Rebecca BURLEY (1843-1918)

Rebecca BURLEY,^1,2,3 daughter of Charles BURLEY (1806-1875) and Harriett WILLIAMS (1809-1859), was born on 22 April 1843 at the BDM District in Newcastle, NSW.^1,2,3,4 She married Edward SAXBY in 1863 at Underbank in the Dungog area in the Hunter River District in NSW.^3,5

Edward and Rebecca had 13 children :

- Robert SAXBY (b.1864 Dungog NSW; d.1941 Gloucester NSW))

- Amanda Mulvinia SAXBY. (b.1865 Dungog NSW; d. 21 Dec 1945 Wingham NSW). She married William BOORER and later on Tom SHELTON. One of William and Amanda's children was Edith who maried a man named WILSON

- Charles SAXBY (b.1867 Dungog NSW; d. 12 Sep 1905 Dungog NSW)

- Mulvinia Adelia SAXBY (b.1869)

- Bertha J SAXBY (b. 19 Nov 1870 NSW; d, 8 Jan 1939 Wondai Qld). She married Samuel Alfred FARLEY 1896 in Stroud NSW

- Adela Edith SAXBY (b.1872)

- Ada Adeline SAXBY (b 1874 Dungog NSW; d.1930 Wollongong NSW). She married Matthew PETTIGREW 1899 Wallsend NSW.

- Rose Lavinia SAXBY (b.1876 Port Stephens NSW District). She married James HALL Hamilton NSW 1901

- Rebecca Harriet SAXBY (b.1876; d.1903 Copeland NSW). She married Alfred SHELTON Copeland NSW 1901

- John SAXBY (b. 31 July 1880 Barrington NSW; d. 26 July 1942). He married Eliza May NEWTON (b. 21 May 1888; d. 15 October 1947) 18 April 1906.

- Beatrice Ann SAXBY (b.1882 Copeland NSW; d. 23 Dec 1897 Dungog NSW;

- Naomi Ruth SAXBY (b.1884 Copeland NSW; d. 18 Feb 1965 Belmont NSW; bur. Feb 1965 Belmont general cemetery). She married George HAM (d. 9 Oct 1959 Belmont NSW) Stroud NSW 1910

- Matilda Elizabeth SAXBY (b.1886 Dungog NSW; d.1978 Newcastle NSW). She married Edward MOORE Stroud NSW 1910.^3,6,7,8,9

Rebecca died (aged 75) on 18 October 1918 at the BDM District in Stroud, NSW.^3,10 She was buried in October 1918 in the general cemetery in Barrington, NSW.³

Edward SAXBY^3,11 was the son of Robert SAXBY (bef1807-1886) and Mary Ann REEVES (1807?-1886).

Edward and Rebecca are reported to have gone from Underbank, where they were married, to the Bowman River area in about 1880. Edward's brother John, with his wife Sarah, went with them. They earned their living as cedar cutters. Edward, accompanied by Ted Bartlett, is credited with discovering gold at Copeland.¹¹
