The Earliese Missouri Paces.  Posted by Gordon W. Pace on the Pace-L list
With special thanks to Laura Crane

The Earliest Paces in Missouri The Missouri Territory was formed from the LouisianaTerritory on June 4, 1812 and Missouri became the 24th state on August 10, 1821.

The first mention of a Pace in Missouri was Twitty Pace who was mentioned in an article in the Missouri Intelligencer on 3/19/1822, just 7months after statehood. Twitty was born 12/29/1789 in Greenville Co, SC. Census records indicate that Twitty left Warren Co, KY sometime after 1813 arriving in MO before 1818 where his son, John Sexton Pace, was born on 2/17/1818. By early 1822 he had moved to Alabama. By 1828 he was in Pope Co, AR where he was Postmaster. He died in 1849 in Fannin Co, TX. He was a 3rd generation descendant of Richard Pace and Sarah Woodliefe of Prince George Co, VA. He was a brother of Richard Russell Pace, Sr., whose sons were also among the earliest Pace settlers in MO.

The next record is from the book, "Missouri Marriages - Early to 1825" which lists the first two Pace marriages in MO: Hiram Pace m. Matilda Woods on 2/29/1824 in Calloway Co, and Sarah Pace m. Samuel Rhoads on 6/27/1824 in Calloway Co. The proximity of time and location for these marriages suggests that Sarah and Hiram may have been siblings. Unfortunately nothing is known about their ancestry. Since they were not on the 1830 census they may have died or moved to another state by1830.

Hiram Pace does not appear anywhere in the 1850 US census. The next Paces to arrive in Missouri were apparently the three Pace families found on the first Missouri Federal Census of 1830, all in Boone County. They were: JonathanPace b. 1794 NC who married Rachel Bowling on 12/4/1815 in Clay Co, KY and had one known son, George Pace b. 1816. Jonathan was a 3rd generation descendant of Richard Pace and Sarah Woodliefe of Prince George Co, VA.

He is listed on the 1830 census as Nathan Pace, age 30-39, with one son in George's age bracket and two young daughters who have yet to be identified. The neighbor was difficult to read - it appeared to be Bollenger but it could be Bowling, perhaps a relative of Rachel Bowling. I believe Jonathan was the first of these three to arrive in MO as he obtained a land patent in 1826 and another in 1830.

The next family on the 1830 census was Richard Pace who is Richard Russell Pace, Jr. b. 1805 in Warren Co, KY, married Elizabeth Proctor on 10/30/1828 in Boone Co, MO. According to Laura Crane (<A HREF="mailto:lcrane@mail.coin.missouri.edu">lcrane@mail.coin.missouri.edu</A>) Richard arrived in Missouri in 1827. The children of Richard, Jr. were John Lucas b. 9/1/1829, Nancy b. 1832, Mary b. 1834, James b. 1836, Susan b. 1839, Sarah Margaret b. 1843 and Martha B. b. 1846. . In going through the Texas census for 1880 I found what is possibly the first Pace born in Missouri. In Montague County, TX was a Presley Pace age 51, b. MO in 1829, parents b. MO, wife Mary age 45 ,b. MO, parents b. MO. Children were: Marion 19, Frances 17, Nellie 14, Maggie 13, Ellie 9, George 6, Joseph 4, Adalin 1. Obviously Presley was mistaken about his parents being born in MO as that would have been before Missouri was even a territory. From the birthplace of the children it is apparent that Presley returned to MO from 1867 to about 1877, before returning to TX. I could not identify the parents of this Presley Pace but I suspect he was related to one of the families on the1830 census.

What is interesting is that Richard Russell Pace, Jr. married 2nd Mary Nan Proctor bef.1850 and they had a son, Micajah Gibson Pace. Micajah named his first born son Presley Monroe Pace. Presley is an extremely rare name among Paces. Richard Russell Pace, Jr. was a 4th generation descendant of Richard Pace and Sarah Woodliefe of Prince George Co, VA. The 3rd Pace family of Boone Co, MO was a brother of Richard R. Pace, Jr., namely, Lemuel Pace b. 1798 NC, married Susanna Pattonon 12/7/1818 in Allen Co, KY.

He could have moved to MO with his brother in 1827 but the first record of him in MO is a land patent in 1831. Lemuel was shown as Samuel on the Boone Co census of 1830 and had one son under 5. This son is unidentified and apparently died before 1875 as he was not mentioned in Lemuel's will of that year.

Another of the earliest Pace settlers in MO was Thomas Nunn Pace b. 12/5/1801 in KY and died 5/4/1893 in Summer Shade KY. He married Docia Williams 1/9/1823 in KY. Census records show that Thomas arrived in MO between 2/1829 and 5/1831 when daughter Elizabeth was born. The obituary of a son-in-law, Lewis Allen, says that Thomas moved to Lewis Co, MO in 1830 and returned to Cumberland Co, KY in 1841. He obtained land patents in Lewis Co. in 1831 and 1838 and his last four children were born there. Thomas is a descendant of John Pace ofMiddlesex VA, being a 3rd generation descendant of William Pace and Susannah West.

Another descendant of John Pace of Middlesex who was an early MO settler was Wyatt Pace b. abt. 1797 in Henry Co, VA, d. aft. 1856 Calloway Co, MO, married Frances McDonald. Frances was born in KY in 1812. Wyatt probably married her in KY, perhaps in Marshall Co. where his father lived. They arrived in MO sometime before 1834 where their first child was born. Their four children (John William, James A. Phoebe A. and Elizabeth R.) were born in MO from 1834 to 1845. Wyatt was a 2nd generation descendant of William Pace and Susannah West. Wyatt is mentioned in the publication, " A History of Calloway County."

Another of the earliest settlers in MO was James Blair Pace b. 1807 in Pittsylvania Co, VA m. Mildred Davis. He was a son of Francis Pace and Elizabeth Robinson of Pittsylvania Co, VA. James arrived in MO between 1836 and 1837. Some of his siblings arrived soon afterward.

The following are the Pace heads of household on the 1840 MO census:

I would like to thank Laura Crane (the expert on early MO Paces) for providing much information. I welcome additional info re the earliest MO Paces, especially anything about Hiram Pace and Presley Pace

  Western Missouri Paces

Webmaster's note:  My branch of the Pace family came to St. Clair County in western Missouri in the 1830's and 1840's.  This branch is descended from Francis Pace of Pittsylvania County, VA.  Three of the sons of Francis Pace (Hartwell, James, and Edward) moved to Missouri, and a fourth son, Francis, apparently came to Missouri later.  The youngest son, Nickolas, remained behind and took over the plantation. Most Paces of the western counties of Missouri seem to be the descendents of this Pace family.

From Francis Pace, the lineage goes back to John Pace of Middlesex County.  For specific information, you can check out my lineage on the Lineages page.   Click here .

Pace Society Bulletin No. 119, March, 1997, contains some very detailed information on Western Missouri Paces.  It can be ordered for $2.00 (postpaid) from the Pace Society at this address:  D.E. Jack Pace, Historian, 128 Riviera, Williamsburg, VA 23118.  Join the Pace Society and receive the quarterly bulletins--well worth the $25.00 annual dues.

I have posted a descendency chart on Francis Pace, and there is also a page giving his marriage records in Virginia.

This excellent synopsis of Western Missouri Paces was submitted by Betty Mullen Pace.   Her husband is John Pace and this is his line of descent.

Dear Roy, Isn't it strange how twisted family tradition can become. For many years, my husband, John William Pace, said that there were three brothers that had come to this country, settled and then separated. When our daughter finally started getting some documented facts 10 or 12 years ago it was partly true. There were three brothers but they had not just arrived in this country. They came from VA to MO and then separated after a couple of generations. Since first finding ancestors back to VA we have added much information about his line. One of the searchers was Lilliam Fagala a descendent of Francis >King Edward>Charles Humphrey>King William. Our daughter was writing to her until a few years ago when her letters stopped. Following is a copy of a typewritten history that Mrs. Falala signed and dated in 1973. Thought you might like to read it.

____________________________________________________________________

"This is the story of our Pace family, some taken from authentic data, some by word of mouth. There may yet be records found that would change some of this story, but as we know it now, the second great line of Virginia Paces is that which can be traced back to a John Pace living in Middlesex County in 1693. John's origin is obscure. Most present day Paces believe they descended from Richard and Isabelle Pace of Paces Paines, but so far no definite connection with this line has been found. John's oldest child Sarah is intered in the Christ Church Parish Register as born 24 April 1694. John left a will dated 2 Dec 1720, naming all of his children except Sarah.

Joseph, son of John bought land in Goochland County 22 Sept 1739. He willed his son John 140 acres of land which figured in a law suit in 1809. Our lineage is through this son John. His son Francis, moved to Pittsylvania County after 1798. At least 4 sons of Francis moved to Missouri. They were Francis Jr, Edward, Hartwell and James. I was told of two brothers moving together in covered wagons about 1843. The U. S. Government had opened land in western Missouri, so they brought their families and settled in Cedar and St Clair Co. They inter married and named their children after uncles and aunts.

Of the Missouri Paces, Edward was our ancestor. He was tall some say 6' 9" and could walk as fast as a horse. He was helping two other men deliver a small herd of cattle when a bad blizzard struck, the other men were on horses in front of the cattle. Edward was walking behind, the storm was in full blast and it was dark. The next day they found him frozen to death. They buried him there, this happened in Vernon County, we don't know when but his name is not with the family in the 1850 census. [I have a version of this story which said they took his hat back and gave it to his wife. -webmaster]

I have been told that Edward's wife Ruth was a Cherokee Indian. She was a devoted Christian and would walk 20 miles to be in Church when the Baptist Church in Cedar County held services.

Their sons fought together in the Cavalry of the Confederacy in the Civil War, William was killed by bushwhackers on his way home.

The boys all made their home in Cedar County except Charles, who moved his family to Benton County, Arkansas and lived there the rest of his life. Our lineage is through this Charles. He was called Charley most of the time. He had a large family. His youngest son King was next in our line.

Although King's family is scatted he still has several descendants in North West Arkansas." (Signed) Lillian Fagala 1973

Webmaster's note:  My ancestor James Blair Pace came to Missouri in the 1830's and was probably the first of the Paces of Pittsylvania County.  The above story mentions covered wagons.  I have a history of Missouri Paces which cites a family legend that the Paces came in two wheeled carts through the Cumberland Gap, wintered over in St. Louis, then moved on to Western Missouri.  Family legends are interesting, but of course cannot be taken as fact.

Hello to all Paces...

I am new at this, so please bear with me. I am in need of your help. I have done some searching in all area's of the internet. I have also spent time at our local library and the LDS Center. I am sure that some of you have seen my name on bulletin boards and the Genforum. I have had many interesting conversations with Roy Johnson of Pace Network, Tony Pace of Washington, Gordon Pace, Patti Rochette, and others in my search for my ancestors. They have given me great ideas to help me and some have helped. I now would like to send my information out to the mailing list, hoping there is someone out there who might recognize my Pace line and get me started to the road of achievement of my goal. I have enjoyed reading all about your ancestors and I know that you have spent many hours of your time, working very hard, but loving and enjoying every minute. Please take the time to read about mine and let me know what you think. I will begin with my tree and finish with some interesting facts on my family:

JOHN FRANKLIN PACE: born-(date unknown) believe around 1870's. Was a Missouri Native.  death: 12-4-67 in Dallas,  Texas (Dallas County) Tex. Death Rec.

CORA BELL LONG PACE: born in 1877, was Missouri native. Was 73 years old at death.  death: 4-2-50 in Tyler  Texas (Smith County) as per obit.

Their Children: All born in Missouri

JOHN R. PACE and VENA LEE SEATON PACE born: 11-12-1899, Alba Texas (Wood Co.)death: 5-12-1987, Corpus Christi, Tx. (Nieces Co.) Married: Nov. 17, 1917, Emory Texas, (Rains Co.) Their Children:

JOHN FRANKLIN PACE -My ggrandfather was working on the railroad. From what I can understand, he worked all over the US heading west with the railroad. I wish I could find out what railroad, and possibly find his name and some info about him. From family members, they tell me he lived to be quite old and he was very close to 100 at the time of his death. I do have pictures of him and he was last heard of living in Dallas Texas in Oakcliff Area. He was living there in 1952 with his second wife Mary. The last to hear of him was when my grandfather died.

CORA BELL PACE LONG- my ggrandmother lived in Tyler Texas with her daughter ETHEL PACE MYERS at the time of her death. I have her obit and her address was 1609 East Oakwood Dr. She was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery. She was 73 at the time of her death. She listed a brother HERBERT LONG of Missouri in her obit and that she was a native of Missouri. I also have a picture of her.

JOHN R. PACE- my grandfather was born in Nevada,Vernon County Missouri. He worked on the gang on the railroad very young until he married my grandmother, VENA LEE SEATON PACE. Most of the info I have also comes from her Bible. He also worked in the salt mines in East Texas before he moved to South Texas and The Corpus Christi Texas area. I have documentation on him and several pictures.

MARY MARIE PACE WALSTON-my mother. She lives with me now and is 75 years old. She has really been trying to help me with this search. We have gone through papers and boxes and has run into a lot of this information, but would like to find more out about her grandparents and their family.

and now to me...

REBECCA ANN WALSTON FORBES- I am 45 yrs old. I am married to a great husband who lets me use his computer for this search. His name is BRUCE ALAN FORBES. We just recently went through a search for his birth mother and found her, and this got me started searching for the roots of mine.

I truly appreciate your patience and time reading this biography of a family who yearns to find answers. As you can see, my family is getting older and they too are waiting on me to find out the answers for them. If any Pace's who read this can help me in any way, I would truly appreciate it. I look forward to hearing from you, and join in your discussions. I read everyone of them as they come in. Thank you so much Gordon for your advice...I am working on your leads...Hope to have answers soon.

Dear Cousin Roy,

I am Bert Anthony PACE born 19 May 1941 St Joseph, Buchanan Co MO, eldest son of Bert Neval PACE (*28 Nov 1903, Nevada, Vernon, MO d. 11 Jly1993, Tukwila, King, WA), whose brothers are Clyde Hartwell PACE, Clarence Martin PACE, and sister Nola Vista PACE; also all born in Nevada MO.

I'm on a lunch break at work, don't have the other dates memorized or handy.

My Grandparents are Edward Milton PACE, JR (1872, Pacetown, Cedar, MO-1906 Cheyenne Wells, CO [actually in hosp in Denver] and Verona May JEFFRIES PACE LINN HICKMAN (3 Jne 1873 nr Mt Vernon, Lawrence, MO-23 Apr 1953 St Joseph MO).

Aunt Nola (28 May 1898-ca.1980 Omaha NE) said once,"Oh by the way, he was a Junior".

Lucky me, Seattle Public Library has the 1880 Cedar County census microfilm. There I found in South Box Twp; PACE Edward and Salina, with a passel of kids: Charles, George, Benjamin, Edward, Ruth, and Willie among them. Little Ed's age agrees with the date above.

From an early PSAB I found Patti Rochette's list of Francis PACE's many children, noticed Ed and Hartwell. When I first saw that family on the library microreader I must have woke up half the room with my "allright!"

Those same PSABs would call him Francis X Pace and straightaway I think, Gimmie A Break! I'm certain he's a Baptist, and they would sooner name their kids Judas Iscariot than Francis Xavier--way too Popish. I know. I am Catholic-sort of anyway- married to a Baptist for 23 years now.

One of your entries Calls Francis' son King Edward, another has him William Edward, and there is also Murry PACE's son Edward to further compound the ancestor search.

Patti Rochette may have helped my cousin, Lois Jane (SQUIRE) PACE of St Joseph, once; she sent me a chart that went back to Francis PACE, about the same time I found out via the Seattle Library. The things I am looking for now are:

* accurate dates for all of Edward M Pace Senior's Children.
*was Ruth (MORRIS) PACE really a Cherokee?
and with everyone on this page, of course,

*WHO WAS JOHN'S FATHER?

He also had 2 sisters MABEL PACE JONES and ETHYL PACE JONES. I noticed in your letter to Roy that your father was also born in Nevada Missouri about 5 years after my grandfather was born, and his brothers CLYDE PACE and CLARENCE PACE, and sister NOLA PACE. This is the first letter I have seen with anyone born in that area. I was wondering if maybe they were related in some way, like maybe cousins or something. Is there some way that you can find out ? Subject: correction to John F Paces dates

Bruce & Beckye - I was a little off on my Great-Uncle John F PACE's age. He was 8 on the 1870 Cedar Co Census & 18 on the 1880. That makes him about 37, not 35 when John R Pace came along, if my Great Uncle is indeed the same person you seek. I think he is, but I don't have any elderly relatives who could clinch this matter. As late as 1980 Aunt Nola was still kicking, and had a lively interest in our family history. Gone, alas! All you need is some indication that your GGFather John F ever lived near Pacetown MO. My GF did come from there. It is now only a church by a stop sign between Edorado Springs and Jerico Springs, 3 miles west of Filley. (It shows on the recent Filley MO 7&frac12;'Quadrangle) I would like to visit the area and cruise the mailboxes for other Paces -- they're all related. The 1890 Census got wiped out by a fire in 1921; the Vernon Co Courthouse and its records were lost in another fire. The confirming research we need is going to be a challenge. Still, my dad was born in Nevada in 1903, as were Clyde-1892, Nola-1896, and Clarence-1898. Ed Jr was running a section gang in Cheyenne Wells, Colorado during 1900 and may or may not be on the 1900 Nevada MO census. The letter I mentioned was written in Colorado in April 1900.

One brother of the Missouri Paces did not come to Missouri with the rest.  Although this is not a Missouri Pace, material from Patti Rochette on this Pace is included below:  -Webmaster

Webmaster: Your James Pace appears to be a nephew to my gg grandfather James Blair Pace. You can go to the Lineages page on the Pace Network, find my lineage, and from Francis Pace of Goochland and Pittsylvania counties, VA, our ancestry back to John Pace of Middlesex County would be the same. You would want to read the material on the controversy surrounding John of Middlesex.

The notes that I have come from Patti Adkins Rochette of Kansas City, a researcher whose work I trust. She has checked numerous census records and other local records to come up with this material.

Francis Pace II, born in Pittsylvania Co. VA Nov 17 1798 to Elizabeth Robinson [b. c1767 prob Abermarle Co, VA] and Francis Pace I [b. 1764 Goochland co.VA]

You and I are related, although I don't have the specific records on your William Pace. The Paces of Western Missouri came directly from Pittsylvania County, Virginia, and before that, From Goochland County, VA, then Middlesex County. We go back to the John Pace of Middlesex who is the center of a Pace controversy that you can read about on the Pace Network.

As I said, I haven't come across the specifics, but the names you mentioned are a dead giveaway. Here is some material on the Paces, and you will see what I mean.

Francis Pace, Born Goochland County VA Nov 23 1764, d. June 1842 Pittsylvania County, VA, wife Elizabeth Robinson, children Michael (1786), Elizabeth (1792), Nancy (1794), John (1796), Francis (1798), Hartwell (1805) <--(NOTE THIS ONE), James (1807--my ancestor, full name James Blair Pace), Edward, 1808; Mary, 1810; Nicholas, 1814. Source: census records

At least three of the sons of Francis Pace moved to St. Clair County, MO -- James, Eward, and Hartwell. My ancestor, James Blair Pace, married Mildred Davis in Pittsylvania County and he and his brother Hartwell were probably the first. There were a bunch of families from that area who came more or less together, one of which was the King family. The Kings and the Paces were obviously close friends--they witnessed each other's wills and documents and named their kids after each other. The name King as a given name is rampant throughout the descendents of this family.

Your great-grandfather King Hartwell Pace fits this pattern. I have seen the names King and Hartwell as given names ONLY in the descendents of Francis Pace of Virginia. They scattered among the counties of Western Missouri, one of which was Cedar County. King and Hartwell aren't your average given names like John or William. It seems almost certain you are a descendent of Francis Pace. It just remains to find the link.

I have odds and ends of census records of Missouri and have looked through them. I did not find your William Franklin Pace, but I will keep looking.

A lady who has done a lot of research on Missouri Paces is Patti Adkins Rochette, 1001B W. 101st Terrace, Kansas City, MO 64114. She is not on the Internet. She is a descendent of the Nicholas Pace who stayed behind in Virginia. His sons fought in the Civil War then settled in Garland, Texas. Some of the Missouri Paces (they were cousins) went down there when things got hot for confederate sympathizers after the Civil War. My great-grandfather, Joseph Nicholas Pace (son of James Blair Pace) was one. He stayed there a few years then came back to Missouri and settled in Vernon County.

Patti submitted a very detailed listing of many of her records from Western Missouri to the Pace Society, and they appear in Bulletin No. 119, March, 1997.  You can order this bulletin from the Pace Society for $2.00 from:  Dianne Pace, 600 Olive, Jasper, TX 75951.  Make checks payable to:  Pace Society of America, Inc.

So if you will check my lineage on the Lineages page, you can be pretty well assured that from Francis Pace on back, that is your lineage too.

By the way--that Cherokee legend seems to abound in the Pace family, and Bruce Howard says it is a popular legend in a lot of families, but I have seen absolutely no proof and it is highly unlikely that the Paces, coming directly from Virginia to Missouri, could have met up with any Cherokees, who lived in the North Carolina/Tennessee/Georgia region before Andy Jackson drove them out to Oklahoma. However, there are Cherokee rolls where that kind of thing can be checked out.

I'll check further to see what I can find, and I will post your query. Keep in contact. We are related.

Regards, Roy Johnson Webmaster, Pace Network

My name is CAMERON PACE from Springfield, Missouri. I am interested in finding information about a line of Paces from El Dorado Springs, Missouri. My great-grandfather was JOHN DAVIS PACE who married ANNA JONES sometime between 1895-1900. My grandfather, CHARLES ISAAC PACE was born in El Dorado Springs in 1905. They all moved to Moberly, MO just before the Depression to farm. Before this, John Davis Pace operated a small general store at a crossroads just south of El Dorado Springs. This crossroads had a church, his store, and a few houses. This area had so many Paces living nearby that it was nicknamed Pacetown. This is based on the memories of my grandfather's who told it to my father. If anyone has any information about these or related Paces in this area, please email me at cpace02@mail.orion.org. Thanks.

Comment:  El Dorado Springs is very near the area settled by the descendents of Francis Pace of Virginia.  A connection is probable.  --Webmaster

Would love to trace family back beyond Nickolas Pace! Thanks! Carol Wheelis

From Webmaster: Hi, cousin! your NICKOLAS PACE was a brother to my gg grandfather JAMES BLAIR PACE. You are the first of my line (except WAY back) to check in to the Pace Network. Welcome aboard--it's been lonely. To trace your Paces on back to John Pace of Middlesex County, just click here to go to my line in the Lineagaes, copy down what you need, then use the BACK feature of your browser to get back here. You will note that I have not personally verified the Paces before Francis Pace. I believe the lineage to be correct, but if you get a chance to check it out, I would appreciate the reference. You should always personally verify all data anyway. I'm just too darn busy with the Pace page.

I've just begun researching my Pace line and thanks to the Pace Home Page (and the Missouri home page) I've had a easy start. I've found out I'm a decendant of Hartwell Pace and shared the news with his g granddaughter last week. She is the oldest living relative I have and it was her information that got me going.

Thanks again for the info and keep up the good work!!  Teri Rodarte

I am Rachel Ewing-Pace, the granddaughter of Herbert William Pace, b 3/24/1895 d 7/1974 Osceola, MO and Gail Mae Ewing, b 9/14/1896 Fontanlle, Adair Co Iowa d. 10/1990 Osceola MO (from the Findley Ewing line).

Herbert Pace and M. Gayle Pace (she changed her name to Millicent Gayle and then M Gayle Pace) had three children: Harriett Elizabeth Pace Moses, b 9/12/1922 in KC MO d 5/1/2002 Sunter SC; Herbert (Sonny) Willard Pace b 7/4/1924 d 10/1/1997 both KC MO; and Patricia Arleen Pace, b 1934 KC MO - present (my mother). Herbert Willard Pace flew with Heaven's Devils WWII and received many medals, including the DFC.

Herbert Pace was the son of Charles Alexander Pace b? Osage Co, KS d? and Ellen Lewis Pace b? Bala or Merthyr Tydval Wales d? KS? (daughter of William Henry Lewis, a harnessmaker and non-conformist minister and Elizabeth Vaughn, all of Wales; emigrated when Ellen was 12). The other children of Charles and Ellen Pace are Charles, Ina, Martha (called Mattie) and Clarice. Herbert William Pace served in the Rainbow Division in WWI.

Charles Alexander Pace is the son of Andrew Pace and Sarah (or Mary) Bradley Pace. Andrew was killed in an early Civil War skirmish and Charles was born posthumously. His mother left him with her father, Hiram Bradley and her mother, Mary (or Sarah) Stanley Bradley. Charles never heard from his mother again while she was alive though she remembered him in her will. He refused the money, saying that 'she didn't want me when she was alive, and I don't want her now that's she dead.'

Beyond that, I have NO IDEA! Any help greatly appreciated. The family insists it's Welsh. I have read that Welsh Pace is controversial, and I'm not intending to be - if we're not Welsh through the Paces, that's fine - there's plenty of other Welsh in the family!

Subj: WILLIAM FRANKLIN PACE ... Date: 99-01-04 ... E-Mail: - BILL PACE
From: bill_pace@qmailgw.gar.esys.com -

I previously sent a query about WILLIAM THOMAS PACE in WASHINGTON, FRANKLIN CO, MO. I have just received a certified copy of my Grandfather's death certificate and discovered that his middle name was FRANKLIN and not THOMAS. According to the death certificate, his father's name was GRIFFIN PACE and his mother's last name (maiden) was RIGGS. I realize that this information on the death certificate may not be accurate but it seems like a good starting point. I found some postings on one of your pages from DEBBIE PACE DAVIS and your response to her. My grandfather is the one you mentioned who was born in 1866. He died in 1951. According to my uncle (his only other child besides my father), my grandfather was born in VA in 1866. A possible inaccuracy of the death certificate is that it says my grandfather was born in CENTERTOWN, MO. I have ordered a copy of his birth certificate from VA and am eagerly waiting for it.

If you have any other information, I would be very grateful.

Subject: Re: PACE / HOLT References:

Dear Gladys,

We are looking for PACE and HOLT. However, we are not finding where to look for Nathaniel PACE. What I have on him so far: He was a Sergeant in Company G from Carter Co., MO 1862-1864 for the Union. The disability he incurred was "Disease of lungs, Head and Heart." He taught the first common school in the Agee School District in Wayne Co. (now Butler Co.) MO. His uncles were also school teachers. There also was a Joseph PACE who was a notary public and a Silas PACE who was Postmaster for Carter Co., in 1888. We cannot connect them to our Nathaniel even though they were contemporaries. Nathaniel did hail from Tennessee. We have searched the Northwest counties in TN and are now searching the Southwest counties over to centrally located Hardemon Co, TN. My cousin and I had a slight discrepancy on birth date, but we believe it to be 27 March 1832. He is buried in Henson "Hilltop" Cemetery in Carter Co., MO. He married Rhoda Holt 4 Jul 1858 and they had a son, William Newton. There is evidence that he was either married prior to this or had a younger sister, a "Nancy J. Pace." She is listed in the census as living with them born approximately 1844. If this was a daughter of his from a previous marriage, he would have had her when 12 years old. Did they have children that young? My cousin believes that "Martha" (handwritten next to the marriage of Nathaniel and Rhoda) was his previous wife and they had Nancy J. I'm disposed to the belief that Nancy was that younger sister. We cannot prove either.

Robert (b. 1802 in TN) and Mary HOLT (b. 1804 in KY) were Rhoda's parents. Other children were Drewry (b. 1830 in KY) who later became a judge, Frances (b. in Iowa or Ind 1832), twins George and Jeremiah (b. 1834 in KY) and Rhoda (b. 1836 in KY). That is where we've stopped. This Frances married Nathan W. Hendrickson 1 Sept 1850.

Anyway, that's where we are with Nathaniel. His daughter-in-law, my ggreatgrandmother, Belle Melvina Meadows, we have traced back to Scotland when g6grandfather was born in Scotland in 1729. He married a girl from the "colonies."

We have learned that we come from a long line of teachers. Our collective family has over 600 years in the profession all over the continent. We have documented 7 generations. The rest is assumption based on a speech given by my grandmother to a teachers convention. This grandmother, Sweetie Belle Pace Aylor, started teaching at the age of 14. When her father, the Superintendent of Butler Co. School District, William Newton Pace, took poison to kill himself after finding out he had pneumonia, she stepped into his position as Superintendent shortly after she began her career. She ended up teaching over 60 years. We have a rather comprehensive (to our knowledge) collection of this history, including pictures, students' rolls, grade books collected from the Butler Co. marriage books, wills, and probate minutes, Census records, cemetery records, cemetery monuments engravings, family Bibles, newspaper articles, oral info, Poplar Bluff genealogist Betty Hanks, the public and community college libraries and Poplar Bluff school archives.

It has been quite an adventure. It is easy to see how compelling this can become. So far it has brought estranged family members together and raised a few eyebrows. It has created the need for long overdue family visits and correspondence. My cousin and I have found our "long-distance hobby" to be a pleasure. It's the first time in my life I have enjoyed history.

So. . .the mystery of the PACE line compels me. . . and eludes me. I'll continue the search to whatever end. Thanks again for asking.

[A later submission] I found that Nathaniel PACE's dad was Albert Newton PACE b. abt 1797 who married Millie BRAY in 1817, by bondsman, Moses BRAY. Albert's father was Edmund, mother possibly Martha (?). All of these folks were born in Surry Co., North Carolina.

Subj: WILLIAM NEWTON PACE Date: 98-02-11 10:31:44 EST
From: bird@katy.isd.tenet.edu (Pam Bird)

I have submitted a query on WILLIAM NEWTON PACE from Poplar Bluff, MO. I have proof now that he is the son of NATHANIEL PACE who was born in TN 3/27/1832-6/6/1895. Nathaniel was married to RHODA HOLT who was born in KY in 1836. Nathaniel is buried in Henson Hilltop Cemetery, Carter Co. MO. I believe this is near Ellsinore. We have found that Nathaniel was a sergeant in Company G in Johnson Township, Carter Co., MO for the Union from Jan 23, 1862 to Sept 25, 1864. We have also found a Joseph PACE serving as a corporal in Company D from 1861-1864 from the same township and county in MO. Joseph went on to become a notary public in Ellsinore. There is also a Silas PACE listed in the Ellsinore beginnings. He was the postmaster in 1888. These guys may have been his brothers. There is one of Nathaniel's grandchildren still living in Poplar Bluff, MO who is 94 and unable to hear or see. She is my great aunt. We have gotten this info after a lot of leg work and finding a family Bible. In there we found the name Martha written near Nathaniel and Rhoda's marriage entry. In the 1860 Carter Co. MO census it lists Nathan, Rody, Wm. N. (1 y/o) and Nancy J. (16 y/o). Nathan and Rody were married in 1858; Nancy J. was perhaps from a previous marriage - Martha? We do not know and cannot find Nathaniel's TN origin.

I write to give you this update, but also to ask you to delete my original entry for WILLIAM NEWTON PACE. We have found that he was superintendent of schools in Butler Co. (then Wayne Co.) MO in 1897. He was a man of small stature apprx. 5'5. He contracted pneumonia which scared him so he poisoned himself to death. He left his wife, BELLE MELVINA MEADOWS PACE and 7 children. His favorite daughter, my grandmother, SWEETIE BELLE PACE AYLOR, took his place at the age of 14. During his lifetime, he ran for public office on the Democratic ticket for State Representative in 1926. He was a teacher for over 40 years. In 1882 his salary was $35.00 pr month.

Many records were destroyed in the tornado in 1927 that went through that area. However, we did uncover much. We would still like a lead on Nathaniel's family. He is our missing link of all the branches.

Thank you for a job well done on the PACE network. I've enjoyed it in this short time I've known of it and refer to the Queries often looking for leads.

My physical address is 19710 Coppervine, Houston, Texas 77084.

Best regards,

Pamela Bird

From: tlt@fidnet.com (Thomas Thompson)

The following members of the Pace family of Cole and Camden counties, MO are buried in the Murray cemetery, just south of Centerville, MO., Cole Co. We know nothing about their origins. One idea is that MARTHA PACE MURRAY may have been part Cherokee, another that CHRISTOPHER MURRAY's mother was Cherokee. Christopher did move to Oklahoma following Martha's death in 1892, where he died in 1901.

Do you have any information on these Paces that may help us in our research on this complicated family (Wilson-Murray-Pace)?

ELIZABETH PACE, b. 1/23/1828, d. 11,1892, married CHRISTOPHER MURRAY (1825-1091). She is buried in the Murray cemetery, just south of Centertown, in Cole Co., MO. Their daughter, MARTHA MURRAY, married WILLIAM WILSON in 1868; they had 15 children. They are the great grandparents of my Wife, HARRIETT WILSON THOMPSON.

Also interned in the Murray cemetery are the following Paces:

JOHN T. PACE (1844-1930) Mary J. Pace (1840-1928)

Their children (?) BENJAMINE M. PACE (1877-1908) EBEN PACE (1882-1951) HENRY K. PACE (1888-1903)

The following material on MISSOURI-KANSAS Paces was submitted by Charlene Hook ( CHook25@aol.com ):

JOHN KIRK PACE , b. 1825 McMinn Co., Tn., m/6 July 1848 in Greene Co., Mo. to JANE WALLIS. JOHN K. was son of ROBERT PACE and ANNIS BROWN, and ANNIS BROWN was daughter of ALEXANDER BROWN (whom many claim was Cherokee, and who had AT LEAST 272 descendants file claims on the Guion Miller Cherokee Roll, but were not successful). I have never checked the rejects on the Dawes Roll to determine if they filed there. At any rate, Alexander Brown came to Polk Co., Mo. in the early to mid-1830's.

Other children of ROBERT PACE and ANNIS BROWN WERE: NANCY A., who m/ WILLIAM H. A. PHILLIPS, and who is buried in Jasper Co., Mo. She was in Allen Co., Ks. with her mother in 1860; DANIEL M., b. 1832, d. 1853; VIOLETTE E(sabella)A., b. 1835, who married NELSON R. RICKMAN. I have an error in my records here, but probably can get it straight from an ALEXANDER BROWN descendant who lives here in town, as I show that VIOLETTE was b. 1835, m/1865, but d. 1853. That's pretty much a biological impossibility; WILLIAM A.(lexander), who apparently married first in 1848 to JANE BAUCUM and m/2 in 1857 to MARGARET J. NOBLET, was in Allen Co., Ks. in the 1860 census and 1865 in the Kansas State Census. Here again, I have an obvious error, as my old chart shows he died in 1863; and ANNIS V., b. 1836, d. 1863.

Alexander Brown's son ISOM (ALEXANDER?) BROWN and some of the other connecting families went to Allen Co., Ks. in 1855, where ISOM BROWN died. His wife and some of the children and other families stayed there for a while, but by 1870 she is back in Missouri. Can't recall off the top of my head if she was in Polk or Greene in 1870--but they lived near Brighton, which is very near the Polk/Greene County line. WILLIAM A. PACE had children: PALESTINE, b. ca. 1850; THOMAS R., b. ca. 1851; NEPUTURA (T.?), b. ca. 1857; AMADINA, b. Feb. 1860 in Kansas, and MARY, b. 1862 in Kansas. MARGARET JANE PACE and children are #52/50 on the 1865 State Census of Allen Co., Kansas (Deer Creek Township).

Another connection of this family is FRANCES A. PACE, daughter of JOHN K. PACE and JANE WALLIS , m/JAMES A. PROCTOR in 1868 in Greene Co., Mo. Other children of JOHN K. PACE and JANE WALLIS are: ARTILA HAZLETINE PACE, b. 1854, d. 1889; WILLIAM LILBURN PACE, b. 1856, m/MARINA ALSUP; MARY L. V. PACE, b. 1859, m/____TILLER (I can probably locate this marriage if you need it); ARNETY JANE PACE, b. 1863, d. 1879; and JOHN ALEXANDER PACE, b. 1866, who m/MOLLY E. TILLER. The TILLERS were also from Polk County.

I do a great deal of research in SW Missouri, particularly Polk, Greene, Dallas, and Webster counties. My husband's TODD family was from St. Clair County. I have a very large library, covering mostly Missouri (particularly the southwest and along the northern tier across Arkansas), northern Arkansas, Tennessee (all over, but heavy on Maury, Bedford, Lincoln, Marshall, Roane, Hawkins, Monroe, McMinn, that I can think of), and Virginia (mostly southside, but do have some other stuff, including Richmond County), but have a lot of other material too. I had a lot of material at the home of a very elderly friend here--plus we had material we had purchased jointly, and she had always said when she was not able to use it, her own material would come to me. I did not even have an inventory of what was there, and had approached her a couple of time during the past year about getting it and inventorying it, and she just had a fit. But then in early April her family called and said they needed the room where the genealogy books were for a bedroom for her, and they (but not her) were ready for me to come and get it. Her part of the collection was heavy on east Kentucky. We took a van and a 1/2 ton pickup over there and loaded up 54 boxes of books. I have a very small house; and my friend in Pryor, who also has a lot of my material, did not have room to dump that much uninventoried material, so we took it to my dad's empty house in the same town until she could get it inventoried.

It's pathetic to have so much material and not be able to get to it or not know where it is. About 25 years ago I published a genealogical periodical covering Ark-Kan-Mo-and Ok., so I received a lot of stuff on exchange then. Since late 1987 I had not done much with any of it, as I've had a lot of family illness during the past 10 years that have taken up a lot of my time.

I am sorry this is so long--I'm pretty wordy, but what I'm getting at, is I am happy to look up material if anyone wants.

Oh, yes, I wanted to mention to you (and you can pass along to the Pace Society), the Greene Co. (Mo.) archives have published either 33 or 34 volumes of Greene County, Mo., material. Which, at the time I obtained my several years ago (when they had only done 16 volumes or so) were FREE. They continued to be FREE for quite a while, then they started charging individuals postage to mail them, but if you picked them up in person there was no charge. Now they charge individuals $2.00 per volume (but some are big volumes), plus shipping if they have to mail. I sent my sister who lives in Springfield over there a couple of weeks ago to get the new volumes I do not have (29 thru 33 or 34), and she said they are still free to societies. I am presuming this would include family societies or associations, so in case the Pace society maintains a library and wants these volumes they may either get them free, they might have to pay postage only, or they might have to pay $2.00 each plus postage, but they are certainly worth having.

I have over 90 inches of shelf space occupying books on Greene County alone.

- Subj: EDWARD PACE Date: 96-06-25 23:17:17 EDT

Email: chartx@aol.com (Charlotte Headley, Texas)

My g-g-grandfather was Edward PACE, b. ab 1797, Fluvanna, VA, the son of Murray PACE and Mary BRAGG, who moved into Clark Co, KY in approx. 1809. Edward was marr. to Nancy JUDY, 6 Sep 1825 in Clark Co. Edward is listed on the 1820 and 1830 census from Clark Co. but is not on the 1840 census. However, his wife Nancy is listed with son William (John Wm, my great grandfather), Amanda, Hannah, Sarah and Nancy (Jr) . When and where did Edward go? If he died, where is he buried. I have been able to find nothing on him since the 1830 census, but I do know his youngest dau Sarah was b. 1839.

(Just a side note, my direct lineage PACE is on both sides of my maternal grandparents. My grandfather Murry PACE b. 1861, Linn Co, MO is the g- grandson on Murray PACE and Mary BRAGG. and his wife Rosella KELLEY b. 1866, Linn Co, MO is the granddau of Mary B, PACE and g-g-granddau of Murray PACE and Mary BRAGG.)

Hope you, Bruce Howard, or another Pace researacher can help with my problem of what happened to Edward PACE and when.

My g-g-grandmother was Mary B. PACE, b. 15 Feb 1811 in Clark Co, KY. She married Francis KELLEY in Clark Co, 14 Jan 1834, they moved to Calloway Co, MO and in 1837 and 1839 had their first 2 sons, James F. and Bluford Allen.( There were other subsequent children: Emily, John, Dosia, Joseph, William Worth, and George). By 1850, they had moved to Linn Co, MO where they, lived, raised their family, died and are buried. I believe that Mary B. PACE was the dau of Joseph Pace, and Mary Ann Ricks . But might have been the daughter of James Pace (brother of Joseph). Upon the death of James, Joseph was named guardian of the two minor children: James and Dosia. Was Mary the older sister who was no longer a minor at the time of James Pace's death? Who is Mary's father? Both Joseph and James were sons of Murray PACE and Mary BRAGG. Bond for the marriage was Wyatt (Wiet, Wiatt) PACE. Who is he? How does he fit into the family. He also moved into Calloway Co, KY after 183 4.

I am very interested in the Paces of Henry Co. VA. My ggg grandfather, Joseph Pace, was born in Henry Co. circa 1796. He was married in Shelby Co. KY in 1821 to Ann Magee, and died in that same county circa 1836. Ann and the children - including my ancestor, David Thomas Pace - moved to Pike Co. MO in 1837. David became a physician, living and working in Jackson, MO. (See http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pace/pacepix/dtpace/index.html) I have no definite info re: the father of Joseph, but think it was Newsom b 1754 Amelia Co. VA, died 1845 Henry Co. VA, son of William Pace b

 Land Grant Records

Date: 98-06-29 13:24:13 EDT From: darlene@adweb.net (Darlene)

Webmaster's note;  The following records could prove very valuable to Missouri Pace researchers.  They were sent to me by Darlene with a message from Larry Cave, who apparently is associated with the office which gives this kind of info out.  I am not sure just how the records should be cited until I hear more from Darlene.

(Message to Darlene from Larry Cave)

Darlene:

Unless the person you are searching for was the original purchaser, homesteader, etc. of land from the General Land Office then we would not have any record of that person. We only maintain records of the original land transfer from the U.S. to that first grantee - anything beyond that has to be researched at the state or county level. Hope this helps.

- Larry Cave

Missouri Paces that bought Land not complete list as I know My Grandfather William Pace owned 40 Acres but does not appear on these Patient Land or Warrenty Lands

{Webmaster note:  After the general list that follows, keep on scrolling, as Darlene has extracted a number of these records with specific details.  Our thanks to her for a lot of work!}
