Lola Workman, aged four, was present when their house was burnt down and in an interview said "Friday 13, January 1939 was the day more than 1000 homes were lost and seventy people (Sydney Moring Herald) lost their lives in the Victorian bushfires. The SMH screamed 'Black Friday' and the temperatures were recorded at record heats of 116 degrees Fahrenheit. (46.66 degrees Celsius) ......... After a short time in Dapto, George, Joe Arnold and some of the neighbours built a temporary residence again at Pericoe. George never recovered from the loss of his home and life in Pericoe and died a short time later.10
