Mary ARNOLD (1858?-1941)

Mary Arnold

Mary ARNOLD1 [346], daughter of Johann Josef ARNOLD (Jnr) (1826-1893) [146] and Eva Sussanah SCHUPPEL (1831-1918) [194], was born in 1858 (approx.) at "Woolway" in Wambrook, NSW.1,2 She was a cook (probably) in Mount Cooper near Nimmitybelle, NSW.3 She was a hotel worker at the Royal Hotel in Pambula, NSW. She worked there with her brother George.3 She married Joseph Thomas CARVETH [353] in 1880 at Mary's parents' house in Bombala, NSW. Mary left Joseph c.1896 and took her children to the country where she worked as a cook.1,2,4

Joseph and Mary had 2 children :

- William Walter CARVETH (b.1879 Nimmitybelle). He changed his name to CAVELL when he was about 16 years old. He became a soldier and went to the Boer War as a bugler. He married and had two children. He joined up for WWI and died from his wounds at sea during this conflict.

- Martha Ann Marie CARVETH (b. 1882 Bega NSW; d.1934 Newtown NSW). She married William H HALL in 1903 at Sydney NSW.3,4,5

Mary died (aged 83) in 1941 at the home of her granddaughter, Alma Phillpott in Petersham, NSW.1,2 She was buried in 1941 in the Church of England section of the general cemetery in Woronora, NSW.6

I am Patricia hurry [ne Phillpott] I was reading your Arnold family history and some of the bit about my G-Grandmother is incorrect. and the missing bit I can fill in .she married John Thomas Carveth ,at her fathers house in Bombala. they had two children a son William Walter Carveth and Martha Ann my great grandmother.she left her husband when Martha [my grandmother]was about 14years old and took the children to the country where she worked as a cook. William Walter about 16 yrs. old changed his name to Cavell and joined the army went to the boar war as a bulger, married had two children ,Joined up in the first world war and died from wounds at sea.
