John RIDEOUT (1838-1904)

John RIDEOUT, son of James RIDEOUT (1801?-1878) and Caroline BENNETT (1801-1872), was born on 25 July 1838 at sea . He was born on board the "John McClelland" which departed Plymouth, Devonshire on 2 June 1838 and arrived at Botany Bay on 3 October 1838.1,2,3,4,5 He was baptised on 25 November 1838 in Camden, NSW.2 He was a farmer .6 He was described as a "cripple" . Family lore has it that he was disabled from birth, always used a wheelchair and lived with his brother James. It is hard to see how he could have been a farmer if he had to use a wheelchair, unless he could employ someone and that seems unlikely.6 From 1869 to November 1878 he resided in Mulgoa Forest, NSW. He was probably living with his parents at this time and stayed there until his father died in 1878.2 From 1878 to 1893 he resided in Pumpkin Hills, NSW. He farmed there with his brother James.2 From 1893 to 1904 he resided at "Williamswood" in The Oaks, NSW. He farmed here until he died.2

he died (aged 66) in 1904 in Picton, NSW.4

John never married. At some time in his life he became disabled and was confined to a wheelchair. Family lore has it that he was this way from birth but he was described as a farmer a number of times during his life. How could he farm if he was confined to a wheelchair? Maybe he was able to pay for workers.2
