William BUDDEN (1804-1877)

William BUDDEN1 [819] was born on 3 September 1804 in Tollard Royal, Wiltshire.2 He was baptised on 29 March 1806 in Tollard Royal.2 William's parents were Stephen BUDDEN (b. Dorset c.1782) and Sarah BENNETT (b. Tollard Royal Wiltshire c.1782), They were married 5 Oct 1803 Tollard Royal Wiltshire. Sarah's birth name is given as BENNETT but William's death certificate has an alteration that indicates her name may have been Sarah T FOLEY.

Apparently William was the eldest son. His siblings were John BUDDEN (b.1807), George BUDDEN (b.1809), Ishmael BUDDEN (b.1811), Mary Anne BUDDEN (b.1814), Joseph BUDDEN (b.1819) and Samuel BUDDEN (b.1822).2 William married Charlotte BENNETT [818] on 5 September 1825 in Tollard Royal. (probably).1,2

he migrated to Sydney, NSW arriving on 3 October 1838. He travelled to Australia with his wife and four children on the ship "John McLellan", a vessel of 588 tons. It left Portsmouth, Hampshire on 1 June 1838.3

William and Charlotte had 5 children born in England prior to their migration to Australia :

- Aaron BUDDEN (b. Date/Birth Order Unknown Tollard Royal Wiltshire; d. pre-1838 Tollard Royal Wiltshire)

- Elijah BUDDEN (b. 14 Apr 1828 Tollard Royal Wiltshire; d. 27 Mar 1873 Pure Point, Long Creek, Meroo NSW; bur. Windeyer NSW). On 18 Dec 1849 in Althorpe, Brougham, Invermain, Rowan NSW he married Harriett COLE (b. 9 May 1843). They had 10 children. Elijah was a harness maker and saddler and later an innkeeper.

- Emily BUDDEN (b. 7 Sep 1830 Tollard Royal Wiltshire; d. 10 May 1903 Maitland NSW; bur. Campbells Hill, Rutherford NSW). On 3 Apr 1848 in Muswellbrook she married John Matty MADDY (b. c.1822; d. 28 Oct 1858 of injuries sustained from falling from a horse at Patrick's Plain; bur. Muswellbrook NSW). He was the Licensee of the White Hart Inn, an auctioneer at Muswellbrook in addition to being a butcher, storekeeper and poundkeeper. Emily and John had 7 children. In 1860, Emily purchased the Licence of the White Hart Inn. In July 1865 she married Henry WINSOR. They had 3 children.

- Absolom BUDDEN (b. 4 Nov 1833 Tollard Royal Wiltshire; d. pre-1838 Tollard Royal Wiltshire).

- Keziah BUDDEN (b. 22 Mar 1836 or 22 Nov 1836 (Reports vary) Tollard Royal Wiltshire; d. 29 Dec 1907 Muswellbrook bur. Limestone, NSW). On 12 Apr 1855 she married William Albert ATKINS. They had 9 children.

Charlotte was pregnant while emigrating and she and William had another 4 children born in Australia.

- Stephen BUDDEN (b. 26 Apr 1839 "St Helliers" Muswellbrook NSW; d. 18 Dec 1919 Muswellbrook NSW). On 20 May 1862 he married Susannah GEORGE (b. c.1845 Bicket Lincolnshire) Muswellbrook NSW. They had 4 children.

- James BUDDEN (b. 6 Mar 1843 St Heliers Muswellbrook d. 15 May 1922 Limestone Creek, Liverpool, NSW). James never married.

- Caroline Charlotte BUDDEN (b. 24 Jun 1847 "St Helliers" Muswellbrook; d. 23 Jul 1905 Granville, NSW; bur. Rookwood Cemetery NSW). On 27 Feb 1865 in Muswellbrook she married Thomas WILDER (bap. 26 May 1844 Taplow Buckinghamshire). They had 6 children.

- Mary Dinah BUDDEN (b. 28 Apr 1854 Invermein via Scone d. Tingha, NSW bur. 9 Jul 1920 Tingha). On 1 Nov 1885 in Muswellbrook she married John LUTE (b. c.1848 Bath Somerset). They had 13 children.4,5

William died (aged 72) on 13 April 1877 at Muscle Creek in Muswellbrook, NSW. The informant was Emily WINSOR, daughter, Ford St, Muswellbrook. The length of his illness was 6 weeks. The minister was Wm. E. WHITE from the Church of England. The witnesses were Wm. GLENDINING and Henry WINSOR.2 He was buried on 15 April 1877 in Muswellbrook.2


Charlotte BENNETT1 [818] was the daughter of Jasper BENNETT (1774?-1835) [361] and Dinah PAINE (1774-1847) [362].

This site reports a child to William and Charlotte as follows "Arthur BUDDEN (b. 1840 Australia). In 1859 he married Sarah Hale STRANGER 1859 Methodist Church, Bathurst NSW." Sarah Hale STANGER actually married Arthur Blake BUDDEN (16 Mar 1832 - 17 May 1922) so part of the information is incorrect. Additionally there is no record of a birth of an Arthur BUDDEN to William and Charlotte between 1838 and 1855 in the NSW online BDM Index. It has been excluded
