Caroline Jenkins (nee Rideout)

William JENKINS1 was born on 15 July 1839 in Burwood, NSW.2 William's father was William JENKINS (b. c.1808 Warwickshire, England) a convict arriving in Sydney in 1827 to serve 7 years for stealing money and harness. His mother was Eliza TULLY (b. 1819 Belfast, Ireland; , d. 9 Apr 1902 Camden NSW), a convict arriving in Sydney in December 1836. She and her sister Sarah both were to serve 7 years for stealing. Both sisters are said to be descendants of Rob Roy McGREGOR (the reputed Scottish Robin Hood). William married Eliza on 21 October 1838 in St James Church of England, Sydney NSW.3,4 On 7 August 1860 William resided in Spring Creek, NSW. Spring Creek is near Mount Hunter. This was his parents' farm and he was living there at the time of his marriage.5 He was described as partially blind . When he was a young man he had an accident while chopping wood and lost the use of his right eye.6 He married Caroline RIDEOUT on 7 August 1860 in Camden, NSW.7

William and Caroline had 14 children at Spring Creek :

- Louisa Jane JENKINS (b.1861). In 1889 she married Henry SMITH (b. c.1860). They had 4 children

- Unnamed Male JENKINS (b. 18 Jan 1862; d. 22 Jan 1862)

- William James JENKINS (b.1863; d. 1911). In 1884 he married Ada WHEELER (b. c.1863; d. 1956). They did not have any children

- John Bennett JENKINS (b.1865; d. 1912). In 1895 he married Rebecca Jane BRUCE (d. 1915). They had 4 children

- Caroline Eliza JENKINS (b. 31 Mar 1867; d. 20 Mar 1872)

- Minnie Emily JENKINS (b. 4 Apr 1869; d. 25 Mar 1872)

- Arthur Daniel JENKINS (b.1871; d. 1928). In 1879 he married Lucy ROFE (b. c.1869; d. 1955). They had 6 children

- Sylvester Reuben JENKINS (b.1872; d.1944). In 1896 he married Emily C RIDEOUT (b.1876; d.1942). They had 4 children

- Minnie Emily JENKINS (b.1876; d.1903). She married Frederick FUNNELL (b. c.1871). They had 4 children

- Thomas Edwin JENKINS (b.1878; d.1942). He married Elizabeth A BUTCHERS (b. c.1885). They had 3 children

- Charles Hercules JENKINS (b.1880; d.1950). He married Annie May THORN (b.1888; d.1909). They had 2 children

- Ada Maude JENKINS (b.1882; d.1968). In 1914 she married Arthur E LOVEDAY (d.1959). They had 6 children

- Leslie Rockland JENKINS (b.1884). He married Elizabeth L LOVEDAY. They had 6 children

- Ralph Rudolph JENKINS (b. 24 Feb 1886; d. 29 Sep 1886).8

from 1860 William and Caroline RIDEOUT lived in Spring Creek. After their marriage they lived there with William's parents. Eventually they inherited the farm from William's father who died in 1876. They continued to live on the farm until 1907 when they sold up and moved to Werombi NSW. They both died at Werombi. Caroline lived with her unmarried children, Ada and Leslie after William's death.6

he died (aged 68) on 20 June 1908 in Werombi, NSW.6 He was buried in June 1908 in St John's Churchyard in Camden.6

 

Caroline RIDEOUT1 was the daughter of James RIDEOUT (1801?-1878) and Caroline BENNETT (1801-1872).
