Ann RUSSELL (1819-1897)

Ann RUSSELL1 was born in 1819 in Galbally, Tipperary, Ireland.2,3 Ann's parents were Christopher RUSSELL (b. 1797 Ballywere, Tipperary) and Ann BLACKBURN (b. 1799 Ballywere, Tipperary; d. 10 May 1853).4,5,6,7

Ann migrated from Cork, County Cork to Sydney, NSW arriving on 16 March 1839. Ann travelled to Australia with her parents and siblings on the "Aliquis" which departed on 9 December 1838. On 15 May 1839, the "Aliquis" (P. Gill) was on voyage from Sydney to Calcutta when she was lost off Mt. Adolphus Island, Torres Strait.8,9,10

Ann married Garrett COTTER in 1841 at "Rosebank" in Maneroo, NSW.11,12

in 1841 they lived at the mountainous regions of the Namadgi National Park . They became pioneers of the area. The Cotter River and Cotter Valley were named after them and the river's name was first officially used in 1839. After Garrett received his Conditional Pardon in 1847, they moved to near Michelago where they built the family home which is still occupied by the Cotter family. This solid durable structure with thick walls is a tribute to Garrett's skill as a carpenter and stonemason.13,14,15

she died (aged 78) on 19 April 1897 at the BDM District in Cooma, NSW. (probably near Michelago).2,5 She was buried in the Catholic section of the general cemetery in Michelago, NSW.2
