Descendents of William Pace Senior and Ann Cain - extensive listing
NOTE: for awhile, information on this page was posted from top to bottom--that is, latest stuff at the bottom. It makes more sense to have the latest info at the top, so that has been changed. However, the earlier material is still as it was. I hope this does not prove confusing.

Hi Gordon,
I know we have had contact before but I was wondering if there was a good place on the internet to locate reliable information on the Christopher S. Pace family. I have so much conflicting information I've become confused as to who is who. Sometimes I see a little here, a little there and things don't match. Maybe we need a web site devoted just to PACE & WOODS families. Does anyone have such a web site set up?

I have not seen any conflicting info on the PACE/WOODS marriages. I would be interested in seeing any such information that you have. My record is quite detailed. Following is a summary:
The PACEs involved in these marriages are all grandchildren of WILLIAM PACE, SR of Montgomery and Robertson Co, TN., except for one g granddaughter.
Christopher Stump PACE b 12/29/1809 Davidson Co, TN, m. Margaret Mariah WOODS (daughter of Oliver WOODS) b 2/24/1815 Rowan Co, NC, m 1830 in Haywood Co, TN.
They had 11 children.
Their daughter Margaretta Salina PACE b 12/1/1834 Haywood Co, TN m James D. WOODS b 1/15/1831 TN - they had 6 children. I don't know who his father was- do you?
Oliver WOODS b 10/15/1784 Madison Co, KY d 1863 IA, m. Nancy HAYNES m 12/1/1807 in Harpeth Lick, TN. In addition to Margaret WOODS above, they had two sons who married daughters of Henning PACE:
Samuel Newton WOODS b 11/7/1808 m. Sicely Walker PACE b 7/5/1807 Wilson Co, TN - they had 9 children.
John Blackburn WOODS b 2/10/1811 TN m. Martha Harris PACE b 4/13/1812 Wilson Co, TN - they had 8 children.
And finally, Henning PACE had a son Henning E. PACE b 1/1/1813 m. Harriett WOODS b 3/2/1822 TN, m in Pea Ridge, AR. I don't know who here parents were -do you?
These are the only PACE/WOODS marriages I know about.
The only significant Pace web sites I know of are the Pace Network and the Pace Family Genealogy Forum. There is no mailing list - but I may start a mailing list in the near future. Let me know if you would like any additional info.

It has been suggested by myself, the Pace Society and others that the WILLIAM PACE, SR of Robertson/Montgomery Co, TN (d 1845) was the son of HARDY PACE and LUCY THOMAS of Urahaw Swamp in NC. This HARDY PACE is the son of WILLIAM PACE and CELIA BOYKIN and is therefore connected to RICHARD PACE of Jamestown. Shirley Pace Graham (ArlisG@aol.com) has sent me what appears to be proof that WILLIAM PACE, SR. of TN is not the son of HARDY PACE.
WILLIAM PACE of TN was known to be between 90 and 100 when he died in 1845, and so was born between 1745 to 1755. HARDY PACE died in North Hampton Co, NC in 1792. Shirley quoted from North Hampton Co. Court Minutes, GSU Film #34812 pt 1, covering the years 1792-1796. On June 4, 1792 The Last Will and Testament of HARDY PACE was exhibited and proved by the oath of Samuel Bell. On page 94, dated March 3, 1793 it was ordered that John Melton (or Metton) be appointed guardian to REBECCA and WILLIAM PACE, orphans of HARDY PACE, dec'd, .... In 1796 March court p 235 REBECCA PACE and WILLIAM PACE came into court and chose John Melton their guardian, "and the same is appointed guardian to ELZABETH and THOMAS PACE." Shirley explained that, in order to choose a guardian, William would have been about 14 and Rebecca would have been about 12. This William, whose full name was WILLIAM RICHARD PACE, was therefore born about 1792, and the WILLIAM PACE, SR. of TN was about 50 at this time.
As a result it is not known (to me) who the parents were of WILLIAM PACE, SR., nor whether his wife was ANN CAIN or even Ann. His first 3 children were definitely born in NC (from census records). A WILLIAM PACE was a witness to deeds in Edgecombe Co, NC in 1767 and 1769 involving LAZARUS WHITEHEAD, HERBERT HAYNES and WILLIAM PRITCHETT in the area of Cain's Mill Swamp, the home of ANN CAIN, HARDY CAIN and their parents. The Pace Society has presented much circumstantial evidence, especially common surnames, linking WILLIAM PACE, SR. to this area of NC. One of William Pace, Sr's sons was HARDY CAIN PACE.
Does anyone have clues to help solve this mystery?

A message was received from Gale Pace Judkins which suggested that I had confused James O. or D. Pace with JAMES DEAN PACE. It read, in part, as follows:
Date: 98-06-30 16:44:27 EDT from: gjudkins@avsia.com
James D. Pace was JAMES DEAN PACE, b 1835 in Lawrence Co, TN, to THOMAS PACE and MARY HENDRIX PACE, who married there in 1833. She was prob. The daughter of WILLIAM HENDRIX (who died before 1840) and she was the dau. of SARAH PACE, b 1790 SC. THOMAS PACE was the son of WILLIAM PACE, b ca 1775 (where?) and SARAH FRAZIER PACE, b 1780, prob. MS. She was supposed to be 1/2 Choctaw, and so far, the records indicate that might be true (her father was WILLIAM FRAZIER, who lived in the Yalobusha area of MS.) James D. did die in Benton Co., in 1906, and left several children. He also had living siblings at the time of his death. Thanks for listening! Gale Pace Judkins.
Gale also pointed out that I had used AK instead of AR in my genealogy. I have corrected this in the attached genealogy. My reply to Gale was, in part, as follows:
Date 98-07-01 15:01:45 EDT from siriuspace@aol.com
In regard to James D. or O. Pace, I have two sources showing CHRISTOPHER STUMP PACE's son as JAMES O. PACE. A photocopy of a biography of Christopher by Barbara Hinshaw Johnson from a history of Benton County, shows JAMES O. PACE. Sarah Teel's genealogy (sarah@teelfamily.com) shows JAMES OLIVER PACE. The Benton County Pioneer magazine, July 1965, has a detailed genealogy of SAMUEL WOODS, which shows JAMES D. PACE. This last source also shows JAMES D. PACE m 9/30/1866 to LINA C. FRASE in Benton Co. So it is clear that Christopher's son James is not the same as JAMES DEAN PACE.
The page with the biography of Christopher Pace also has a biography of James Dean Pace which concludes with this: "It is believed that James Dean Pace is a descendant of the Richard Pace of the family that settled at Pace's Landing near Williamsbury, VA. The settlement was destroyed by an Indian raid."
Bye for now, Gordon William Pace
Gale replied:
Date 98-07-01 18:45:58 EDT from gjudkins@avsia.com
As for the article in the Benton Co History (by Artie Pace) regarding JAMES DEAN PACE, it was written by a distant cousin, a greatgrandson of J. D., and he admitted to me after he had submitted it, that he had learned a lot more about the family after the submission, and realized his article was sketchy. His reference to believing there was a relationship between James Dean and the Richard of Jamestown in the 1600's [was] only a conjecture on his part. Artie Pace was a member for a long time of the Pace Society. Gale.

Dear Roy:
Recent correspondence and Email from Terry Pace of Cookeville, TN and Clint Pace PACE@mailhost.netdot.com have apparently solved the mystery of who my ancestor WILLIAM PACE (m to ANN CAIN) is. His full name is WILLIAM RICHARD PACE, SR. and he descends from HARDY PACE (b 1735) and LUCY THOMAS, from WILLIAM PACE and CELIA BOYKIN. This line has been well documented back to RICHARD PACE of Jamestown. Clint's info reportedly comes from the Pace Society of America and from the book "The Pace Family, 1607 to 1750" by Terrell and Turner. I have not seen the supporting evidence yet, and will remain somewhat skeptical until I do. Following is Clint Pace's Email.

information I got primarily from the Pace Society. William (b 1800 TN)
Pace was my ggggf. His sons, Gideon Gordon, Elijah(my gggf) A., and
Henning Ausley all fought for the Confederacy in Parson's Cavalry, Co A.

RICHARD PACE & ISABELLA SMYTHE
GEORGE PACE & SARAH MAYCOCK
RICHARD PACE & MARY ?BAKER

WILLIAM PACE b1714 d1777 & CELIA BOYKIN
HARDY PACE b1735 d1792 & LUCY THOMAS

Clint left out three of the daughters of WILLIAM RICHARD PACE, SR: SALLY (SARAH) PACE, MARTHA PATSY PACE and MARY PACE. The full names of two of the sons are shown by Terry Pace as GIDEON G. PACE, and JOHN RICHARD PACE. William is probably WILLIAM RICHARD PACE, JR. Cally is has been shown as CALLIE PACE, CASSIE PACE or LEATTY PACE in different sources.

Dear Gordon,
I recently found the Pace Network and I believe that I may be a descendant of WILLIAM PACE and ANN CAIN. One of my g grandfathers was LEONARD P. STEWART who was born in Cheatham Co, TN on Feb 8, 1845. According to a short biography in Goodspeed Histories, Leonard, in 1870, married MARTHA A. PACE who was born in Montgomery Co, TN in 1847. The 1850 census for Montgomery Co includes at p 301 a Sept 6, 1850 entry for the following household:
WILLIAM H. PACE, age 29, JUDITH PACE, age 25, JOHN PACE, age 8, MARTHA PACE, age 6, SALLY PACE, age 3, ANGELINE PACE, age 1.
This WILLIAM H. PACE and JUDITH PACE appear to correlate exactly with the WILLIAM HACKNEY PACE and his wife JUDITH PARDUE who appear in your genealogy of WILLIAM PACE, SR and ANN CAIN. I realize, however, that Martha's year of birth in the census record is three years older than that in the biography. However, the Goodspeed History was published in 1886 by which time she was at least 39 years old and possibly not adverse to shaving a few years off her age.
I would appreciate any confirmation which you might offer as to MARTHA A. PACE's parents. I would also appreciate any data available on WILLIAM PACE, SR and ANN CAIN, their ancestors and descendants, which is not part of their Pace Network genealogy.

It is clear from my info that your MARTHA A. PACE is the daughter of WILLIAM HACKNEY PACE. You will notice from my recent post that WILLIAM PACE, SR, husband of ANN CAIN, is descended from GEORGE PACE and RICHARD PACE of Jamestown.

Dear Paulette or Chris:
This is a reply to your query on the Pace Family Queries of 7/7/97. Oliver WOODS is one of my ggg grandfathers. Information from Gale Judkins gjudkins@avsia.com has confirmed most of the following information. John WOODS b 1730. His son was Oliver WOODS b 10/15/1784, d 1863 (from NC?) m Nancy HAYNES b 3/5/1784, m 12/1/1807 in Williamson Co, TN.
Margaret Mariah WOODS (not Martha!), daughter of Oliver, b 2/24/1815 in Rowan Co TN, d 6/23/1895, m Christopher Stump PACE, b 12/29/1809 in Davidson Co, TN, d 4/19/1892.
The parents of Christopher Stump PACE were Alsey PACE, b 1781, d 12/13/1815, m. Salley Alice STUMP on 8/17/1808.
It appears that the siblings of Christopher Stump PACE included Edmond PACE, b 1810, d 1874, Sicely Walker PACE b ca 1808, m Samuel WOODS ca 1828.
This sibling relationship is unconfirmed. I need to check with Sarah Teel (sarah@teelfamily.com) to confirm it, so don't quote me.
The children of Christopher Stump PACE were: Sarah A. Lucy PACE b 1832, m ? BLACK, Capt. Milton A. PACE b 1837 d 1926, m Mary Jane MAXWELL, William Christopher Jr. PACE b 8/20/1838 d 4/12/1883, m Loretta Amelia HAYDEN in 1863. (This one is a little questionable - If his father was Christopher why would the son be William Christopher Jr.), Newton Berry PACE, b 1842, James O. PACE, b 1845, Thomas J. PACE, b 1840, Alfred PACE b 1846, Nancy PACE b 1848, Lourina Louise PACE b ? (spelling of this name is uncertain), and finally JOHN H. PACE b 6/8/1831 d ca 1910, m Florence HAYDEN (John H. PACE is my great grandfather.)
The Family Tree of Sarah TEEL, which includes the above persons, includes the following PACEs who may be siblings of John Milton PACE, Sr, my grandfather and son of John H. PACE: Charles PACE b 1/21/1875 d ca 1/31/1875 10 days old.
Caroline Boyd PACE b 10/12/1879 d 12/7/1956 m William TEEL, Edward Arthur PACE b 3/8/1871 d 4/12/1945 m Rachel Andrea BROWDEN, Ernest Hardy PACE b 3/7/1877 d 12/19/1940 m Nell JOHNSON, m 1902, Eva Virginia PACE b 12/30/1872 d 11/1/1939,James Alfred PACE b 10/6/1866 d 12/5/1940, m Augusta JESSIE, Lillian PACE b 8/20/1865 d 9/26/1938 m J David MOORE, William Hayden PACE b 12/22/1868 d 6/20/1952 m Annie Lydia DOWNING m 1898.
I need to confirm with Sarah TEEL that these are actual siblings of John Milton PACE, Sr.
John Milton PACE, Sr b 1870 in Maysville, AK d 6/23/1949 in Portland, OR m Etta Estella WARD b 2/10/1878 AK, d 1953 Portland, OR.
The children of John Milton PACE, Sr were Gladys PACE, Elma Pace, Harold PACE and John Milton PACE, Jr, my father, b 7/6/1909 Choteau, OK m Esther Marie TIFFANY b 1/3/1917 Portland, OR.
Other children of Oliver WOODS and Nancy Haynes were Samuel WOODS b 11/7/1808, m Sicily Walker PACE, m ca 1828, lived in Lawrence Co, MO, and John Blackburn WOODS b 2/10/1811 m Martha H. PACE in Lawrence Co. I have no idea who Martha H. PACE is.
I am searching for the origin of William PACE b ca 1746 (the father of Alsey PACE) who may have married Ann CAIN. My only other info is that he married in 1767 and died 1845 in TN.
If this information is useful to you please let me know and I will follow up when I confirm the information that is still questionable.

1. SAMUEL WOODS born 7 Nov 1808 married SICELY WALKER PACE ca 1828. Lived in Lawrence County, MO.
2. JOHN BLACKBURN WOODS born 10 Feb 1811 married MARTHA H. PACE. Lived in Lawrence County, MO.

In reply to your inquiry of 97-7-7 on the PaceNetWkrk, if it's any help, or for interest:- MARY ANN PACE, my grandfather's sister...(CHARLES VICARAGE PACE - 1871 -1926) married into the HAYNES family,........now a large family in LONDON, Ontario, Canada.
The origin was County of STAFFORDSHIRE, England. where they got married before emmigration There is a HAYNES in the town of STAFFORD with an internet address:...kbowers@interlog.com From a search...England, genealogy or England, family tree....I got:- www.Staffordshire.gov.uk....and eventually...Staffordshire Look/up Exchange page...listed are several people who volenteer to look up records.I was in Stafford in '94; it's great, a genealogist's haven. .
I have two booklets from the Staffordshire County Council, libraries, arts & archives Department on procedure and where certain records can be found, etc.
I'm researching PACE - SQUIRE - HAYNES - ELLIOTT - EMERY,...lots of fun.
They all had their origins in Staffordshire & Yorkshire, England,...... any info, I'd be glad to hear........ EMERYs married PACEs and went to Toledo, Ohio.
I can imagine the fun you've had in 23 years. Nice talking to you! Gordon Thomas Pace
Gordon Pace of Portland, OR (hard to keep them straight) found Pace information on Sarah Teel's family web site and corresponded with her as follows:

Dear Sarah:
I just discovered your Website and I am so excited because it is the biggest breakthrough I have made in my genealogical research. You expressed concern about your info re the Oliver Woods family. Oliver WOODS is one of my ggg grandfathers. The info I have is from research from a great aunt and from Gale Judkins gjudkins@avsia.com.
John WOODS was born 1730. His son was Oliver WOODS b 10/15/1784, d 1863 (from NC?) m Nancy HAYNES b 3/5/1784, m 12/1/1807 in Williamson Co, TN.
Margaret Mariah WOODS, daughter of Oliver, b 2/24/1815 in Rowan Co TN, d 6/23/1895, m Christopher Stump PACE, b 12/29/1809 in Davidson Co TN, d 4/19/1892.
Other children of Oliver and Nancy were Samuel WOODS, b 11/7/1808, who married Sicily Walker PACE ca 1828. They lived in Lawrence Co, TN, and John Blackburn WOODS b 2/10/1811, who married Martha H. PACE in Lawrence Co MO. (I know nothing about Martha PACE.)
The parents of Christopher Stump PACE were Alsey PACE b 1781, d 12/13/1815?, m Salley Alice STUMP on 8/17/1808. The date of death of Alsey PACE is incorrect as he received a land grant in Benton Co, AK in 1843, a few years before his son received grants in the same area.
From the index of names on your Website it appears that the siblings of Christopher Stump PACE may have included Edmond PACE, b 1810, d 1874 and Sicely Walker PACE b ca 1808, m Samuel WOODS ca 1828. I have no info re the siblings of Christopher, so could you please advise whether this is correct?
The children of Christopher Stump PACE were: Sarah A. Lucy PACE b 1832, m ? BLACK, Capt. Milton A. PACE b 1837 d 1926, m Mary Jane MAXWELL, Newton Berry PACE, b 1842, James O. PACE, b 1845, Thomas J. PACE is my great grandfather.)
You also list William Christopher Jr PACE. In Emmet Starr's book on History of the Cherokee Indians I found the following: William Christopher Jr. PACE b 8/20/1838 m Loretta Hayden, m 1863. Their son was William Hayden PACE b 1868 in Benton Co, AK, m Annie Lydia Downing b 9/10/1871 (Saline District) m 12/22/1898. Their children were Alfred Collins PACE b 8/7/1909, Elbert Edward PACE b 11/21/1899, Hayden Adair PACE b 2/19/1901, Clyde Lewis PACE b 11/30/1902, Joe Sheldon PACE b 6/14/1904, Loretta Lucille PACE b 1/15/1906, Howard PACE b 10/5/1907. Can you tell if and how this line is related to mine?
Your Family Tree, which includes the above persons, includes the following PACEs who may be siblings of John Milton PACE, Sr, my grandfather and son of John H. PACE: Charles PACE b 1/21/1875 d ca 1/31/1875, 10 days old, Caroline Boyd PACE b 10/12/1879 d 12//7/1956 m William TEEL, Edward Arthur PACE b 3/8/1871 d 4/12/1945 m Rachel Andrea BROWDEN, Ernest Hardy PACE b 3/7/1877 d 12/19/1940, m Nell JOHNSON, m 1902, Eva Virginia PACE b 12/30/1872 d 11/1/1939, James Alfred PACE b 10/6/1866 d 12/5/1940, m Augusta JESSIE, Lillian PACE b 8/20/1865 d 9/26/1938 m J. David MOORE, William Hayden PACE b 12/22/1868 d 6/20/1952 m Annie Lydia DOWNING m 1898.
Could you please advise whether the above are the children of John H. PACE?
John Milton PACE, Sr b 1870 in Maysville, AK d 6/23/1949 in Portland, OR, m Etta Estella WARD b 2/10/1878 AK, d 1953 in Portland, OR.
The children of John Milton PACE, Sr were Gladys PACE, Elva PACE, Harold PACE and John Milton PACE, Jr, my father, b 7/6/1909 in Choteau, OK, m Esther Marie TIFFANY b 1//3/1917 Portland, OR.
I am searching for the origin of William PACE b ca 1746 (the father of Alsey PACE) who may have married Ann CAIN. Your info shows William PACE was born in 1767. My unconfirmed info shows William PACE marrying in 1767 and d 1845 in TN. Can you clarify this? I noticed that the PASCOEs in your index do not have any dates. Do you think the PACE name could have evolved from PASCOE? Finally, I could not find any direct references in your genealogical lines to the WOODs, PACEs and HAYNEs. Could you explain how they are related? The resolution of these questions are crucial to my genealogical research, so I eagerly await your reply.

Dear Roy:
I noticed that you have not posted my recent query yet. That's good because I would like to update it. Please post the following instead:
In reviewing the "Descendants of Oliver Woods" provided by Sarah Teel, I found that some of my speculations in my queries to Paulette Haynes and Sarah were incorrect. Her information confirms that WILLIAM CHRISTOPHER PACE, JR was a son of CHRISTOPHER STUMP PACE. The following Paces are NOT the children of JOHN H. PACE, they are the children of WILLIAM CHRISTOPHER PACE, JR: CHARLES PACE, CAROLINE BOYD PACE, EDWARD ARTHUR PACE, ERNEST HARDY PACE, JAMES ALFRED PACE, LILLIAN PACE, WILLIAM HAYDEN PACE, and EVA VIRGINIA PACE. EDMOND ALSEY PACE (b 1810) is a brother of CHRISTOPHER STUMP PACE and SICELY WALKER PACE (b ca 1808) is a daughter of HENNING PACE. I have just learned recently that HENNING PACE (b ca 1776) AND WILLIAM PACE, JR (b ca 1780) are brothers of ALSEY PACE (b 1781). I am still looking for the parents of WILLIAM PACE (b ca 1746) and his wife ANN CAIN. It appears they came from North Carolina.

Dear Dina:
The answer to your query of 6-16-98 on the Pace Network New Queries is contained in the query itself. Since HENNING PACE (b ca 1776) is a brother of ALSEY PACE and WILLIAM PACE, JR., it follows that the relationships between SICELY WALKER PACE, MARTHA HARRIS PACE, CHRISTOPHER STUMP PACE, and the WOODS family are quite clear. I have attached a genealogy which should clear up any confusion you have. If you have any difficulty reading the attachment please let me know.
