Janet Ellen GEGG (Snr), daughter of William Lee (Snr) GEGG (1818-1855) and Sarah KING (1821?-1889), was born on 30 September 1852 in London (Chelsea), Middlesex (pre-1888).1,2,3 In 1861 she resided at the Royal Caledonian Asylum for Orphans in London, Middlesex (pre-1888). The Royal Caledonian Asylum for Orphans was an institution for orphans of Scottish parentage or the children of poor Scots in London. She was resident there with her mother and brothers William Lee (Jnr), James Albert and George at the time of the English Census.1

she migrated from London to Port Phillip Bay Melbourne, Vic arriving on 13 October 1862. She came with her mother and siblings. They sailed from London on the "Donald McKay" and arrived on an unassisted passage paid for by his mother's friends James and Dinah Croker of Oallen near Windellama. They then travelled to Oallen. It is not known whether they travelled this last leg of the trip overland or by ship.4,5,6 She married George BOLAND on 3 November 1870 in Sod Hut (near Braidwood), NSW.7,8

At the time of their marriage on 3 November 1870 they lived in Sod Hut near Braidwood, NSW. He was a miner there. While George was droving, they lived at Durran Durra, NSW. At some unknown time, they moved to Braidwood where they owned The Willow Tree Inn at Braidwood. After retirement they lived at Croydon Park, NSW.9,10

she died (aged 73) on 18 September 1926 in Croydon Park, NSW. The cause was a gastric ulcer.11,12 She was buried on 20 September 1926 in St. Thomas Church of England Cemetery, Section 46, Plot 5 in Enfield, NSW.12,13

Reseacher Helen Sutton remembers her grandfather, Jim Bowland talking about his mother, Janet. "The main story he told of his mother, Janet is chiselled into my memory because it horrified me as a child. It was a graphic image of her 'cutting up and then boiling bears in a big drum in the yard to feed to the dogs'. Yes, they were koala bears! I did ask. There must be some basis of truth as he said the boiling was to get rid of the eucalyptus taste.".10
