 Myrtle Mircell Oxford

Myrtle Mircell Oxford was born February 14, 1900 Wofle City Texas, Fannin County. Myrtle was adopted by John C Oxford and Almeadie. According to Great Aunt Ada Oxford Bratton Myrtle was the daughter of an Oxford woman and her father was a married man named MIRCELL. Myrtle's real father was Joshua Merrell who died of Pneumonia. The Merrell could easily have been a misspelling of Mircell. Her mother's name was Mary Puckett. I don't know if that was a maiden name or a married name. This information was given to me, I believe, by my aunt Twana. Ron

Myrtle marriad at the age of 15 to James Veal a nephew of Almeadie Veal Oxford, little is known about this marriage. Then Myrtle married Zoolo Carr in 1918 born October 08, 1876. Zoolo prior marriage was to Myrtles sister Beulah A. Oxford.. Myrtle is listed on the 1910 Wilson, Atoka County, Oklahoma Census with John C. Oxford and Almeadie. After Beulah's death Zoolo and Myrtle were married and they raised the children together, later moving to the Purcell/ Lexington area of Oklahoma.

Below is some history that Ron had written

Zoolo Carr b. 10-8-1876 was the son of Mary Ann Jopling Ormand Carr who
was the daughter of George Brown Jopling(forgive me for not giving their
dates. I don't have them in front of me). Zoolo was married to Beula
Oxford who died during childbirth before 1918. After her death, Zoolo
was left with five children (Marvin, Gorsie, Myrlie, Garten and Anna
Mae). Before Beula's death her half sister Myrtle Oxford b. 2-14-1900
had moved in to help take care of the children. In 1918 Zoolo and
Myrtle married in Chattanooga, Oklahoma. Also in 1918, the Carr's farm
went bankrupt and a Banker friend of the family recommended that they
move Northeast to the Purcell/Lexington, OK area because the land was
more fertile. So they packed up their team of mules (Billy and Jack)
and their wagon with Myrtle and Garten following in her one horse, black
fringed surry. They traveled for weeks and finally made it to the South
Canadian River, which runs between Purcell and Lexington.

When they got there, they found that there was a toll bridge to cross.
It cost 25 cents to take the team across and another 25 cents for the
Surry and 10 cents if you wanted to walk across. Zoolo paid the money
and tried to take the mule team across first. But, Billy and Jack did
not want anything to do with this bridge. Zoolo was a BIG rough and
rugged man(6ft. 4in. 260lb.). He was not the nicest person to these
mules and stories passed down from family said the mules did not like
him and would buck and bite him every chance they got. He tried
whipping the mules and everything else he could think of to try and get
them across but they would not budge. About that time a voice yelled
out, "HEY RED!!!" "The water is shallow you can try to cross from the
bank of the river." Now Garten (my grandfather who goes by the nickname
Red Carr) was the cutest little red headed 8 year old you could ever
imagine. Garten leaned over to Myrtle and said, "Momma, how did that
man know my name???" Myrtle just laughed until she was in tears.

Anyway, Zoolo crossed the team from the bank of the river and fought
with Billy and Jack all the way across nearly drowning the whole
family. Well, that is one of the many stories that I have to tell and I
guess I will leave it at that.
