Robert ANDERSON (1832-1899)

Robert ANDERSON,1 son of Alexander ANDERSON (1797?-aft1854) and Mary CAMPBELL (1794?-aft1854), was born in 1832 in Glasgow, Lanark.2,3,4,5 His relationship to Ellen is Paternal Great ( x2 ) Grandfather. In 1841 Robert resided at 9 St Myrsen St in Paisley Low, Renfrewshire in Scotland. He was living with his parents.6 On 31 March 1851 he was a stonemason . He was recorded as an apprentice stonemason in the Scotland census of that year. Later records show him as a stonemason.1,2,7,8,9,10 In 1851 he resided at 5 New Sneddon in Paisley, Renfrewshire in Scotland. He was living with his parents.6,11

Robert married Agnes WRIGHT on 22 July 1852 at Middle Parish Church in Paisley.11,12

It is probable that before 1854 they lived in Paisley.13

he migrated from Liverpool (Merseyside), Lancashire to Sydney, NSW arriving on 10 July 1854. He travelled with his wife Agnes and first born son Alexander. They travelled on the "Sabrina" which departed 28 March 1854. He came as a bounty immigrant.4,14 In 1854 he was a follower of the Church of Scotland faith . After immigrating to Australia, he appears to have followed the Presbyterian religion.4 In 1854 he was described as able to read and write .15 In August 1871 he was a member of the Sons of Perseverance Lodge Friendly Society .16

in 1871 he and Agnes WRIGHT lived at Denison St (Kingston Parish) in Newtown, NSW. They were there at the time of Agnes' death.17 He married Agnes Dick ALEXANDER on 4 June 1877 at the Minister Henry Macready's home at Crown Rd in Ultimo, NSW.4,18,19,20

Between 1894 and 1899 his interests included politics especially associated with Local Government. He was elected to Erskineville Council as an Alderman, representing the Kingston Ward in the Borough of Camperdown, NSW. He held the position of Mayor for some years probably starting in 1895.22,23,24,25,26 On 27 December 1897 his interests included The Erskineville Benevolent Society of which he was President. "The Benevolent Society, founded by Edward Smith Hall in 1813, is Australia's first charity. It is an independent, non-religious, non-profit organization which aims to help people overcome barriers preventing them from participating fully in society" (Wilipedia).27,28 On 27 November 1898 Robert was a builder and contractor .29

he died (aged 67) on 22 May 1899 at 154 Australia St in Camperdown, NSW. The cause was Acute Bronchitis and Heart Failure. He was a man of robust health and his death from the heart attack was sudden. He was out and about on the Saturday showing no problem. He was seized by the attack on Sunday and was attended by his doctor but died on the Monday afternoon.

His religion was noted as Presbyterian and he was recorded as having been in NSW for 45 years. A death notice appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald of 23 May 1899 as follows :
