Bridget LENEHAN (1788-1873)

Bridget LENEHAN,1,2 daughter of William LENEHAN ( - ), was born in 1788 in Clare, Ireland. Shipping records indicate her native place as Lisdrumlandna, Clare.3,4 Her relationship to Ellen is Maternal Great (x2) Grandmother. Bridget was a follower of the Catholic faith .3 She married Bartholomew MCNAMARA in 1830 in Clare.5,6

she migrated from Clare to Sydney, NSW arriving on 14 August 1851. She travelled to Australia on the ship "Sarah" which departed c. May 1851. She and Bartholomew came with their children (Michael 19, Mary 18, Patrick who died at sea four days before their arrival, Nancy 16, John 14 and Kate 12) and settled in the Queanbeyan district. [It is believed their daughters Bridget and Anne were already in Australia].7 She was unable to read or write.3

Bridget died (aged 85) on 2 May 1873 in Queanbeyan, NSW. The headstone on the grave at Riverside cemetery at Queanbeyan, NSW says that Bridget was Bartholomew's daughter. However this is impossible as it would have had him fathering her before he was born. It has been accepted that there is an error on the headstone and that daughter should probably read wife. Even still there is some cause for doubt as this would have her having her last child at 54. This of course is possible if not common. It should be remembered that Bartholomew's mother's name was also Bridget and nothing has as yet been traced on her birth/death.8 She was buried in May 1873 (estimated) in the Riverside Cemetery, Erin St in Queanbeyan.8

Bartholomew MCNAMARA was the son of Michael MCNAMARA ( - ) and Bridget MCNAMARA** ( - ). He and Bridget LENEHAN had the following children:

Mary MCNAMARA (1829?-1913)

Michael MCNAMARA (1831?-1919)

Patrick MCNAMARA (1832?-1851)

Bridget MCNAMARA (1834?-1907)

Anne MCNAMARA (1835-1884)

Nancy MCNAMARA (1835- ) (known as 'Nance')

John MCNAMARA (1838?-1886)

Catherine MCNAMARA (1844-1936) (known as 'Kate')

Gives birth as 1814 but this would have her only 8 years old when first child born. Not accepted.
