William DOWLE (1812-1873)

William DOWLE1 was born on 24 September 1812 in Lydd, Kent.1 William's parents were Abraham DOWLE and Mary BEINEY.2 William was a follower of the Church of England faith .2 He was a shepherd .2 He married Mary TOWNER (FORD) on 20 August 1832 in Lydd.1

he migrated from England to Sydney, NSW arriving in 1854. He travelled with his wife Mary and eight children aboard the "Sabrina" arriving on 10 July 1854. William Dowle paid £2 for the journey and Mary's brother, John Tickner, under the Immigrants Regulations, paid the remaining cost of £30. According to the shipping documents, his health was good and he could read and write. He had no relatives in the colony.2,3

in 1854 he and Mary TOWNER (FORD) lived at "Camberfield" . The family stayed there until William could seek employment and a place to live.2 In June 1861 he leased a property of forty-seven acres from James and William Macarthur which he called "Rosefield". It boarded on the southern boundary of "Camberfield". William and Mary’s son, James John, also leased forty-seven acres below his father and another son, William Beiney, leased a larger block next to his father and brother. The Dowle families were involved in farming wheat, oats and barley and were quite successful.2

William and Mary had 8 children :

- James John DOWLE (b. c.1833 Lydd, Kent, d. 8 Nov 1920). In 1857 he married Mary Ann GENTLE (b. c.1839 d. 10 Dec 1922)

- William Beiney DOWLE (b. 15 Aug 1834 Lydd, Kent, d. 9 Jul 1908). On 28 Sep 1861 he married Eliza BARDEN (b. c.1841 d. 1887) by Special Licence at Holy Trinity Church Sydney. Service was by Rev E Rogers

- Mary Jane DOWLE (b. c.1838 Lydd, Kent, d. 16 May 1869). In 1857 she married Thomas William NEW (b. 20 Feb 1838 d. 20 Nov 1899)

- Sarah Ann DOWLE (b. c.1841 Lydd, Kent, d. 22 Nov 1937). In 1868 she married John CHAPMAN (b. c.1840 d. 22 Jun 1920)

- Edward Tickner DOWLE (b. c.1845 Lydd, Kent,). In 1866 he married Sarah Ann P E EARLl (b. c.1847)

- Maria DOWLE (b. 31 Dec 1846 Lydd, Kent, d. 22 Feb 1928 in 3 Young St Croydon, NSW). On 1 Oct 1868 at the Primative Methodist Church, Camden, she married Henry SPICE (b. 28 Nov 1845 d. 2 Apr 1910)

- Susannah DOWLE (b. c.1849 Lydd, Kent, d. 12 Jan 1936. In 1880 she married John JENKINS (b. 28 Dec 1843 d. 24 Nov 1913)

- Abraham DOWLE (b. c.1852 Lydd, Kent, d. 8 Sep 1905). In 1880 he married Sarah Jane RITCHIE (b. c.1859 d. 7 Oct 1919).4,5,6

William died (aged 60) on 3 February 1873 at the BDM District in Camden, NSW.7,8,9

 

According to family stories an argument began aboard the ship "Sabrina" when they were coming to Australia and various members changed the spelling of their name. Today, throughout the family the spellings are DOWLE, DOWEL and DOWELL.2

 

Mary TOWNER (FORD)1 was the daughter of Daniel FORD ( - ) and Sarah TOWNER (1784-1860).
