Maria TICKNER (1829-1904)

Maria TICKNER,1 daughter of Edward TICKNER (1789-1864) and Sarah TOWNER (1784-1860), was born on 9 February 1829 in Rye, Sussex.2 She was baptised on 25 August 1829 in East Guldeford, Sussex.2

she migrated from Gravesend, Kent to Camden, NSW arriving in September 1838 (approx.). She travelled to Australia with her parents on the "Florist". The ship left on 14 Jun 1838.3,4 She married George LARKIN on 4 July 1849 at St. John's Anglican Church in Camden. George and Maria were married by Banns. The marriage was witnessed by Elizabeth Kingsford of Menangle and Maria's brother, John Tickner of Razorback. Their marriage is reputed to be the first conducted at St. John's.1,2,5

George and Maria had 9 children :

- Mary Ann LARKIN (b. 9 Feb 1851 Picton NSW; d. 31 Dec 1906 Manly NSW). She married James BUTTENSHAW (b. 27 Jul 1850 d. 30 July 1941) at the Congregational Church, Campbelltown on 18 Jun 1874 in a joint wedding with Sarah

- Sarah LARKIN (b. 26 Dec 1852 Picton NSW; d. 13 Oct 1936 Grenfell NSW). She married Thomas BUTTENSHAW (b. 25 Jul 1852) at the Congregational Church, Campbelltown on 18 Jun 1874 in a joint wedding with Mary Ann

- George Edmund or Edward LARKIN (b. 7 Nov 1854 Picton NSW; d. 7 Nov 1854 Picton NSW)

- Walter Edward LARKIN (b. 19 Jan 1856 Picton NSW; d. 12 Jun 1916 Bulli NSW). He married Elizabeth Ann STANBRIDGE (b. 6 Apr 1857 d. 11 Aug 1942) at St Barnabas Church, Ultimo NSW on 19 Apr 1879

- John Henry [Jack] LARKIN ( b. 3 Feb 1858 Picton NSW; d. 16 Oct 1937 Grenfell NSW)

- Frederick William LARKIN (b. 30 Jan 1862 Camden nSW; d. 24 Dec 1903 Picton NSW). He married Lilla SMITH (b. c.1860 d. 21 Nov 1923) in 1886

- Eliza Swan LARKIN (b. 16 Oct 1864 Picton NSW; d. 19 Aug 1943 Picton NSW). She married Joseph Henry HANGER (b. 12 Dec 1861 d. 21 Mar 1924) at St Barnabas Church, Ultimo NSW on 1 Dec 1887

- Alfred Hill LARKIN (b. 4 Dec 1866 Picton NSW; d. 16 Apr 1936 Parramatta NSW). He married Alice Elizabeth FLINT (b. 18 Apr 1871 Bong Bong NSW; d. 19 Oct 1944) on 29 Sep 1895

- Elizabeth Tickner LARKIN (b. 19 Mar 1869 Picton NSW; d. 19 Jul 1940 Marrickville NSW). Elizabeth never married.1,6,7

Maria died (aged 74) on 4 January 1904 at "Badgally" in Campbelltown, NSW.2,4,5 She was buried in St. Peter's Churchyard in Campbelltown.2
