Edward Tickner (b.1867)

Rebecca WASHER1 (known as 'Beckie') was born on 28 December 1892 at "Migurra", her parents' property in Cungegong, NSW.2,3 Rebecca was the sixth child of William James WASHER and Sarah Jane McFARLAND.4,5 Beckie was a midwife .6 She married Edward TICKNER on 30 August 1911 in Frampton, NSW.1,5

They lived in a number of places over the years. Edward met Rebecca at Cootamundra. He was then aged forty-four and she was nineteen. on 30 August 1911 they lived in Cootamundra, NSW. for about six years and three of their five children were born there. They then moved to Como for awhile where another child was born before they moved to Bowral for a year or so around 1919. It was at this time that Edward worked for Jonathon Willis. After work finished at Bowral, the family moved to Penshurst for a short time before settling at a new location in Como where they built a house. Their fifth and last child was born there.5,7 From 1926 to 1934 she resided in Como, NSW. After Edward's death, Rebecca continued to live in the family home at Como. She continued living there for about a year after her second marriage.2

Edward and Rebecca had 5 children :

- Esmerelda Virrell TICKNER (known as Topsy) [b. 6 Sep 1912; d. 26 Dec 1912 in aged care Merrylands, NSW]

- Noella Elizabeth TICKNER (known as Nolie) [b. 25 Dec 1913 Cootamundra ; d. 14 Nov 1911 Hornsby NSW]

- William Edward TICKNER (known as Bill/Billy) [26 Oct 1916 Cootamundra NSW; d. 10 May 1992 Rooty Hill NSW]

- Emily Sarah TICKNER (known as Sally/Sarah) [20 Nov 1918 Cootamundra NSW; d. 13 May 2006 Burpengarry Qld]

- Betty TICKNER [ Living].8,9,10

Beckie married Robert William MCFARLAND on 5 January 1933 in Sutherland, NSW. Robert was her cousin.11,12,13

between 1934 and 1935 they lived in Como. The house was Rebecca's and then in about 1942 they moved to Kallangur Qld.2 After 1943 she resided in Kallangur, Qld. After Robert's death, she lived for awhile with her daughter Sally HERCHELL before returning to Sydney where she bought a house near her son Neville who lived at McQuarie Fields. Later on she moved in with Neville.2

Robert and Rebecca had one child, Neville MCFARLAND (b.1936).2

Beckie died (aged 83) on 12 September 1976 in Fairfield, NSW.2 She was cremated on 14 September 1976 at Rookwood crematorium in Lidcombe, NSW.2,14

 

Rebecca wanted to marry Robert McFarland, her cousin, in the beginning but her father, William James Washer, wouldn't allow it and she married Edward Tickner, who was more suitable according to her father. Edward was 44 and Rebecca only 19. They settled in Sutton Street Cootamundra, where today the "Bradman Motor Inn Motel" now stands.15

 

Edward TICKNER16 (known as 'Ted') was the son of Henry TICKNER (bef1821-1895) and Martha RIDEOUT (1828-1875).
