Elias Oxford

Elias Oxford believed born c. 1830, location unknown. John S. Oxford born in 1816, location unknown. (Court document reflects John S. was 53 yrs old in Jan 1869) Also noted in court documents is that John S Oxford is the brother to Elias Oxford. Charlotte left Elias before William was born and divorced Elias on March 15,

Charlotte in November 1852 near Elias' residence, and William was subsequently cared for by John S. and wife, Minerva. (Sworn statement from court documents in Iroquois County, IL)

Elias and Francis (surname, b. date & location unknown, but in 1891 married name was Lee) lived as unmarried man & wife beginning in 1852 until birth of Edwin Racilllus Oxford (my grandfather) on March 1, 1853, in Vermillion county, IN. Elias acknowledged paternity but bound Edwin R. out to James M. Owen in September 1853, and Owen subsequently raised Edwin. (General Affidavits filed in Vigo County, IN, by Francis Lee, and in Vermillion County, IN, by James M. Owen and Lafayette Newell) Edwin died on Mar 22, 1922, in Terre Haute, Vigo County, IN, and is buried in Helts Prarie Cemetary, Vermillion County, IN (Death Certificate)

Elias Oxford joined the 20th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, Company "H", on July 22, 1861, at Lafayette, IN. His unit was transported to Baltimore and then to Cape Hatterass, NC, to reprovision a Union Fort. He was taken prisoner when the gunboat "Fanny" was captured at Chickamacomico, NC, on Oct 4, 1861, taken to several different Confederate prisons and ending in Richmond, VA. He was "paroled" by CSA in early spring 1862 and made his way to Washington, D.C., arriving there on May 12, 1862. He died on May 18, 1862, of "consumption" and is buried in Washington, D.C. National Cemetery.

(Military records and statement of John H. Andrews, a soldier who was with him, filed in court documents in Iroquois County, IL)

My hope is that other "Oxfords" might lead me to further lineage of Elias and John S. I also hope that descendents of William R. and/or Emeline might contact me.

At some point I also want to search for Morton Oxford (born c. 1880 possibly in Vermillion county, IN) the oldest son of Edwin R., and a half brother of my father. After a family disagreement about 1900, he left vowing not to return. He made contact once in 1905-06 relating that he lived in Olympia, Washington, and was married with children.
