Descendants of Richard S. Oxford

Generation No. 1

RICHARD S.1 OXFORD was born 1841, and died Abt. 1872. He married LOUISA JANE STRACENER (STRAYSON) February 11, 1864 in Hopkins Co., Texas, daughter of GEORGE STRACENER and LYDIA CAPPS, Upshur Co., TX.

Notes for RICHARD S. OXFORD:

According to Claudine Woodard, my cousin, our great-grandfather Richard Oxford moved to Upshur Co., TX, from Prescott, Arkansas. However, when I researched census records for Arkansas/1860, he did not appear in the census.

04/10/97 In researching the 1860 Texas census, looking for a Richard Oxford, not as a head of household, but as a dependent, I found a Richard Oxford (b. abt. 1843, Arkansas), 17-yr-old son of Malinda Oxford (47), who reported that she was born in Arkansas (abt.1813). Another son was listed in the 1860 census, brother of Richard, Washington Oxford (11), born abt. 1849, also Arkansas. This Oxford family lived in Lamar Co. (Paris TX area). There was no male head of household listed, so I'm assuming she was a widow or deserted. Since my grandfather's name was Wm. Geo. Washington Oxford, I thought perhaps it was a family name, being named after his uncle, perhaps even his grandfather. Given the accuracy (or lack of it) in the information submitted by James Michael Tubre, my g-grandfather may have been born in 1843, instead of 1841, as reported.

Linda Oxford of Oxford Bend, AR, contacted me by e-mail to relate that a William Oxford married a Malinda Clark, 18 May 1832, Cape Girardeau Co., MO. She wondered if this Malinda might be the same Malinda Oxford in the 1860 Lamar Co. Tx Census records.

She conjectured that she would have been about 19, if born @ 1813, as suggested by the census records. Linda said this was "the only Malinda marrying an OXFORD in all the eastern and southern United States...recorded." 20 Oct 1998

James Michael Tubre submitted that Richard Oxford was born 1841, TX. He also submitted the names of Richard's other children. James M. Tubre is the grandson of George Lee Oxford, son of John Alexander Oxford, son of Richard Oxford. His mother, Frances Oxford Tubre, is the daughter of George Lee Oxford. In talking to her, their farm adjoins the land on which Grice Church and Cemetery are located in Upshur Co.

In the 1900 Texas census records, I found Richard's three sons, all living in Upshur Co.

John lived in precinct #1. He was a farmer. He reported his father's state of birth as Texas.

Thomas lived in precinct #3. He also was a farmer, owning his own farm. He reported his father's state of birth as Missouri. George also lived in precinct #3, where he also farmed, owning his own farm. He reported his father's birth-state as Alabama.

In the 1910 Texas census records, Thomas still lived in Upshur Co. He owned his own farm by then and had 3 more children. He apparently was not sure where his father was born, because in 1910, he reported that he was born in the United States. George had moved from Upshur Co. in 1903 to Wood Co., where he owned his own farm. He now reported that his father had been born in Texas. I found no record of John in the 1910 census records, but much of them was illegible.

In the 1920 census for Upshur Co., TX, John and his wife Mattie had only one son, Henry, remaining at home. They lived west of Gilmer. He now reported his father's birth-state as Tennessee. His two sons George and William were married by 1920 and maintained separate households, also in Upshur Co., west of Gilmer. His brother Thomas still lived in Upshur Co., in the Cross Roads community (Precinct #3), with his wife Ola and their five children. Thomas reported that Texas was his father's state of birth in these 1920 records.

On Papa's death certificate, his father's name was recorded as R. S. Oxford, not R. J. Oxford.

Notes for LOUISA JANE STRACENER:

At Enon Cemetery on FM 556 off of FM 852 in Upshur Co., TX, I found several gravestones of the Stracener family:

M. Lou Stracener, 10/24/1864 - 2/13/1941;

Mary Jane Stracener, daughter of HW and ME Stracener, died 10/20/1878,at the age of 3 months and 28 days;

Hiram W. Stracener, Co. E, 14 Texas Cav. C. S. A, 2/7/1841 - 6/28/1927, so he apparently served the Confederacy during the Civil War;

Mary E. Stracener, 5/20/1848 - 2/1/1902.

I don't know if they are any relation to Louiz(s)a Stracener or not.

James Michael Tubre submitted that Richard Oxford was born 1841, TX; Spouse, Elizabeth Stracener, rather than Louisa or Louiza. A marriage license was recorded in Hopkins Co., TX, for Richard Oxford and Louisa J. Strayson, instead of Louiza J. Stracener. (Hopkins County Marriage Records, 1846-1880, by Frances Terry Ingmire)

According to Stracener relatives, Louisa Jane Stracener Oxford married a Rufus Tucker after Richard S. Oxford died. Delores Culbert, a descendant of Thomas M. Oxford, told me she was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Upshur Co. On Saturday Feb. 27, 1999, I drove to Oak Hill Cemetery in Bettie TX on FM2088. I found a grave for L. J., wife of R. H. Tucker, Feb. 14 1847 - Mar 04, 1900, next to the graves of Lydia Stracener and George W. Stracener.

Generation No. 2

2. WILLIAM GEORGE WASHINGTON2 OXFORD (RICHARD S.1) was born March 27, 1865 in Hopkins Co., Texas(?), and died March 01, 1957 in Quitman, Wood Co., Texas. He married (1) LUDA BEULAH IRENE STEVENS November 11, 1891 in Prescott, Arkansas, daughter of SAMUEL STEVENS and SARAH HACKLER of Fannin Co, TX. He married (2) DELLA EDGAR Aft. 1939.

Notes for WILLIAM GEORGE WASHINGTON OXFORD:

In a telephone interview with Claudine Oxford Woodard (granddaughter of William George Washington Oxford), she related the following information to me in August, 1992.

Richard Oxford was the father of William George Washington Oxford, known by us as "Papa." Richard Oxford married Louiza Jane Stracener, who was Papa's mother. Their marriage license was recorded in Hopkins county, February 11, 1864, where her name was recorded as Louisa J. Strayson, rather than Stracener. (I found several graves in the Stracener family at Enon Cemetery on FM Road 556 off of FM Road 852 in Upshur Co., TX)

According to Claudine, they moved to Upshur County. The Oxford Family Bible recorded Papa's birthday on March 27, 1865. The Bible was in the possession of one of our aunts; it was destroyed in a fire.

Rumor has it that Papa killed two men at Gilmer, in Upshur County, or Prescott, Arkansas, supposedly one black man and one white man. The reasons behind these events are as yet unknown. One of the killings was ruled to be in self-defense. The other was ruled as murder, and Papa was sent to the penitentiary. He escaped from prison, was caught, and returned. He then escaped the second time and was never caught. One version of the story is that when he was returned to prison after the first escape, he finished serving his time and was then released.

However, according to family legend, he always lived with the fear of being apprehended. In later years, his sons had to be careful when coming home late at night to make sure Papa knew who it was coming in, because he always slept with a loaded gun under his pillow.

In the volume, "Marriages: Nevada County, Arkansas," published by the Hempstead County Genealogical Society, pg. 140, "G. W. Oxford, 24, of Fairley, Hunt Co., Texas to L. B. Stephens, 18, of Failrey, Hunt Co., Texas on 11 Nov 1891 by John Arnold, Mayor of Prescott," was recorded. According to the family Bible, on November 11, 1891, Papa married Ludie Beulah Irene Stevens, daughter of Samuel Stevens and Sarah Hackler Stevens, in Prescott, Arkansas. My sister, LaVell Willis, and I went to Prescott, Ark., to research courthouse records. We obtained a copy of their marriage certificate while there. Ludie Beulah Irene Stevens was born December 11, 1876. Her birth was recorded in Fannin County (Bonham, TX). Papa was 26; she was a month shy of 15. However, on the marriage license she reported her age as 18, and Papa reported his age as 24. She was reportedly raised around Quinlan in Fannin County. They had fourteen children. In 1903, they moved to Wood County.

* * * * * * * * * *

According to the 1900 Texas Census records, Papa and his two brothers all lived in Upshur county along with their families. Papa was a farmer, owning his own farm in Upshur Co., and then in Wood Co.

Papa listed Texas as his father's place of birth in the 1910 census, but he had reported Alabama as his father's place of birth in the 1900 census. According to the 1910 Texas census for Wood Co., Papa

(G. W.) and his wife Ludie (Luda) lived in Precinct 1, the Oak Grove community. Their homeplace was about 5 miles east of Quitman on Highway 154, on the left, less than a mile before you come to the intersection of FM14. As of 1910, they had 6 children living at home: Tom (16), Richard (14), Etta (12), Bessie (6), Deallia (or Dela, 4), and Montene (7 months). He was a farmer.

In the 1920 Texas census, Papa again reported Texas as the state where his father was born.

Grandma Oxford (Ludie) died February 24, 1939 and was buried at Ebenezer Cemetery in Wood County, east of Quitman on FM14. After her death, Papa remarried. His new wife was known as

"Miss Della." They had no children.

* * * * * * * * * *

Papa was probably the first-born child of Richard and Louisa Oxford since their marriage was recorded in 1864, and Papa was born in 1865. They had a second son, named Tom, who lived in Upshur Co., around Gilmer, and a third son, John, who was married to a woman called Mattie. Papa was very secretive by nature, perhaps because he was an escaped convict, or for whatever other reasons. He and his family seldom ever had any contact with his family. Mother recalled that one time, they got word that Papa's brother Tommy in Gilmer was very ill, close to death, so that she and Daddy took Papa to Gilmer to see his brother before he died.

Geo. W. Oxford is buried at Ebenezer Cemetery on FM Road 14 in Wood Co., Tx.

Notes for DELLA EDGAR:

Miss Della, as the family called her, was married before she married Papa. She was buried at Kelsey, off Hwy 154, west of Gilmer. One mile south on FM1795 is a Kelsey Cemetery. I visited Kelsey on Sat.,

Aug. 8, 1998. Most of the graves were new there, with new headstones. However, there were some graves dating back to the 1890's. There were still more unmarked graves, or marked with large iron-ore rocks.

She and/or her family of origin owned all that land in there, according to Mother. Whenever they wanted to go to Montana and observe some Mormon ritual, they would sell off enough land to earn the money to go, and would form a wagon train. Just north of the cemetery is a historical marker, giving the background of the Kelsey community for Mormons. A man named Edgar and another man were attributed with having bought a large tract of land in that region for a Mormon settlement.

At the Wood County Courthouse, County Clerk's office, a death certificate was recorded for a "Rodella Oxford," #3356, 04/03/1946, filed 04/06/1946. I wondered if Miss Della's name was Rodella. I have no record of any Rodella Oxford in my family tree at this time.

Miss Della, as the family called her, was married before she married Papa. She was buried at Kelsey off highway 154, west of Gilmer.

Notes for JOHN ALEXANDER OXFORD:

Information supplied by James Michael Tubre, son of Frances Oxford Tubre, Rosewood, Upshur Co. TX.

John Alexander Oxford was buried at Grice Cemetery, Upshur Co., TX.

John Oxford lived in Upshur county, Precinct #1, according to the 1900 Texas census, along with his wife and three children, at that time. She had given birth to four children, with only the three surviving.

John reported his father's place of birth as Texas in the 1900 census. The 1910 census was illegible in many places, and I never found John in the 1910 census records. However, I found him again in the 1920 census for Upshur Co., and he reported his father's place of birth as Tennessee then. According to the 1920 census for Upshur Co., TX, John A, and his wife Mattie had only one child remaining at home, their son Henry (17). They were dwelling #118, family #121. Adjacent to them in dwelling #117, was family #120, W. W. Oxford. I wondered if this was his son, William W. This W. W. Oxford reported his age to be 22, which would be about right, if he had been born in Sept. 1897, at the time the census was taken (01/29/1920). He would not have had his 23rd birthday yet. A wife's initials were listed: B. E. (17).

George Lee Oxford was dwelling #110, family #113. His reported age was 24. His wife's name was not legible, but her age was listed as 18 at the time.

He married (2) ZULA STEELMAN December 24, 1935 in Upshur Co., TX, Cert # 13951. He married (3) LILLY ZETTY October 23, 1938 in Upshur Co., TX, Cert # 12341.

Notes for THOMAS M. OXFORD:

In a conversation with Mother (Verna Oxford), 8/25/96, she mentioned that Papa (Geo. W. Oxford) had a brother who lived in Gilmer. After Verna and L. B. married, they got word that L. B.'s "Uncle Tommy" was sick, in bad health. They took Papa to Gilmer to see him.

According to the Texas Census records for 1900 and 1910, a Thomas Oxford, with wife Ola, and children of the same names as Mother recalled, lived in Upshur County in Precinct 1, outside Gilmer.

In the 1900 census, Thomas Oxford reported his father's place of birth as Missouri. Then in the 1910 census, he just said he was born in the United States. Thomas was a farmer; he owned his own farm. At the time of the 1910 census, Thomas lived in Upshur Co. with his wife Ola and four children: Anona (13), Arvilla (9), Leston (or Lester, 6), and Marion, a son (2).

In the 1920 census, Thomas still lived in Upshur Co. with his wife Ola and their five children in the Cross Roads community, Precinct #3. He reported that his father had been born in Texas. Thomas still owned his own farm.

When I visited Enon Cemetery (NE of Gilmer), I found a grave marked Thomas Regless Oxford, born 10/27/1917, died 07/02/1990. Mother recalled that Daddy's uncle Tommy had a son they called Regless. In the 1920 Texas census records, I found a Thomas R. Oxford, son of Thomas M. Oxford.

Tom M. Oxford is buried at Soule's Chapel cemetery, off FM2088, Upshur Co., TX. The dates recorded on his tombstone were September 10, 1871 - May 25, 1956. His wife's grave was next to his.

In the Upshur County Marriage records, there was also a marriage listed for a T. "N." Oxford to a Frances Clements, 03 Jun 1948. I don't know who T N Oxford might be, and wondered if might have been a transcription error.

06/02/1999

Wood County Courthouse, County Clerk's Office, records a marriage for Tom M. Oxford to Flora Edwards, 10/11/1937, Cert. #11165, Vol. K, pg. 271. I wondered if this could be the same Thomas Oxford.

At Soule's Chapel cemetery, off FM2088 in Upshur Co., next to Arvilla Poole's gravesite was a grave marked Anna Oxford Vaughn, "Sister," September 26, 1892 - June 22, 1955. I wondered if this Anna was the same as Anona.

In Upshur Co. Clerk's office, a marriage was recorded for Anna Oxford to E. S. VAUGHN, Cert/ID#14047, 14 Mar 1936.

At Soules Chapel Cemetery, close to Tom M. Oxford's grave, was another grave, marked Virginia Ann Oxford, 3/14/1933 - 11/24/1933. I wondered if perhaps she could have been the daugher of Thomas Regless Oxford.

According to Delores Culbert, a descendant of Thomas M. Oxford, Virginia Ann was the daughter of Thomas Regless Oxford. However, according to Upshur Co. death records, Virginia Ann was the daughter of Joseph M. Oxford, which would have made her a sister to Delores (or half-sister).

Letter from Hassie Lee (Cooper) Parzl to Clyte (Oxford) Osburn:

September 16, 1996

Dear Aunt Clytie,

It was so good to hear from you after all these years. It's hard to believe that you are my mother's only living sibling. I still remember when Truett and I visited you in Texas with Mother and the time you were in Haxtun in the late '60's.

Thank you so much for all the information you sent. Dorothy said that she would contact you; I assume it is in response to that. And you sent the information so quickly - many thanks. I'm not sure I read the copy you sent correctly; therefore, I'm enclosing a typed version of my reading. Also added some information that we had.

Dorothy probably told you that we had a vamily reunion (Children of Bessie and Valton Cooper) in Amarillo last month. This is the fourth time we've had a reunion (not everyone has been able to make each one). Last year we met in Haxtun at Vanita's and Eldon's. Vanita had invited some cousins on Daddy's side that live in Amarillo, and they suggested we get together there this year so we could meet their families. In Amarillo we reviewed a family tree and tried to put down what we could remember. I've enclosed a copy of this based on the information you provided and recollections we had at the reunion. Your information was by far the most complete, as the rest of us weren't sure how names were spelled and did not know dates. The family tree is most complete for Mother's part as that's what we know the most about. I would really appreciate it if you could look it over and correct and/or add information in other parts. For example, the best we came up with for your daughters were their names (hopefully spelled right). As you can tell from the table we've enclosed, we are trying to find dates and location for my aunts, uncles, cousins, and their spouses and children. The table follows the form you sent; it seems like a good approach.

I think the family tree would be a nice thing to put together, perhaps more for the younger family members. As you mentioned in your letter, you wish that you had asked your father more about the Oxfords; I know as we get older several of us wich the same. Perhaps a descendant will benefit from what we write down if he or she becomes interested in finding out about the family. The plan is to put together the most complete information we can and give copies to whoever in the family wishes. If we wait to get all the possible information, we probably won't get it together and in people's hands in a timely manner. So the thought is to send out whatever information we have, and hope to get corrections and additions; then we can update the family tree from time to time. I plan to get it started and hopefully someone will carry it on. You have helped a lot so far; any additional information or contacts for information that you have would be appreciated. For example, you told me that your daughters are married and you have seven grandchildren and three great grandsons. In a lot of cases I don't know middle names; this would be useful. I've enclosed some bland forms that it would be great if you could fill in for your family; or anyone else that you remember. your family record got me to thinking about G. W. Oxford, Jr. All I ever remember is that he was called G. W. Up to now I didn't think about him being William George Washington Oxford Jr.; was he or is G. W. actually his total name?

I've enclosed all the information that I've got so far; I realize that a lot of it is probably new to you. As you can tell, I still haven't got all the information from my own brothers and sisters. I'm still working on that; but I thought that you might enjoy seeing it even if it's not complete.

My request is a big one I realize, but would you read it over and correct and add information as you can. And then send back the changes (not the whole thing) that you have.

A short note about myself. After graduating from Haxtun High, I went to California and lived with my brother Ray and his family. Mother and Truett came to California and we lived together until Truett joined the Navy. Then it was Mother and me until she became ill and went back to live in Haxtun. I worked at Sears part time and went to Mt. San Antonio Community College. Later I started working full time as a secretary at General Dynamics in Pomoni, California. It was there that I met my husband, Rudy; he worked there as an electronics engineer. We have been married 25 years now; this doesn't seem like much when I compare it with you and Rupert being married 62 years. WOW! After I married I went to Chaffey Community College and also California Polytechnic University. Erica, our daughter came along; she is now 21 and working as a pre-school teacher. When she was five I worked part-time as a secretary at Claremont Men's College for a year and then full time for a couple of years as secretary at our church's school when she started first grade there. After that I returned to Mt. San Antonio Community College and took more classes and worked part time as a computer lab and computer classroom aide. I now work part time as a secretary there. It turns out that being a secretary is what I loke doing the most even though I took courses in other fields over the years. Perhaps that is why I never finished college and obtained a degree; just certificates in office related options. We live in a small city (its now grown to about 50,000) east of Los Angeles. Rudy retired a couple of years ago after Hughes bought the plant from General Dynamics in 1992 and moved the work to Tucson, Arizona in 1994. We decided against the desert of Tucson. Our long range plan is to move to smaller town; we still haven't selected any place. That's all for us.

Thanks again for all your help with the Family Tree Project; and also for the picture. I'll share it with other family members. (Enclosed is a picture from our trip to Hawaii in June (our celebration of 25 years of marriage) - doubt we will live long enought to make 62). Say Hi to everyone for us and we look forward to hearing from you again.

(Signed: Love,

Rudy and Hassie)
