Subj: Update & question Date: 98-07-26 01:39:57 EDT
From: leenclay@sprynet.com (LEE PACE)
On 6-26-97, I submitted a query searching for my late husband's family. Hardy Pace, etc. I've never received a response of any kind, maybe a little updating will help. First, I'd appreciate it if you'd change the e-mail to Lee Pace, leenclay@sprynet.com. Next, since submitting it, I've been able to obtain Hardy's obit. He was born 3 April 1880 in Houston, TX and his parents were Hardy Pace and Marie Miller. He died, not in Norfolk although that had been his home for many years, in Temple Terrace, Hillsborough Co., Fl at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lola Sweat. He was buried at Hamlet Cemetery, Hamilton, Marin Co., NC. The name of his 2nd wife was Myrtle Girvin, she also died before he did.

Subj: Query on THOMAS PACE and CEBELL MATTHEWS Date: 98-06-25 16:27:13 EDT From: omodiset@ix.netcom.com (Opal Modisett)
Have been really searching the two books published by Pace Society as well as Southern Colonial Families by Avant trying to correlate info. I, of course, am looking for Hardy Pace's father. His mother, Susanna Hutchins Pace, Berry, Watts. Have decided His father as shown above could be father of Hardy's dad, not necessarily son, Hardy. Cebell Married a Mr. Carr and moved to Warren Co., GA. Anyone out there researching this line?

Roy, Do hope you can help me. I live the summer months in Cozumel, Mexico. It's lovely but I have 2 problems here. Both affecting my Genealogy research. (1.)I'm working down here on a 386, which is slow so (2.) the Internet loads very slow and therefore always times out just when I get to the page I want. Please understand, I'm not complaining, I only told you this so you would understand why I'm sending you an e-mail (which by the way works great) instead of placing a query on the Pace page.
I'm trying to break through my dead end. I went through it with each of the other Grandparents and finally got each of them back to the old country, but my Pace line has come to a sudden stop.
According to his obituary and death certificate, my Grandfather, Hardy Pace died in Temple Terrace, Hillsborough Co., Fla. I will quote it with my comments in parentheses." HARDY PACE,82,(b.Apr 3,1880 Houston, Harris Co.,TX) formerly of South Norfolk,(VA) died Saturday (Aug. 18, 1962)in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lola M. Sweatt of 102 Park Ridge Ave. (I wrote her at that address, it came back "addressee unknown") after a short illness.
A native of Houston, (Harris Co.), TX, he was a son of HARDY and MRS. MARIE MILLER PACE and the widow of (Minnie Sears and) Mrs. Myrtle Girvin Pace. He was a member of Arbor Grove Baptist Church and a veteran of the Spanish-American War.
Besides Mrs. Sweatt, he is survived by three other daughters. Miss Mary E. Pace(in 1962 she was working for Kimnack Ford)of Norfolk and Mrs. Geneva McCord and Mrs. Beatrice Fredrick of Woodbury, TN; six sons, Earl E. Pace of Tampa, FL, Harold E. Pace of Jacksonville,FL,(Lawrence "Dick")Delbert Pace(my line) of Celina,TN (b.1-20-1907 Indianapolis, Marion Co.,IN sp. Alice Evoline Napier m. Celina,TN d. Sep 11, 1967 Nashville, Davidson Co., TN)) and George E. Pace, Frank R. Pace(USN 1960-1964) and Cameron H. Pace of Norfolk,(VA)22 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held in ....South Norfolk, Burial....Hamlet Cemetery, Hamilton, NC.
The death certificate doesn't give any more info, not even where his mother was born.
Many thanks for the job you are doing. Anxiously awaiting your reply,

Roy,
I sent you HARDY PACE's obituary a few days ago with some of my imput. Since I sent you that, I have learned a few more tidbits if you want to include them.
* Beatrice Pace Fredrick, b. 4 Sept. 1910 was a nurse in a mental hospital for many years. She died 23 Jan. 1991, Murfreesboro, Rutherford Co., TN.
* Mary E. Pace, b. 14 Jan. 1890, never married, died June 1970, Norfolk, Norfolk Co., VA
* Lola M. Pace Sweatt, b. 10 Feb. 1909, died 12 Sept. 1991, Temple Terrace, Hillsborough Co., FL.
* Cameron H. Pace married Dorothy F. (?)
* Frank R. Pace married Nola (?)
George E. Pace married Eva C. (?). SHE was born 26 July 1918 in TN. In 1964, she was a machine operator with Southland Mfg., Norfolk, VA. She died Oct. 1972 in Norfolk, Norfolk Co., VA. Like I said just tidbits but you never know what may make the connection. I've spent sooo many hours just getting this far. Hopefully, someone will be able to add some imput.
This previous query from Julijohn Knott also relates to Hardy Pace:
The following is a short lineage which is basically a query, so I will place it on the queries page-Webmaster

7. ? Pace @1780's-? b. /d. prob. Georgia & Susanna (Susan) Hutchins 1788-1885. Susan brought self & children to Texas an unclear on the date.
I have written to my Grandfater's widow in Jasper, TX and his surviving sister, R.V. Parhan of Beaumont,TX, several times for information about Nolan Lewis Scott and have received no answers. Whether or not this is because I am his Grandchild by his previous marriage, I do not know. If anyone else is able to persuade these reticent sources of information to talk about Grandad Scott, I would be deeply appreciative.
I would like to find out who else is working on my line

Bruce Howard's response to her query:
Dear Juliejohn: The only person I am aware of that is working on your Pace line also lives in Texas. Her name is Mrs. Opal Modisett. Add. is 2001 N. Meadow Way Circle, Arlington, Texas 76015. Mrs. Modisett wrote to me a few years back and asked if I could help. I couldn't help much at all. She stated that Hardy Pace was born Oct. 7, 1807 in Georgia. She did not show that his mothers maiden name was Hutchins. I have been keeping an eye out for this family for some time now and have found absolutely nothing in the records of Georgia that would tie into what is known of this family. I can tell you this much, after the death of her Pace husband she married a man by the name of Berry, somewhere. They came to Louisiana to live and he apparently died in that state. She and her son, Hardy, were living in Ouachita Parish when she remarried to Mr. Thomas Watts on September 18, 1827. I am sure you are aware of Susan's pension application on her husbands War of 1812 service. You might have noticed that Hardy testified in that application that he was about 10 years old when his mother married Mr. Watts and that he lived with them until he married at age 20 and then lived nearby. If that is true then he would have been born in 1817, not 1807. He was very likely in error when he made that statement. Everything points to his being 20 years old when his mother remarried. Then in his obit, reported in the Texas Baptist newspaper, it states, "Hardy Pace, a citizen of Texas since 1828, died recently in Jasper Co., Texas, aged 73 years." I have to apologize to you for not making a note of the date of that paper notice. I copied it years ago while living in Texas and failed to note the date of the paper. I know this still doesn't answer the big question of who his father was, but I hope it helps a little.
Bruce.

Dear Leona, I received your snail-mail the 17th of October. I was so thrilled to receive any genealogical info that I typed in the information you sent into my genealogical database and printed it out along with my information.
I will mail it on Monday, so you will have a hard copy.
According to the information I have there is no missing generation between my Hardy Allen Pace/Mahalia Isaacs and Hardy Pace/Minnie Sears. Of course, there could be information that I am missing....namely any generations between the former and latter Hardy Paces . The information that I have comes from Beulah Pace through Diane Pace of the Pace Historical Society.
In trying to get it to export to this e-mail, I found that Hardy/Mahalia Pace's son Eli, named his son Hardy.
I'll have to add it to the other paperwork I sent you.
I know that spouses have been known to 'disappear' as children, even as old-age adults, try to hide the fact that their parents remarried. My 96-yr-old uncle on my father's side is no longer speaking to me. I felt no compunction to hide the fact that Granny Wallace remarried five years after Granddad died. Sigh.
I fear that he will burn all the treasures that he has upon his death rather than let anyone else see the truth. He has letters that pre-date the Civil War. Sigh, again.
As my Macintosh can't seem to get the Netscape and Reunion to interact nicely, you'll just have to wait until you receive the snail-mail.
I'm a spatial person and I found it useful to print up your information. Seeing ancestral information in paragraph form really confuses me. I find it makes more sense to put it into index cards or 'tree' formations.
Look forward to hearing more from you in the near future. Wishing you success in your search. Juls/end.

Juliejohn, I was glad to finally find someone else researching Hardy Pace! My direct descendants are Thomas Watts and Susanna Hutchins Pace Berry through their daughter Caroline Watts, but I have long wanted to find the names of Susanna's other two husbands. I have written to the Pace families in Jasper, but have had no response.
Susanna was b. 1788 in GA. After Hardy's father died (presumably) she married ? Berry and had two children, Seborn Berry b. 1813 and Elizabeth Berry b. 1814 both born in SC. Susanna and Thomas were married in Ouachita Parish LA in 1815 (not in 1827 as cited in some sources). Thomas and Susan had four children born in LA: Hiram (who married an Elizabeth L. Pace), Emiline, Thomas Jr, and Rebecca. They moved to Jasper TX in 1825 (as stated in Thomas' character certificate for admittance to the Mexican Province) and had 5 more children: Solomon, Susan, William, Caroline, and Thales.
I obtained information from Mr. Robert Conn of Kirbeyville TX, a series of newspaper articles published in the Kirbeyville Banner titled "Early Settlers in Jasper County," the research of Mr. Thomas Mulligan of Corpus Christi TX, census records, the book "More Early Southeast Texas Families" by Madeleine Martin, and the 1835 census of Texas.
In the newspaper articles there is mention of Hardy owning a home in Vinings GA during the Civil War that was occupied by the Northerners and used as a Federal hospital, but I have a feeling the writer had him mixed up with one of the other Hardy Paces of that era.
I would like to hear from you and compare notes.
