Thomas OWEN (1839-1914)

Thomas OWEN,1,2 son of David OWEN (1801?- ) and Ann DAVIES (1806?-1861), was born on 13 June 1839 at 6.00am in Morriston, Glamorgan in Wales.3,4 He was baptised at St Teilo-on-the-Clase in Llangyfelach, Glammorgan in Wales.1 His relationship to John is Paternal Great (x1) Grandfather.

On 16 October 1859 Thomas resided in Cwmavon, Neath District in Glamorgan in Wales. This was his stated address when he married his first wife Margaret Jones.1,5 He married Margaret JONES on 16 October 1859 in Swansea, Glamorganshire. The witnesses were Trevor Williams and Mary Thomas.6

on 9 August 1860 they lived at Cornish Row in Michaelson Lower, Neath District in Glamorgan County in Wales. This was when their daughter Ann was born but by 1861 they had moved to 6 David's Row, Michaelson Lower.1,7,8

he migrated from Plymouth, Devonshire to Adelaide, South Australia arriving on 4 December 1864. He travelled to Australia with his wife Margaret and family aboard the ship "Tarquin" which left Plymouth on 17 August 1864.9,10 In 1864 he was a smelter/miner/coperman . He was brought to Australia by an Association of Copper Smelters (the organisation's actual name is not known) in Swansea, Wales. There was a team of about 20 - 30 smelters brought out to operate a new mine in Burra Burra (now Burra) S.A.1,5,11

from 1865 he and Margaret JONES lived in Burra Burra, South Australia. They were initially there after emigrating to Australia but while Thomas had been brought out to work at the Burra Burra mine, they must have moved to Wallaroo which also had a mine.1,12

On 13 January 1867 Thomas resided in Wallaroo, South Australia. Their son John was born on this day. Margaret died the same day, at their residence, presumably during or just after childbirth.1,13 On 8 July 1871 he resided at the copper mines in Currawang, NSW. This was his stated residence at the time of his marriage to his second wife Sarah.11 He married Sarah BUCKLEY on 8 July 1871 in Goulburn, NSW. They were married at the Manse according to the rites of the Presbyterian Church by Simon Fraser Mackenzie before the witnesses G. L. Maclennan and E. Peckham.14

Thomas was placed into bankruptcy in January 1899 in Mt Hope, NSW. The Bankruptcy Records state "he was a miner and smelter at Mt Hope (South of Cobar). This was his first bankruptcy and he did not keep any books (i.e. Bookkeeping books). He worked his business at South Mt Hope for last two years. Has been residing in these places. He had been in the district over 2 years. When he came to the area he had about £3 or £4 capital but at present had no money in hand. He owed a small amount on the premises he occupied. "I was married, my wife is dead. I have one child under age." He signed his name with a mark. He owed £78.19.6 to woodcarters, publicans, butcher and shopkeepers and was owed £15 in wages by the Mount Hope Copper Mine. "My Bankruptcy was caused through working for 7 Months on Tribute (is this the name of a mine?) at South Mount Hope Copper Mine at a loss and could never recover myself". The Sequestration Order was made against him on 5 December 1898.15,16

Before 1914 Thomas resided at The Mount in Cobar, NSW. On 8 Oct 1914, this address was given by his son George when he enlisted for World War I but he had died by then. Presumably George didn't know his father had died when he was enlisting.17

he and Sarah BUCKLEY lived at the Phoenix mine at Currawang in Goulburn. This was when their son Thomas was born. Then they were at Orange, NSW on 15 September 1874 at the birth of their son William. It would appear that they then moved to Cowra as on 17 March 1877 their son George was born at the Corri Reserve and then on 1 April 1879 their next son, John was born in Kendall St. Finally they moved to Nymagee where Edward was born on 21 November 1884.18,19,20

he died (aged 75) between 8 September 1914 and 9 September 1914 in Illewong, NSW. The cause was natural causes - Senile Decay (The finding came from an inquiry held at Cobar on 11 September, 1914 by N. Morrison J.P.).1,21 He was buried on 9 September 1914 in the cemetery in Illewong.22
