William Lee Gegg (Jnr)

William Lee (Jnr) GEGG, son of William Lee (Snr) GEGG (1818-1855) and Sarah KING (1821?-1889), was born on 22 September 1847 in London (Chelsea), Middlesex (pre-1888).1,2,3,4 He was baptised on 7 July 1850 at the Parish of St Mary in Rotherhithe, Surrey (pre-1888).5,6 On 7 July 1850 he resided at 6 Swan Lane in Rotherhithe. He was living there with his parents at the time of his baptism.6 In 1861 he resided at Royal Caledonian Asylum for Orphans in London, Middlesex (pre-1888). The Royal Caledonian Asylum for Orphans was an institution for orphans of Scottish parentage or the children of poor Scots in London. He was resident there with his mother, brothers James Albert and George and sister Janet Ellen at the time of the English Census.7,8 In September 1862 (approx.) he received a testimonial from James Epps of Great Russell St in London It stated he had employed William for 'some time'. Presumably this was meant to indicate that he was a reliable worker.9

he migrated from London to Port Phillip Bay Melbourne, Vic arriving on 13 October 1862. He came with his mother and siblings. They sailed from London on the "Donald McKay" and arrived on an unassisted passage paid for by his mother's friends James and Dinah Croker of Oallen near Windellama.10,11,12 He was a gold fossicker . Where he did it is not known.13,14,15 He was diagnosed with the medical condition of a back injury. His injuries were caused by a falling log or tree.15

he died (aged 73) on 8 January 1921 at Rookwood Asylum* in Lidcombe, NSW. The cause was Acute Myocarditis, Senile Decay. The Medical Attendant last seen was R A Fox on 8 Jan 1921; the Informant was J Davies, Clerk Rookwood Asylum; Registered 15 Jan 1921 at Granville, NSW; the Undertaker was R Metcalfe; the Minister was David Allan; his Religion was Presbyterian and the Witness was W H Roberts.13 He was buried on 10 January 1921 in Grave 10902, Section 6D, Presbyterian section of Rookwood cemetery in Lidcombe.13

 

William did not marry. He was reputedly well loved by his nieces and nephews.15

 

* In 1913 Rookwood Asylum became known as The Rookwood State Hospital and Asylum for Aged and Infirm Men, Lidcombe. In 1927, it’s name was changed to Lidcombe State Hospital and Home.
