James Thomas COLLINS (1847-1928)

picture

This is believed to be Selina Arnold (1921) but it's not verified

James Thomas COLLINS,1 son of James COLLINS ( - ) and Johanna DARCY ( - ), was born on 7 May 1847 at an unknown suburb in Sydney, NSW.2,3 He was baptised on 29 May 1847 in an unidentified place or church.4,5 His relationship to John is Maternal Great (x1) Grandfather.

In 1872 James was a shepherd . He was probably one of the two people named James Collins known to be in the area.6

James resided in Cooma, NSW. In 1872 a James Collins is recorded as living at Bredbo near Cooma and another at Rosebrook near Cooma. One of them was probably him.7 On 3 January 1874 he resided at "Haydon Springs" in Bombala, NSW. He was residing there when he got married.8 From January 1874 to 4 February 1877 he was a labourer/selector settler .9,10,11 He married Selina ARNOLD on 3 January 1874 at St Andrew's in Nimmitabel, NSW. The person consenting for the underage marriage was John Joseph Arnold, father of the bride, the said Seleine being under the age of 21 years; the Celebrant was John Joseph Carroll; the Rites of Celebration were R. Catholic; the witnesses were John Collins and Susan Beiliter.12

James and Selina are known to have lived at Delegate, NSW. on 4 February 1887 they lived at Wollondilly, near Bombala NSW . This was when their son Henry was born. On 1 July 1915 when their son Andrew was enlisting for World War I, Selina's and presumably James' address is recorded as 16 Liverpool St, Paddington, NSW.13,14,15 On 12 July 1913 he was a labourer . He stated this as his occupation at his son Henry's marriage.16 He was a postal contractor in Delegate, NSW.17 On 5 November 1928 he was a labourer and old age pensioner . He was recorded as an old age pensioner at the time of his death.18

he died (aged 81) on 9 November 1928 at 42 Louis St in Redfern, NSW. The cause was Double Pneumonia (3 Days).19,20 He was buried on 10 November 1928 in an unmarked grave in the Catholic section of Rookwood cemetery in Lidcombe, NSW.18,21

James appears to have been a colourful character. In records associated with him there is very little information supplied, as if he was reluctant to supply such information. Dorothy Collins (his granddaughter) claims he used to light his pipe at the fireplace at "Pineleigh" in Goulburn (where his son Henry and daughter-in-law Florist were living) with £1 notes. It is not known whether this was a single incident or a regular occurrence.

Leslie Collins (his grandson) tells how Les' father (Henry Collins) always said that James had changed his name. There is a family story that he was actually a member of the Macarthur-Onslow family but because he was a bit of a black sheep he changed his name to Collins to avoid embarressment for the family. The story is clearly not true. Captain Arthur Onslow R.N. married Elizabeth Macarthur (Granddaughter of John and Elizabeth Macarthur of Australian sheep fame) in 1866. After she became a widow in 1892, she changed her name to Macarthur-Onslow under Royal Charter from Queen Victoria, i.e. the name didn't exist before 1892. (Information gained from the book "Elizabeth Macarthur and her World" by Hazel King). James Collins was married under the name James Collins in 1874 almost twenty years before the Macarthur-Onslow name came into existence. However his wife Selina's father did change his name, anglicising it from Johann Josef to John Joseph Arnold.22

Selina ARNOLD1 was the daughter of Johann Josef ARNOLD (Jnr) (1826-1893) and Eva Sussanah SCHUPPEL (1831-1918). She and James Thomas COLLINS had the following children:
