BIO

"Dr. D. T. Pace is a native of Shelby County, Ky., born March 16, 1827. He was the fourth of seven children, three sons and four daughters, born to the union of Joseph Pace and Ann Magee. The father, who was a Virginian by birth, died in the doctor's early childhood. The mother was born in Shelby County, Ky., in 1799. In 1837 she removed with her children to Pike County, Mo., where she died on September 27, 1886. The doctor was reared on his mother's farm until he was sixteen years of age, when he began teaching school and studying medicine. During the years of 1852 and 1853 he attended the Medical Department of the St. Louis University, after which he practiced a few months in Monroe County, Mo. The next fall he located at Jackson, where he practiced his profession until recently, with but an intermission of four years. When he retired from practice, he engaged in the drug business. In 1862 he was united in marriage with Sarah A. Criddle, a native of Cape Girardeau County. They had two sons and one daughter, of whom the daughter is still living (now Mrs. Joseph Williams) near Jackson. The mother died May 29, 1869. Dr. Pace was afterward united in marriage with Mrs. Sarah A. Moreland, nee McGuire, an estimable lady, who is still living. The doctor is a member of the order of A.F. & A.M." - Goodspeed's History of Southeast Missouri, 1888 (1964 reprint edition)

Completed "full course of lectures in the Med. Dept. of St. Louis University" - letter of recommendation dated 24 Feb 1853 Diploma from St. Louis Medical College (later became Washington University School of Medicine) conferring M.D. dated 17 Feb 1857

"Soon after he (Dr. Pace) came to Jackson to practice his profession he was called to deliver a baby at Burfordville. After the baby was born and the doctor was ready to return to Jackson the farmer said he had no money, but would pay with a prayer. Dr. Pace apparently accepted that as payment; in his record book was found a memo by the farmer's name, 'Paid in full'." - Source? (info from Bernard Schaper of Oliver House in Jackson)

"Dr. David T. Pace died at his home in Jackson on Sunday, the 14th, instant, of cancer of the mouth and throat. Dr. Pace has been a citizen of Jackson for a great many years and until he retired from the practice of his profession six or eight years ago he was one of the most skillful and popular physicians in this section of the State. He was a man with a strong intellect, original ideas, and sound judgement. His friends were everybody who knew him. He acquired an independent living by the successful practice of his profession and retained it until his death. He was twice married, his first wife being Sarah A. Criddle, by whom he had two children, a son and a daughter, the former of whom is dead and latter is the wife of J.W. Williams of Jackson. His second wife, who survives him, was Sarah Moreland, the widow of the late Alexander Moreland." - newspaper clipping in the album of his granddaughter, Helen Williams Crowe
