I am fairly new at this, so bear with me.
My grandfather was John PACE (b. 1880's) from Crittenden Co., Ky. Wife NANCY UNKNOWN. In checking, I find mention of a JOHN L. PACE who received a 28 acre land grant in Crittenden Co, KY on February 21, 1854. I believe this to be my grandfather's grandfather.
My grandfather's name was OFFUT THOMAS (O.T.) PACE who was married to BEULAH LEE AUSTIN.
New material: I have traced my ancestors back to John Pace, Sr. of Brunswick Co., VA Spartanburg, SC. One of his sons, Richard Russell Pace, is my 3rd gr grandfather. I understand that John Pace, Sr.'s father is Francis Pace. I can't find out anything other than that. Do you know anything about his wife, parents, where he lived, etc...

The following members of the Pace family of Cole and Camden counties, MO are buried in the Murray cemetery, just south of Centerville, MO., Cole Co. We know nothing about their origins. One idea is that MARTHA PACE MURRAY may have been part Cherokee, another that CHRISTOPHER MURRAY's mother was Cherokee. Christopher did move to Oklahoma following Martha's death in 1892, where he died in 1901.
Do you have any information on these Paces that may help us in our research on this complicated family (Wilson-Murray-Pace)?
ELIZABETH PACE, b. 1/23/1828, d. 11,1892, married CHRISTOPHER MURRAY (1825-1091). She is buried in the Murray cemetery, just south of Centertown, in Cole Co., MO. Their daughter, MARTHA MURRAY, married WILLIAM WILSON in 1868; they had 15 children. They are the great grandparents of my Wife, HARRIETT WILSON THOMPSON.

6. RICHARD PACE(1699-1776) married Elizabeth Cain, daughter of James Cain.
7. Drury Pace (1745-1801) married Mary Bussey (1745-1806), daughter of Charles

8. Nancy Pace (b. 1770) married Abiah Morgan (b. 1767), son of Evan Morgan

My name is Robert N. Grant 15 Campo Bello Court Menlo Park, CA 94025 (H) 415-854-0895 (O) 415-614-3800
I descend from JOHN WRIGHT and MARY (PACE) WRIGHT.
JOHN WRIGHT was the son of JOHN WRIGHT (Goochland County Carpenter) and JUDITH (EASLEY) WRIGHT and was born between June 10, 1732, and June 11, 1736. JOHN WRIGHT, the son of John the carpenter, married MARY PACE on January 14, 1756, at St. James Parish, Goochland County, Virginia, moved to Bedford County, Virginia, in 1768, and died there in 1814.
MARY (PACE) WRIGHT was the daughter of JOSEPH PACE and ANN (BASFORD) PACE and was born in 1739 at Middlesex or Goochland County, Virginia. [**Probably Goochland -- See below - Webmaster]
I am interested in communicating with persons researching these families, especially on the Wright side.
**Webmaster: The following information is relevant to this query, as it helps locate the birthplace of Mary Pace Wright as probably Goochland County.

"Chas Bond of Goochland co. va. and Mary his wife to William Johnson of Middlesex Co.VA. l18 for 250 acres on little bird creek.
Wit: Joseph Pace (and others) recorded 20 april 1736.
My guess is that Wm. Johnson was the husband to Joseph's sister Margaret Pace. (m) Sep.22,1717 bapt. 15 March 1701/2 Christ Church parish Middlesex Co VA. This property is in the area that Joseph and Ann Basford settled in . THE PACE FAMILY 1607-1750 states that Joseph and Ann moved to goochland in 1739. They came up with this date because he patented 130 acres sept. 22, 1739. this wit: of deed places him in Goochland in 1735 a good four years before previously stated. Also proves that Margaret Pace Johnson and her husband Wm were in Goochland in 1735. this is a case of getting the facts rather than making assumptions. I wouldn't be surprised if Joseph and Ann were in Goochland before 1735. happy hunting Jack Pace.

My PACE ancestor's name is MARGARET PACE. She was born about 1815 in Rutherford Co., Tennessee and married PEYTON CHRISTIAN in Rutherford Co. in 1833. Soon after, they moved to Warren Co., Tennessee where they remained. I have not as yet been able to definitively identify her parents. My "hunch" at this point is that she is a daughter of WILLIAM (b. 1773 North Carolina) and ISABELLA PACE who moved first to Georgia and then to Tennessee around 1805. This WILLIAM PACE is the son of WILLIAM PACE (b. c1750 North Carolina) and RUTH LAMBERT who along with all their other children moved to Tennessee. I am having difficulty locating any records that make any connection between my ancestor and the other Tennessee PACEs. So, I have resolved to trace all the descendents of WILLIAM PACE and RUTH LAMBERT in Tennessee and beyond. I've accummulated a great deal of US census records and some county court and marriage records. I would be very happy to exchange information with anyone coming across PACEs that had lived in Tennessee at any time.

He may have been from the Nashville, TN area. He married Genieva Inez ROBERTS COLLINS ca 1930 and moved to San Antonio, TX. Inez was from the Jacksonville, AL area. Charles' parents were Clay (or Henry Clay) PACE and Josephine ????. Iwould be grateful for any information on the ancestors of Charles.

Michael: Are you a student or a teacher at Purdue University? Do they have a library on campus or in Gary where you have microfilm available to you, or possibly on interlibrary loan? I believe you will find your Henry Clay and Josephine in Arkansas instead of Tennessee. There is a Henry and Jocy Pace and their children residing in Benton County, Ark. in 1900. I believe if you will check both 1900 and 1910 census for that county you will discover the people you are looking for. I also have the feeling that Henry came from Cole County, Missouri. I might be wrong but it want hurt to check it out. Bruce.

I am a descendant of JOHN PACE of MIDDLESEX, coming down through JOSEPH/ANNE BASFORD; JOHN/SUSANNAH HOUCHINS (is it Houchins or Hutchings?); MURRAY/MARY BRAGG; JOHN/POLLY GROOME;WILLIAM;ELIZ.HAGGARD; ZACHARY TAYLOR/MILLY JANE FISHER; JOHN/KATHLEEN MATHERLY to me Betty Pace Rose. After MURRAY(Mary Bragg) and his family came to Clark Co.,KY my home, the family, for the most part, stayed in same area since early 1800's. My question--where did the name MURRAY originate in this family? JOHN of MIDDLESEX'S second wife was MARY MURRAY and if she bore no children of John Pace, would John's grandson, JOHN/SUSANNAH HOUCHINS, name a son for her? If not MARY MURRAY, who? Some other relative? A political figure? The name just appears without an obvious clue, at least to me an amateur, and doesn't appear in any other Pace line although there were many other Murrays through the years in Clark Co. Hope someone has answer.

To: Betty Rose - 102662.172@compuserve.com From: Bruce Howard
Betty: No one knows where the name Murray originated in your line. It had nothing to do with Mary Murry Pace of Middlesex County, however. There were no family ties to her in the Pace family. After the death of John, Sr., she relinquished all claim to the Pace estate, remarried and disconnected herself from the family, and if I remember correctly she was dead many years before Murray Pace was born in another part of Virginia. I don't see any connection whatever. This doesn't mean, however, that there was not another Murry/Murray that may have had something to do with the Houchins line. My interest in Murray Pace comes through his daughter Mary Ashlin. Remember her? She is the one who married William Craddock. Their oldest son, Jonathan, married Mary Ann Pace of the Richard Pace line in Calloway County, Kentucky. As to the name Murray, it doesn't have to be a family name at all. He could have been named for a friend. Many of the early Paces named their children for friends, statesmen, national heroes, biblical names and the like. My own ancestor was given the name Isaac. He was the oldest child and at the time of his birth there were no other Isaacs in any of the family lines. They all had reasons for naming their children the way they did, but we may never figure it out. --Bruce.

I have a copy of a sheet from the 1850 Census in Perry County, Ohio. It is quite difficult to read because of the poor handwriting, but there are quite a few Pace family names on it that can be made out. Following are their names and ages in 1850 and all were born in Ohio:
David Pace----36 (Wife) Pace---36
David Pace----20 (Wife) Pace---16
Abram Pace---13 Isaac Pace----12 Elizabeth Pace-9 Nathan Pace---5 (Child) Pace---?
My interest right now is in the 16 year old wife of 20 year old David. I have reason to believe that she is the daughter of the neighboring Cooper family: Michael Cooper age 53, born in Virginia, and Ann age 43, born in Ohio. If you can verify this relationship and provide her first name, I would greatly appreciate it. Russell M Cooper
Response from Bruce Howard, posted 9/9/96:
To: Russell M. Cooper
Russell: I have all of the Paces in Ohio for the year 1850, and I am afraid I can not identify a David Pace age 36 with a wife of the same age in Perry County. The David Pace you are interested in is living in the household of Michael and Ann Cooper and is working as a loborer. You asked for her [David's wife's] first name; her name is Jemima. Whether she is a Cooper or not, I can not say because I do not have any of the marriage records for Ohio at this time. Checking the marriage records for Perry County may be the only way you will discover who she is. You might try writing to the State Library and Archives, State Office Building, Columbus, OH 43215. If they can not help you then you might need to write to the Clerk of Probate, Perry County Courthouse, New Lexington, OH ( I don't have the zip), and see if they can locate a marriage for you and be sure and give a close time frame. They don't have time to look through every book. This is not much help, but I hope you get lucky and find what you are looking for. --Bruce.

I am a novice at the geneaology game and at this point only know my ggrandfather, MADISON TOUCHSTONE (Tony) PACE, born in Henderson County Texas(?), 18?? and my grandfather LEONARD EZRA PACE born in Athens (Pine Grove), Henderson County, Texas, 1886. I know my family is listed in a book on the DAVID ALLEN OWEN family, although I am not exactly sure how the PACES fit into that family. I've heard tales that we came from Virginia in the 1600's though Mississippi and Alabama and finally settled in Texas. But I really haven't a clue as to the truth on that subject. I suppose I am just trying to find out a little more about my family history and if anyone would care to enlighten me I would certainly appreciate it.

I have enjoyed reading the queries on the PaceNetwork. Perhaps someone can help me with the following line: Who were the parents and grandparents of my 4th g. grandparents THOMAS PACE (1795) and wife CEBELLE MATHEWS? After Thomas' death Cebelle married a BENJAMIN CARR and lived in Georgia. I believe that Thomas is referred to as Thomas of Halifax (North Carolina) and I have seen an abstract of his will naming his children: JOHN, ELIZABETH (m. WILLOUGHBY POWELL), MARY (m. a WARD), MARTHA, WILLIAM (m. CLAIRE PULLEN), NANCY, HARDY (b. 5-11-1784, d. 11-17-1836), and James. From a copy of entries in Hardy Pace's Bible, published in Georgia Bible Records, submitted by a Carry Pace Becker, I have determined that my descent is through HARDY and his second wife FRANCES (Fannie) HOPKINS (b. 4/23/1793), their daughter SUSAN PACE (b. 2/3/1824) and her second husband ROMALDO R. WHITEHEAD (b. 1837), their son CHARLES THOMAS WHITEHEAD (b. 1859 Twiggs Co., GA) and wife JONANNA LEONARD BAKER, their daughter LEILA WHITEHEAD (b. 5-10-1885) and husband CHARLES E. Anna: You ask who the parents of your Thomas Pace is. His father was John Pace, Jr. of Northampton County, NC., and his grandparents were John and Elizabeth Pace of the same county. I would suggest that you might want to concentrate your search efforts in Northampton County around the period 1760, which is when John Jr. died and his son Thomas in February 1761 petitioned for letters of administration. Between that time and the year 1768, Thomas moved his family across the river into Halifax. There are a good many records on them in that county starting in 1768 until after his death. Good hunting.

I have hit a snag on my Pace line. In researching my father-in-law, I discovered where his and my grandson's middle name came from. Elizabeth Pace was a 75 year old widow living with a daughter, Alice Bromlow in Grimes Co., Texas in the 1900 census. In the 1880 census she was a 55 year old widow living with her son, James in Grimes county Texas. Her state of birth and James's father's state of birth is given as Ga. Daughter Alice was born in Ga. in 1855 and Son James in Ga. in 1858 but without the name of Elizabeth's husband I haven't been able to find any more. Elizabeth is the ggg-grandmother of my sons, so I am interested in finding a little more information on the Paces.

Hi, I am not a researcher (yet) I just punched up the name Pace on the Altavista engine and got your page. I am interested in my relationship to the Paces. Here is what I know:
My great-grandfather was JAMES MITCHELL PACE born in Flatrock NC on August 20, 1879. He married NAOMI BROCK also born in Flatrock on March 9, 1876. My branch of the Pace family moved to Montana (Louistown and Bozeman for the most part) by the early 1900s and have remained there. My mother, BETTY DEEGAN (ne BROWN) and I are interested in tracing our family back to NC and further. My maternal grandmother was ANN LOUISE BROWN (ne PACE). There were approximately 7 childeren in her family (my great aunts and uncles); she was born April 23, 1907 in Bozeman Montana.
I know that I have a great-great uncle who resided in NC and lived to be approx 102 years old. He was able to give my uncle (Mom's brother) some info on the family, but all of an infromal nature and info that I have only heard through filters. He mentioned that there was a grandmother (my gr3 grandmother or gr4 grandmother was a full-blooded Cherokee indian who's last name was CORN). There is also a rumour that we are related to the Pace who went to San Antonio TX to start the famous Pace Salsa Co.
This is as much as I know. I will talk to my mother and see if there is more, but I would appreciate it if you could throw some light on my ancestry.
Thanks in advance,
Gwen Deegan, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
In Regard to JAMES MITCHELL PACE I have gotten a little more information from my uncle who visited his great-uncle (my gr, gr-uncle) just before his 100th birthday. His name was SPURGON (SPURGIN, SPURGEON[sp?]) PACE.He lived in North Carolina and he died shortly after his 100th somewhere around 1992-1993, which makes his birthdate somewhere around 1892-1893. He was the brother of my GGGrandfather JAMES MITCHELL PACE but was one of the youngest if not the youngest in the family (approx. 12 years younger than James Mitchell). He mentioned that the Paces had received a land grant from the King of England (17 hundred and something) in Virginia in appreciation for their service (in War?-not sure). Does this tie in at all with the original Richard Pace?
Thanks,
Gwen Deegan, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Note from Webmaster: Don't be in a hurry to link to Richard Pace. Work on the current family first and back up carefully one generation at a time, making sure you verify everything carefully. Richard and Isabella Pace received a grant of 100 acres each in 1620, by virtue of being "Ancient Planters", or in other words, having been in the colony since at least 1616. Your family legend might or might not refer to that grant.

Bettie, I suspect that you are rather new at genealogy and have come to a brick wall in your research. Believe me all of us have been in the same place at the start and we all needed help to chip away at the wall.
Here is something that may be of benefit to you in your search for John Thomas Pace of Petersburg, Virginia, and his family. Go to your library and ask if they can obtain microfilm on Interlibrary Loan Program. I don't know what is available to you in your local area but from what I can tell you have a rather large market place available to you, either in Seattle, Tacoma or Bremerton. Surely one of the libraries in your area can do this for you.
The Library of Virginia (use to be the Virginia State Library and Archives) in Richmond has on microfile all marriage, birth and death registers for the entire State begining in 1852 to the early part of this Century. You will want to order only those for the City of Petersburg. All of the birth's will be on the same reel for every year, giving the childs name, date of birth, parents names, etc. that occurred in the City of Petersburg. This will give information about the parents of John Thomas Pace. You may also want to check the marriages and deaths to see when they married and if any children died during their time there. You can learn a lot from these old registers. Be sure and record every Pace you find whether you think they are related to your family or not. You never know!
Once you have learned as much as you can from this source, update your query on the homepage and take it one step at the time. You never know who may be checking the network that has an interest in the same family. It may even include me.
I almost forgot to mention that the Library of Virginia has moved last month from its original home on Capitol Square. They moved to a big new building about two blocks west on Broad Street, on the north side of the street. You can still use the old address and the mail will get to them. Keep in touch.
Bruce.

Bruce Howard responded to Susan, and even more impotantly, Susan made contact with Perry Dunn, who was researching the same line. CARRIE WESLEY PACE was born 8-31-1859 in either Columbus, GA, also listed as Russell County, AL. In the 1860 Russell County census, I found her at age on, and a MARY PACE at age 20, living with the PORTERVENT family. In 1870, she was with the same family. Not sure how the Portervents were tied in, but the name was found in an old family bible. On 3-31-1878, in Girrard, AL, she married JESSIE WILLIAM RYDER. He was killed in a hunting accident sometime in 1880 before their daughter, NETTIE CLAUDIA RYDER was born. She moved to Sanford, FL to have her baby at the direction of her brother, JOHN E. PACE. CARRIE died on 1-7-1939 in Sanford, FL. On her death certificate, her parents are listed as MR. PACE and MOLLY BLACKBURN. (Thinking last name might even be BLACKMON)
JOHN E. PACE, born in 1853, Georgia. On the 1870 Harris County GA census, I found him at age 7 living with the CASSELL family. Not sure why he and his sister CARRIE were seperated, or what happened to their parents. Or if they maybe had the same father, but different mothers. JOHN E. PACE moved to Sanford, FL and became a wealthy man, and was known as the "Celery King". He married ELLA BRANTLY on 7-13-1879 in Volusia County, FL. No known children from this marriage. He died in 1923, and is buried in Sanford, FL, however, neither Florida or Georgia has a death certificate for him. Nor does the cemetery files show an exact date of death for him.
Any help on CARRIE WESLEY PACE or her brother, JOHN E. PACE would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Joe: The clues you will need to find your ancestors will be found in Harris and Muscogee Counties, Georgia. The Russell County, Ala. Paces almost to a man came from Harris County, Ga. The same with those of Macon County, Ala. Most were either children or grandchildren of William and Mary Pace of Muscogee County. I would suggest that you also check out all of the Pace men who served in the Confederate Army from Harris County and see who survived and who died in the war, which might explain the two children being orphans. Just because they were living with different families in different places does not mean they had different mothers. The mother may have died also and they were "taken in" by others. There was hard times in the South after the war and more than one family was split up and some even lost, like one of mine, as a result of the war. I am an experienced genealogist and I have some real "head scratchers" in my bunch following the War Between the States here in Dear Old Dixie. But, if you keep digging you will eventually find the answer. Check the 1860 census for each of the counties I have mentioned and see what you can come up with. If you can identify the name of the father send it along and I will check the Confederate rolls I have on file and see if I can give you an outfit to check. --Bruce

My g-g-grandfather was Edward PACE, b. ab 1797, Fluvanna, VA, the son of Murray PACE and Mary BRAGG, who moved into Clark Co, KY in approx. 1809. Edward was marr. to Nancy JUDY, 6 Sep 1825 in Clark Co. Edward is listed on the 1820 and 1830 census from Clark Co. but is not on the 1840 census. However, his wife Nancy is listed with son William (John Wm, my great grandfather), Amanda, Hannah, Sarah and Nancy (Jr) . When and where did Edward go? If he died, where is he buried. I have been able to find nothing on him since the 1830 census, but I do know his youngest dau Sarah was b. 1839.

Hope you, Bruce Howard, or another Pace researacher can help with my problem of what happened to Edward PACE and when.
My g-g-grandmother was Mary B. PACE, b. 15 Feb 1811 in Clark Co, KY. She married Francis KELLEY in Clark Co, 14 Jan 1834, they moved to Calloway Co, MO and in 1837 and 1839 had their first 2 sons, James F. and Bluford Allen.( There were other subsequent children: Emily, John, Dosia, Joseph, William Worth, and George). By 1850, they had moved to Linn Co, MO where they, lived, raised their family, died and are buried. I believe that Mary B. PACE was the dau of Joseph Pace, and Mary Ann Ricks . But might have been the daughter of James Pace (brother of Joseph). Upon the death of James, Joseph was named guardian of the two minor children: James and Dosia. Was Mary the older sister who was no longer a minor at the time of James Pace's death? Who is Mary's father? Both Joseph and James were sons of Murray PACE and Mary BRAGG. Bond for the marriage was Wyatt (Wiet, Wiatt) PACE. Who is he? How does he fit into the family. He also moved into Calloway Co, KY after 1834.

Your Jonathan Pace married in that county and he and new wife Mary are living there in 1840, and with a young family in 1850, including your John Wesley Pace. If you can't go to Georgia and research yourself, I would suggest that you write to the Georgia Department of Archives and History, 330 Capitol Avenue, SE, Atlanta, Georgia 30334, and request a list of genealogists for hire. That is always a gamble but if you give the genealogist specific things to look for instead of a credit card you can usually get what you want. Since you know that he later lived in DeKalb County do not confuse that with living in the City of Atlanta. He lived near Shallow Ford which was not a part of Atlanta in the 19th Century. I know it is today, but not then. Good hunting. --Bruce Howard

Richard,
Imagine my surprise when I found a query in the PACE Network about someone in my family tree. I have had the name in my computer (on PAF) for over 10 years. I spent a good deal of time in the late 1980's, early 1990's interviewing my great aunts to gather as much history as I could. For JOHN WESLEY, I have the following:
JOHN WESLEY PACE (10/20/1849 - 3/20/1923) born in Milton County, GA; married ALBERTA HARDEMAN (3/24/1850 - 10/27/1934). According to oral history they had two (2) daughters:
MAYBELLE ACLEM PACE & IMOGENE HARGIS PACE
My notes say "Removed from Milton County, GA to Missouri in the 1870's or 1880's".
You might be interested to know that they did not go alone. John's sister and her husband went with them to Missouri.
CYNTHIA N PACE (12/17/1847 - 1/25/1928) born in Milton County, GA; married DAVID MILTON BROOKS (???? - ????). According to oral history they had three (3) children:
GUY PACE, WILLIE PACE and daughter PACE who married a HARRY BEDSON.
Milton County, GA is now combined with Fulton County, GA. It is now the city of Alpharetta a suburb of Atlanta. JONATHAN PACE and MARY THOMPSON PACE along with several children are buried in middle of a modern Office/Residential complex called Windward. When I first found the cemetery it was in the middle of a large tract of land being consolidated. This Windward development decided to include it instead of moving it. It is well kept.
I have extensive history for the descendents of JONATHAN PACE. Almost all of it is oral history. I have also done extensive research on him and his ancestors. Unfortunately, I do not have the time to devote and have not even looked at it for several years. I will include what I have learned. If you would like, I can print and mail you the details of what I do have.
The PACE lineage for my grand children Kimbrough Allen PACE, Jr. (6/18/1993), Caroline Judith-Diane PACE (3/28/1996) and Emily Ann PACE (9/4/1997)
KIMBROUGH ALLEN PACE, SR (9/19/1969), 3/23/1991 m. ALICIA MICHELLE NIX (1/21/1966);
JONATHAN ALEXANDER PACE (1/7/1943), 9/1/1962 m. HELEN DIANE KENNEY (7/11/1941);
+++ This is me !!! +++
GEORGE RANSOM PACE (4/12/1921), 11/6/1941 m. SYBIL RUTH SENSING (10/26/1921);
CLIFFORD RAYMOND PACE (12/21/1895 - 7/10/1973), 5/20/1920 m. LENA MAE PRIEST (11/17/1902 - 5/15/1985);
GEORGE ROBERT PACE (9/27/1864 - 6/29/1946), 1892 m. DORA ELLEN TURLEY (4/11/1875 -- 6/6/1915).
JONATHAN PACE (4/11/1815), 2/23/1840 m. MARY THOMPSON (8/26/1818); left Saluda, NC in 1840;
CORNELIUS PACE (17??), (NOTE: died before 1870)
I can find nothing about this man beyond the Federal Census of 1810, 1830 and 1840. I could not find him in the 1820 census. Also, property deeds after death relate him to Jonathan PACE.
Burrell Pope PACE (1753 - 1816 in Bertie County, NC), 1778 m. Lydia WOODRUFF (8/25/1760 - 1810 in NJ); along with mother petitioned State of NC for return of confiscated property of father; petition being denied, removed to SC; returned 1804. By waiting on their claim, they probably missed out on migrating to Nova Scotia, Canada with other PACE families. Buried in Saluda, NC which was originally called Pace's Gap. There are still many PACE families living there.
John PACE (1732 - 1780), m Sara POPE; resided in Surry County, NC; Loyalist; along with elder son, killed in battle (or ambush) at Shallow Ford on the Yadkin River, all property was confiscated by State of NC.
I hope you weren't looking to join the Daughters of the American Revolution through this line!!!
Please understand that much of what I have is oral history. I have some copies of public records to verify a few things. I have spent hours in libraries here in Georgia, in NC and in the National Archives both here in Atlanta and in Washington, DC. I am a amateur historian and genologist, at best. I would probably benefit by taking some classes or reading to learn more about the methodology.

Hunting anything on these two men. The mother was MARTHA PACE - Called "Moo" or something like that. lived in Sevier Co.,TN. Moved to Knox or Blount Cos, TN They were born out of wedlock, father was my grandfather, ALFRED BAKER. One was killed in war - maybe WW2. Would love to connect with them or families.
(Response to request for further info): I am Aileen Irvin Tarver and live in Raleigh, NC The Paces lived in Sevier County, TN and maybe Vestal section of Knoxville or possibly Blount Co, TN. Just not sure. Sorry I don't have any more info. I found them in the 1910 census in Sevier. I understand one of these boys came to my aunts house years ago and she wouldn't go out and talk to him, wish she had and maybe we'd have some contact. Time is tunning out for me to find him and maybe already has run out. Thanks for the info and I'll look for info. Aileen AFOWL 96:07:02 1:28edt am

I read your query with interest and some questions come to mind. You give the names of two Pace boys, John and Willie of Knox or Blount Counties, Tennessee, and that they were the illegitimate children of Martha Pace of Sevier County. Then you say "father was my grandfather, Alfred Baker." Are you saying that Baker was the father of the two Pace boys by Martha? If so, did Alfred Baker and Martha later marry and that is how he became your grandfather, or is it that you are not related to the Paces at all but curious about these two Pace men? If Martha Pace did not marry Alfred Baker, do you know who she did marry, or did she ever marry anyone to your knowledge? I know the family that Martha belongs to, but I don't know anything about her personally. If you can help me out on this I think I can help you. Bruce.

Seeking info regarding WILLIAM PACE,
According to recent information, William PACE was born in Leslie County, KY, Jul 1879. His parents were John and Mary (X) PACE. John was b. abt 1857, somewhere in the Clay-Perry-Knox-Harlan Counties area. William was killed in a Black Diamond Coal mining accident 18-Feb-1917, probably in Harlan, KY. William mar. LUCY GREGORY in 1900, and they lived in the Clay/Laurel county region where they raised six children. Anyone with information on William's nuclear family and his ancesters would be greatly appreciated.

Bruce Howard's response is rather lengthy, so I moved it to a different page.. Peggy updated her query following Bruce's response, so if it doesn't seem to make sense, that't the reason. I am leaving it here because of good information it contains.

I have so little on this line that I'm embarrassed, but that's why we're all hooked on genealogy, right? I can use lots of help!
My one and only entry on this line is:
Jenny PACE, b. 1810 in AL, m. Henry William HODNETT. Jenny is my GGGrandmother. If anyone has any clues to Jenny's parents, I'd be very appreciative!

My only suggestion might be: If possible, adding places of birth to the entries. It would help give a clue to other possible family members in different parts of the country... not just Virginia. I'm convinced that my Jenny PACE's family probably came from Virginia, as her husband, Henry William HODNETT, was born in Prince Edward Co. VA. in 1802. Their son, my ggf, John Foster HODNETT was b. in1843 in Perry Co., AL

My husband has Pace ancestors, who were born in in the Orkney Islands, moved to Leith, Scotland (near Edinborough) and later went to Newry, Northern Ireland. His great great grandfather was Hugh Pace who was a watchmaker on Newry about 1850. His wife was Helen McPhail and several of their children moved to New York in the 1880's and 1890's. Would like to contact any other Pace researchers.

Roy, I hope you can help me with two problems. Did Richard Pace b1638, d 1677 marry Mary Knowles, b Apr 1641, dau of John Knowles and Mary Brodnax? Some apparently believe this is so and some believe it not to be true.Data from Marianna Matkins stated: By 13 Mar 1661/2 he had m. Mary ___ with whose consent he sold land on Powell's Creek in Charles City Co. to Richard Taylor. Charles City Co. Order Bk. p327. It is probable that Mary Pace was the dau of Richard Baker of Charles City Co. who on 21 Jan 1664/5 made a deed of gift to Richard Pace for 140 ac "lying on the other side of the bottom on the west side of the aforesaid Baker's plantation. Ibid p530. On the same day Richard Pace witnessed a deed of partition of land between Richard Baker & Patrick Jackson. Ibid 533. Administration on the estate of Richard Pace was granted 14 Feb 1677/8 to his widow Mary Pace. Ibid p270. She m 2nd Nicholas Whitmore and both were alive 3 Aug 1692. Ibid

Thank you so much for your response.
I am not a descendant of the Pace family. I am researching the BRODNAX line which we plan to publish in 3 volumes, the 1st vol. already published. I am sorry to have "lost" the Pace line but there is no evidence of a Brodnax connection. Thanks for your help.
Georgia Archives has just acquired History of the Pace Family, compiled by Freda Reid Turner. Much of this book concerns descendants of Richard Pace and his wife Elizabeth Cain. I descend from NC Cains: William who d 1732 Bertie Precinct who m Elizabeth (we believe) Hardy, proof of which is only in the frequent Hardy names in the descendants. Richard Pace Junr Jurat was a witness to his Will. His son William Cain, Will 3 Aug 1757, Edgecombe Co. NC who m Sarah Braswell (?); their son Elisha Cain of Chatham Co. m Martha Blake; their son Hardy Cain who m. Mary Foreman and died in Amite Co. MS.
At the time I compiled this history, I tried hard to identify Elizabeth Cain but was unable to do so.
Later a cousin who descends through Cornelius Cain believed his was the Cornelius of Hart Co. GA. I "combed" the earliest records there but found nothing to make any determination except that there seemed to be a relationship to the Pace family. I suspect this Cornelius Cain was a relation of Elizabeth Cain who married Richard Pace.
I appreciate your interest. Thanks for all you have done and will do.

I am descended from William PACE, born perhaps around 1770 or 1780, who married Elizabeth ____ and had at least one daughter, Leah Clarinda PACE. Leah married James ROBERTS and had ten children, all born between 1826 and 1844 in and around Washington Parish, Louisiana. Thus Leah herself would have been born somewhere around 1800-1810. I have no other clue as to where William PACE came from, except that there seem to have been other PACEs moving from the Carolinas to Louisiana and Mississippi at the time. Can anyone shed any light on my line?

From Bruce Howard:
Gina: Here are the children of Michael Pace and his wife Ann, of Pennsylvania - William, b. 1788; John, b. 1794; Michael, b. 1797; Peggy, b.1800; Henry, b. 1802; Josiah, b. 1808. These are all of their children. They did not have a son named Elisha. The names and dates are from his own testimony. I would suggest that you might want to look into the family of Michael's oldest son, William, who later moved into Ohio with some of his younger brothers. If William doesn't pan out then look at David Pace, the brother of Michael, who also lived in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Some of his children may have gone into Ohio at a later time. It is worth checking out. Also you might wish to contact a man who is working on your same line, if you have not already done so. Contact Gene Henry Crane, P.O.Box 0220, Glenns Ferry, ID 83623.
