband, Arther Pace, was co-founder of "Pace's Taxi" which still serves the Charlottesville, VA community.

I just recently found the PACE homepage and was happy to find there was some information on Indiana PACE'S. I am originally from Indiana. My grandfather was EDWARD FRANKLIN PACE, born 10-11-1890, died 5-13-1981. He had several siblings. One was ISAAC WILBER PACE, born 5-3-1879, died 4-18-1916. Another brother was PERRY. I do not know any other information about him or other siblings, though I remember my grandfather talking about his brothers and it sounded as if there were more. His father was JONATHON and mother PARLEY MCFARIN. They must have passed away when my grandfather was small because he was raised in an orphanage in Valporaiso, Indiana until he ran away to his brothers house in Knox County, not sure if Bicknell or where. He lived the remained of his life in the Knox County area. His brother I. WILBUR married LUCY PRY and had several children. When he died, my grandfather married her and they had three more, one of whom was my mother My grandfather was in F3U.S Navy during WW1. That is all the information I have of him outside of his children. I would appreciate finding out more about his siblings and especially his parents and other ancestors. I am finding this could be addictive. We have records on my husbands family tracing back to Germany and France and I would of course like to do the same. Thank you so much.

Great site! There are so many John Paces that I hit a wall with this family. My ggggg grandparents were John and Abigail Pace who lived in south Mississippi; by 1850 Census were born in NC in the early 1790's. They both died in so. MS. I have no information connecting them with the older generations of Paces.

My lineage is through their son, Zebedee F. Pace (b c1813 in Alabama), who may have been a minister, since he performed several marriages recorded in Marion Co., MS. William Pace was either a brother or son to John (born before 1810, he may be too old to be a son), lived close by, and married Anna Broom. I believe he is the ancestor of Luke Pace mentioned in a query by Gail Fair. I will e-mail her about this.

Further descent: (7) Zebedee md.Candis Morris >>>> (6)John G. Pace (b1836) md. Armadilla Lott >>>> (5) Dicey Pace (b1857) md. Franklin Weatherford >>>> (4) Zilphia Weatherford (b1877) md Erasmus Broome >>>>

(3) James Carl Broome (b1907) md Sarah Bennett >>>>

(2) Gwendolyn Broome (b1945) md Charles Herrin >>>>

ALSEY PACE b 1781 in TN, d 1815 Robertson Co, TN, m SALLY STUMP 12/13/1808 in TN, Salley b 1786 GA, d 1829 TN.

WILLIAM PACE b 1746, m 1767, d 1845 in TN.

CHRISTOPHER and ALSEY PACE apparently both moved to Benton Co, AK in 1835 from Haywood Co, TN. Both received land grants in Benton Co beginning in 1843. I am seeking any info on WILLIAM PACE such as place of birth, wife's name, parents, etc. Since his son ALSEY was born in TN it is likely that WILLIAM spent most of his life there.

Subj: (UNKNOWN) PACE married JEMINA JANE PENDROY in INDIANA and had son named MARIO
Date: 98-04-06 22:22:28 EDT From:
pendroy@worldnet.att.net (Don Pendroy)

Seeking name of the unknown PACE that married JEMINA JANE PENDROY and had son MARION PACE around 1840 Indiana. ALSO further information about Marion PACE who may have been raised as MARION PACE PENDROY in Marion County Iowa - MARION PACE grew up in Marion County Iowa.(Surname of maternal Granparents) see www.home.att.net/~Pendroy for more details.

History in Marion County Iowa

Author Note: Jemina Jane Pendroy was the daughter of Jacob and Margaret Pendroy. She was born March 21, 1821. Later public records call her "Jennie" and J.J. Pendroy.

Apparently she was married to an (unknown) Pace. This was written in the Nelly Beyers letter..."she married Pace and Mosier."

The 1850 census records of Jacob and Margaret Boots Pendroy househould list an 8 year old "Marion Pace" born 1842 in Indiana. Jemina Jane would have been 21 at this time. (I thought "Pace" was Marion's middle name, but other facts have unfolded. I believe "Marion Pace" may have been Jemina Pendroy and (Unknown) Pace son.

I do not know the circumstances of why he was living with his grandparents Jacob and Margaret (Boots) Pendroy in 1850. Jemina Jane Pendroy had married Mr. Daniel Mosier 1 year earlier in 1849.

It is unknown by the author if Marion was raised and called and known as "Marion Pace" or as "Marion Pace Pendroy" or if he may have later joined his mother in the Daniel Mosier household and taken the name of "Mosier", which was the name of Jemina Jane Pendroy's second husband. At this time I am assuming he probably was known as Marion Pace Pendroy.

What became of "Marion Pace" is completely unknown at this time. I have not encountered his name as an adult but I hope to to find out more about Marion Pace's story some day.

I found that Mosier-Pace marriage in the Marion County Iowa marriage records I had on and copied earlier. Also the marriage of two children that listed Daniel and J.J. or Jennie (Pace) Mosier as their parents.

Here are the records I found relating to this family.(Marion Co Iowa).

Daniel Mosier Jemina Jane Pace 29 Nov. 1849 (Marion Co. Ia. Marrige Records)

James McBride, 28, b. Ind. Wm. McBride, Mary Whitted

Mary E. Mosier, 21, b. Mo. Daniel Mosier, J.J. Pendroy

Sept. 16, 1880; D. Edmundson, J.P.

George Mosier, ?9, b. Iowa; Dannie Mosier, Jennie Pendroy

Subj: Paces in Australia Date: 98-03-30 19:08:05 EST From: a.pace@pgrad.unimelb.edu.au (Alan Reginald Pace)

I am Alan Reginald Pace living in Melbourne, Australia. In 1997, there was a Pace family reunion at Donald, a wheat town in the state of Victoria. A grain milling element is evident historically. Our origins seem to go back to Millfield, Northumberland, England. More specifically the village or property of Rosen nearby. Within a mile or so there is Pace Hill which overlooks Flodden Field, the site of perhaps the last battle between the English and the Scots. {I expect that my folk either took part, or more likely, stood on Pace Hill & watched - but don't take that too seriously, It's a bit of Aussie irony!} I lived in Louisville, KY for a year and had no idea that so many Paces lived in nearby states. I'm keen on hearing from other Paces out there. Contact me on this address:- a.pace@pgrad.unimelb.edu.au

Subj: PACE - PEACE - BONAPACE Date: 98-03-24 03:10:13 EST

From: Dazyy5@aol.com

I stumbled across your page quite by accident and would like to compliment you on a great page.

I wanted to post a query but thought I should make sure I was not barking up the wrong tree (pardon the pun).

My family surname is Peace. I have been told that our ancestors had the name Pace - which was anglicized or corrupted from the name Bonapace. My first traceable ancestor was Isaac Peace who sailed from England to Barbados on a sailing sloop called the Marlborough. In Barbados he married Elizabeth Gibson d/o Rowland Gibson, Esq. From there, Isaac and Elizabeth came to South Carolina c. 1770 to supervise her father's lands. Isaac fought in the Rev. War -- I believe for the British.

My most recent Peace ancestors settled in South Carolina - moved to Habersham County, Georgia and then returned to South Carolina (Anderson Co.).

Can you tell me if you are aware of any Pace connection to the name Peace or Bonapace. I do not want to clutter up your query pages if I am totally off base.

Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. I did review your queries but did not see any reference to "Peace."

Thank you in advance.

Webmaster's comment: You are not cluttering the query pages. The connection of Pace and Peace is documented in the page on the origin of the Pace name . However, it would be nice to know your name and address.

Subj: POLLY PACE and Sevier County, TN Paces Date: 98-03-14 22:04:10 EST
From:
jimkirk@ix.netcom.com (Sheila Bledsoe)

Sevier County, TN Paces... My great-grandmother was POLLY PACE married JOHN MAC LEWELLING (possible different spelling).Children: MARY JANE LEWELLING, JIM LEWELLING, MARGARET ANN LEWELLING HALE (my grandmother)born 31-May 1885, MARTHA CODELIA LEWELLING HELTON, IDA LEWELLING SING, MINNIE LEWELLING THOMAS, ASHLEY LEWELLING, WALTER LEWELLING(changed spelling to LEWELLYN), JOSIE LEWELLING, and JOHN ROSEVELT LEWELLING. My grandmother said that POLLY'S sister HARRIET PACE had the following children by JOHN MAC LEWELLING (but they never married), CORRE LEE PACE, INNIS PACE, BEULAH PACE, OLLIE PACE, CALVIN PACE, HATTIE PACE, BETTY PACE, and JIM PACE.

When I tried to find anything out from the Pace side of the family, would not talk about it.

My grandmother died in November 1997 at the age of 92, she was 38 when my father was born, most of her family's children were much older and we never knew them. But, she would talk to me when I was young about the secrets in the family. She said POLLY'S father's name was JOHN, and that a grandmother or great-grandmother of hers was a member of the Cherokee. And that her grandfather or great-grandfather received a pension from the war (don't know which one).

The courthouse in Sevier County, TN has burned twice making records for the area rare. But, I saw PACE, JOHN & WILLIE, TN-Date 96-05-05 by AILEEN TARVER, Rawleigh, NC and noted that in the 1850 Cherokee County, NC listed a family: WILLIAM PASE 52; HARRIET 46; DARCUS(f) 18;PHEBE A. (f) 15;DEMARIUS (f) 13;MA---R. (f) 11;FRANCIS(f) 10;POLLY (f)3---This would probably be about right for the age of my POLLY.

Anyone with any information I would love to hear from you.

To: Pat Lundy - Pat48084@aol.com From: Bruce Howard

Dear Pat: In case no has yet contacted you concerning your query about the parents of George S. Pace, I will tell you the following. George Sanders Pace was the son of Williamson (aka William) Pace and Cressie Sanders of Middlesex County, Virginia. George was born in either Middlesex or King and Queen County. His father was born in King and Queen County. George grew up in Middlesex and married in that county, not in Lancaster. You need to concentrate you research in Middlesex which is where he lived and worked, reared his family, and where he died.

Webmaster's note: The following query shows the advantage to browsing all the pages of the Pace Network. Jon Pace responds to Rich Bench almost two years after Rich posted his query. In addition to info on John Wesley Pace, the response also contains useful information on Paces of the Atlanta area of Georgia (including a cemetery where Paces are buried now surrounded by a subdivision), tracing back to Bertie Precinct, NC)

I would like any information on my GGrandfather, OLIN S. PACE (1856-1908), he was married to ANN HUNTER SAVILLE (1860-1901). They lived in south Georgia and had my grandfather WESLEY KIMBROUGH PACE (1881-1950) who married ???. They had son Wesley K. Pace Jr., two daughters, LILLA MAUDE and EVELYN. After his first wife died he married my grandmother JULIA MAE HARRELL (1891-1975). They had two daughters. My mother GEORGIA OLIVE PACE and INDIA PACE

OLIN S. PACE also had another son STEPHEN PACE who was a Georgia Sate Representative for many years. When I was about 8 years old I remember he was researching the Pace family and had published a book. However, I have not been able to locate any of that information. Thanks for any help.

To: Kathryn Holley - ksholley@alaweb.com from: Bruce Howard

Dear Kathryn: Here are some clues and information for you that I have found in my files. Your family is from Terrell County, Georgia, which I am sure you know. However, your grandfather was not given the name Wesley. His name, according to the census and marriage records of that county, was West Kimbrough Pace. He is shown as West in every instance. He was born in that county in March 1881. His first marriage occurred August 2, 1903 to Miss Maggie Marshall. His second marriage took place November 20, 1913, to widower Mrs. Julia Mae Bell. Harrell no doubt was her maiden name.

I would suggest that you make a trip to the Birmingham Library and visit the main library where the genealogical collection is and concentrate your search in that county.

He did in fact have a younger brother, Stephen. Stephen was a successful lawyer in the town of Americus, Georgia. That is in Sumter County, which is the next county to the north of Terrell. Stephen was later elected to the House of Representatives and in time became the Chairman of the Joint Committee on Finance, a very powerful position. Terrell County has never had a fire and the Yankees did not burn the courthouse of that county, so they have all of their records, according to my survey information of the State. You might want to plan a trip to that area. You may be surprised what you will learn.

My name is Mary McLenigan. I am researching my family lineages and am stuck on GEORGE DAVIS PACE.

The earliest Pace my family records show is GEORGE DAVIS PACE b.1811 in Lancaster, VA. He married ELIZABETH LUCINDA HUTCHING in 1834. They had issue: MARIAH ELIZABETH PACE b.5-22-1840 in Middlesex Co. d.3-26-1918 Richmond, VA, GEORGE R. PACE, M.R.(RUSSELL?) PACE, THEODORE A. PACE of Staunton, VA. Prof. GEORGE R. PACE had issue J.T. LEWIS OF Richmond, VA, LILLIAN PACE of Washington, and ROY B. PACE, professor of Swarthmore College PA. My gggrandmother was MARIAH ELIZABETH PACE, she was the second wife of BENJAMIN COTTRELL (coal merchant in Richmond, VA) on 12-24-1863. They had issue: BENJAMIN HOWARD COTTRELL, ESTELLE W. COTTRELL, VIRGINIA LEE COTTRELL, OLIVE COTTRELL, MARIETTA B. COTTRELL. BENJAMIN HOWARD COTTRELL b.1-6-1870 Richmond VA d. 5-30-1961 Richmond VA married (10-18-1893) LELIA PACE DOWELL b.8-1-1872 d. 2-4-1941. I feel that it must be pointed out here that Lelia Pace Dowell is not related to the Pace family. Her father's best friend at the time of her birth was a Pace and he named her after his friend. BENJAMIN HOWARD COTTRELL and LELIA PACE DOWELL had issue MARGARGET HALSEY COTTRELL b.3-11-1900 Richmond VA. She married ROBERT WELLFORD PHILLIPS, my grandfather. My father ROBERT WELLFORD PHILLIPS Jr, b. 7-30-1926 Richmond VA married MARTHA AMANDA SHUPP b.10-8-1927 New Bern NC. My maiden name is MARY WELLFORD PHILLIPS.

Any help you could give me with GEORGE DAVIS PACE would be appreciated. My address is 2364 Softwind CT, Reston VA 20191

Dear Mary: Look at the query of Pat Lundy of Troy, Michigan. The two of you are from the same family. You should get in contact and work together. George D. Pace was the son of George S. Pace of Middlesex County, Virginia. Middlesex County is the key to finding information on your family.

I have told her that I believe that George Davis Pace is the son of George Sanders Pace, George Sanders Pace is the son William Pace and Crissy Sanders, and Willam Pace is the son of Benjamin Pace was stuck there. She responded saying that she thought that William was the son of Benjamin Pace II and Frances Williamson, and that Benjamin's father was Benjamin Pace (b.in 1700) and Mary (?) where Benjamin was the son of John Pace and Elizabeth (?) and so on. I have been meaning to contact her again to find out if she had any "proofs" of these connections.

To: Rich Taylor - Kidrolyat@aol.com From: Bruce Howard

Dear Rich: If I send you information that you already have then just disregard this. Alfred Gaines Pace may have been born in Elbert County, Georgia but I suspect that he was reared in old Pike County. This the county he and his family resided in. It is where he married and where other members of his family resided. Alfred was a millright, which means that he constructed mills as opposed to being a miller, or mill operater. He travelled all over working wherever his trade took him. It is a subject you should look into. If you ever have occassion to go to a grist mill pay close attention and you will have an idea of the kind of work he did. My grandmother's dad was a millright also and I have been to a couple of them he built in Alabama. That was back in the early 1950's. If you ever have a chance to come back South, you should visit the archives in Atlanta and get into the records of Pike. However, if that is not possible you might consider hiring a professional genealogist to look into it for you. Something tells me that Alfred G. is connected to old Solomon Pace of that county who later moved to Upson County. Upson is the county to the south of Pike. Check it out and see what develops.

I found some new information about my family. My grandmother was originally a Johnson. Her name was Kathrien and she married Carl Pace. Carl's dad was John Pace and his wife's name was Alef. Kathrien's parents were Hurl and Alma Styton Johnson. I believe they were all from Alabama at the time of their marriage but I'm not sure. This is all I know about my family other than my father who was Carl's son. His name is Donnie Craig Pace. Please help me out with this, I would like to know about my family and so would my father.

Sincerly, Justin Lee Pace

My request is rather unusual in that I've already researched my Pace line as follows:

Gayle Jones (me)

father- John William Pace, b. 15 Aug 1931, Pottawatomie Co., OK

gfather--William Henry Pace, b. 10 Jan 1895, Lowell, Benton Co., AR, d. 14 Feb 1980, Nokomis, Montgomery Co., IL

ggfather--Charles Ingram Pace, b. 29 May 1875, Bentonville, Benton Co., AR, d. 1936, AR

gggfather--Charles Humphrey Pace, b. 27 June 1838 VA, d. MO

ggggfather--Edward Pace, b. 1 Jan 1800, Pittsylvania Co., VA, d. MO

gggggfather--Francis Pace, b. 25 Nov. 1764, VA, d. VA

ggggggfather--John Pace of Middlesex, b. 1722, VA, d. VA

As you can see I'm part of the John PACE of Middlesex controversy and I'm also part of the group of PACE's that moved to Western MO. Charles H. PACE fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War and afterwards moved to TX where he met and married his wife. They later returned to MO and then on the AR, where my grandfather was born.

My query involves my grandfather--William Henry PACE. He was married several times and never spoke of his past much. The following info was recorded in a journal kept by William Henry PACE's mother. William's first wife was Birdie PLUMMER, mar. 27 Nov 1915 Holdenville, OK. Their only child, a boy was born 9 Nov 1916 and died on 10 Nov 1916. Birdie died the following year 28 Apr 1917. On 7 Mar 1919 he married Gladys UNDERDOWN in Fayetteville, AR. A son named Clay William PACE was born on 8 Feb 1920. Soon after they divorced and she returned to IL with Clay and my gfather never saw him again. Ten years later, William Henry PACE met and married my grandmother. My father wants very much to find his only brother. With something so recent as far as genealogy research goes, I don't know where to start.

Dear Gale: If you do not have a CD-ROM on your computer, you might consider having one installed. You might also want to purchase, at your local computer store, or a Wal-Mart, or K-mart, the latest version of the phone book. One is called Phonedisc and is put out by Digital Directory Assistance. But, there are also others available. It is a great tool for finding people who are still living and have a phone. These things cover the entire country. Next you might consider purchasing the Social Security Death Master File on CD from American Genealogical Lending Library, P.O. Box 329, Bountiful, Utah 84011-0329. They will send you a complete list of their offerings for free. This Master File on CD is very valuable for trying to find someone in this Century that may have already died. You have little to lose and everything to gain at this point! Right?

Webmaster -- You can also access the national white pages and look up anyone you want--just go to http://www.altavista.digital.com and click "Find People." Or try http://www.switchboard.com. Anything on the CD ROM should be on the Internet.

I am also researching the Pace family - my husband's line is as follows:

Descendants of William Pace*

1 William Pace* b: 1757 in Wles ? d: 1826 in Clarke County AL/b Ulcanush Baptist Church?
.+Drucilla Grissom* (?) b: 1770-1780 in GA d: Aft. 1840 in AL

William, wife Drucilla; Wiley, wife Elizabeth were all members of the Ulcanush Baptist Church (source: Ulcanush Church minutes)

I know there is question as to the Frederick Pace line:

Descendants of Frederick Pace*

1 Frederick Pace* b: in Wales [see controversy on this subject --Webmaster] d: Bef. 1800 in
Chesterfield CO, SC?
.... 2 William Pace* b: 1757 in Wales? d: 1826 in Clarke County AL/b Ulcanush Baptist Church?........ +Drucilla Grissom* b: 1770-1780 in GA d: Aft. 1840 in AL

.... 2 Dempsey Pace b: in Wales d: 1875
.... 2 Frederick Pace
.... 2 Girl Pace
.... 2 Girl Pace

Although I have not had a chance to go thru all the information on the web page on the Pace family, in my browsing I did not notice any mention of research in Wilkinson/Randolf Co's of GA . I was just wondering if that might be a new avenue to research. I have only begun working on the Paces, so I have not done any research there myself. Also, are there any other descendants of William Pace & Drucilla Grissom out there?

Just wondering.
Thanks, Sylvia Dees Knoxville, TN

Roy, Plz know that I found that Murray Pace and Mary Ashlin had a dau Susannah that m. Robt Tinnell..... This is probably the Pace line that Nancy Lloyd is referencing in her Jan 16, 1998 e-mail. I think she is wrong about Joseph Pace, although I don't know exactly who the father of Nancy and Mary Pace that m. Tinnells should be.

I sent her my Houchins-Pace family sheet. I told her that I would make sure that her Pace query gets published in our PACE BULLETIN, if she will send me her Pace query plus her Pace family sheets.

Our Pace Society thanks you and I thank you.
