Mary Ann REEVES (1807?-1886)

Mary Ann Reeves

Mary Ann REEVES1 was born in 1807 (approx.) in Hastings England.1,2,3 Mary Ann's parents were John REEVES and Hannah ELSPICK (EPSUCK).1,4 Mary resided in Holy Trinity Hastings, Sussex.3,5 She married Robert SAXBY on 4 December 1827 in Hollington, Sussex. Their marriage was by Banns. Mary was a spinster and Robert was a bachelor.1,3

she migrated from Plymouth, Devonshire to Sydney, NSW arriving on 31 May 1841. She travelled to Australia on the "Moffatt" with her husband and five children, Harriett, Thomas, Elizabeth, Edward and Susannah during which the vessel is said to have "touched at no port". They departed from Plymouth on 12 February 1841. She was brought out to Australia by Nicholas James and Co., agriculturists of Sydney.1,3,6 In 1841 she was a follower of the protestant faith . The denomination is not known. At the time of her migration, she was described as unable to read or write.1 In June 1841 Mary was a servant .1,3

she died (aged 79) on 5 November 1886 at the Upper Hunter in Salisbury, NSW. The cause was old age.3,7 She was buried in November 1886 in the Upper Hunter in Salisbury. She was buried on their farm which eventually passed down to Fred Saxby who owned it until 2001 when he sold it.3,7

 

The Saxbys along with the Rumble family were reportedly the first two families in the Upper Hunter, Salisbury, NSW area.1
